I've found that playing EVE in windowed mode for any amount of time results in my eyes getting stressed and bloodshot. As far as I can tell, this is due to constantly having to focus in on the tiny text, and tiny UI in general. For reference, I typically play in 1152x864 windowed mode, on a 1280x1024 desktop.
Setting context menus to 12 pixels and expanding font width helps somewhat, but isn't really enough. The only way I've found so far to forcibly resize the entire text and UI is to set EVE to full screen with a low resolution such as 1024x768. Is there another way to accomplish this, ideally without resorting to full screen mode?

I had the same problem.... running Eve in any window mode stuffs your eyes. Just don't do it.

Me too. Actually had to stop playing for a week or so in summer after a week or two of solid 12 hour sessions.

that's the good thing about windowed mode.. if you don't have anything important to do, you can quickly switch apps to do something else.. watch ****, read the forums... checking my mail etc...
on a side note, I keep most of my fonts at standard settings, though i change the chatwindow font to the max size through them little button thingies... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Xaroth Brook [Datacore - Quantum Physics] x 40

I wonder if the problem isn't your refresh rate. Although, if you're using an LCD monitor, it won't make much of a difference.

For reference, the monitor is a 19" CRT with a desktop resolution of 1280x1024 and the refresh rate is 60 Hz.
I'm pretty sure it's EVE, though, as taking a weekend off from playing EVE and playing other games on the same machine/monitor resulted in my eyes going from red-veined wrecks to mildly bloodshot. Playing a few hours on monday and tuesday put 'em back where they were before the break.

60Hz will just kill me... I can understand it hurts when playing and reading small text on a low screen frequency. I never use anything under 72Hz, and it's much more comfortable in around 85Hz. You won't really see a difference, you will feel it, your eyes won't hurt after. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast ! Hmm.. this could actually help, then. My monitor is rated up to 85Hz at 1280x1024, and works when I set it to that. However, there seem to be some visual artifacts when I do that.. anything about 60 Hz and there's a horizontal.. "liney-ness".. about the display. Almost like it's interlaced, except not. I've noticed this on other monitors as well.
For reference, the monitor in question is a fairly cheap brand, an Envision EN-985e.

I recently retired an EN-985e. If you're using 60hz....then my sympathies to your eyeballs. That monitor is SUPPOSED to be used with 85hz. Anything less and you are doing the equivalent of staring at a badly flickering fluorescent light. The artifacts you are seeing is possibly moiring problems or just that the thing is dying. The retired envision I refer to began having focusing issues after about 2-3 years of pretty solid use, and got replaced by a 24" widescreen acer lcd. With the 17-19 inch lcd's costing LESS than 250$ these days, I'd recommend just getting one of those and be done with the CRT. Your eyes will thank you.

The problem you've got with the teeny tiny text is NOT directly related to running in windowed mode.
That's important, so I'll say it again: The tiny text problem is not directly related to running in windowed mode.
The issue you are having is directly related to selecting the wrong resolution to run in windowed mode. If you select a resolution that is smaller than your regular resolution, the screen text will be compressed and difficult to read.
I also have an LCD monitor with a 1280 x 1024 native resolution. Remember that the resolution is listed Width first, Height second. so it's 1280 pixels wide by 1024 pixels high. I have found that the best resolution for windowed mode on a screen such as this is 1280 x 960. This gives you a wide screen appearance without sacrificing too much screen area. Because the screen width is the same the text will not be sized down and you will have to strain less to read it.
One other thing to consider is that you may be having other issues with your eyesight if you are having a particularly difficult time reading the UI text in EVE. If it bothers you that much, I would strongly recommend a visit to your local Optician for an eye exam just in case.

There is your problem. Refresh rates below 85Hz or even perhaps 100Hz on that resolution are really really not good. :)
If you set resolution to 85Hz and you got weird artifacts on your screen, then check if you maybe set your resolution to interlaced. If that can still be set... :)
