Is there any penalty to not doing storyline missions? My Amarr standings keep dropping and I just want the ISK from the ordinary missions. It's getting annoying since I frequently venture into Amarr territory.
As far as I'm hoping, I can just let them expire without accepting them and nothing will happend (no corp and faction standings loss)?

Never let a mission offer expire. THAT will definitely have a negative influence on your standing - agents don't like it when you simply ignore them.
It's safe to refuse the offer, even if it's a storyline mission. If you refuse an offer, you'll have to wait at least 4 hours until you can refuse another one from the same agent, otherwise you'll incur penalties.

Ok. that's good to know. Since I doubt I'll get another storyline within 4 hours it would be safe to just decline the missions..

I've been refusing Caldari storyline missions for the past six months, while I alternate between Caldari and Gallente agents to raise my standing toward the Gallente Empire ... no penalty if you go to the agent to tell him that you don't want his mission, but if you let the mission offer expire, I think you'll take a standing hit (never tried that myself tough).

It's safe to let storyline mission offers expire. I used to do that all the time because I wasn't going to fly over to that agent just to reject the combat missions that he couldn't do.

I let an important mission expire 2 days ago on my research alt and nothing happened to my standings.
