Originally by: Captain Thunk I joined Privateers because Freighters can log off legitimately to save themselves. This isn't an exploit or worthy of attention apparently.
On joining Privateers I discovered something quite fantastic. Small gang warfare of a kind you don't get anywhere else in the game of any notable quantity. Never before had I been able to regularly find gangs willing to fight on roughly even terms, largely because the option is effectively removed from alliances when in Empire and away from their main base.
We're told that "real pvp" is 0.0, it isn't. Going 30+ jumps to areas where you can't dock and your enemy can, where you have no supplies but your enemies is limitless isn't "real pvp" - it's a situation so stacked in one sides favour they might....just might be willing to undock with 70+ of their mates and "fight" you. Essentially roaming gangs operating in 0.0 have the joy of shooting inadequately defended NPCers and miners until a blob is produced to force the invaders away - Ironically as a Privateer, that isn't the kind of thing I enjoy - not to mention bringing the loot back 30+ jumps, no doubt through a hostile gatecamp at the 0.0 entrance, makes the risks far outweigh the rewards.
Then there's the political side of Eve's 0.0 - it's a cesspit of childishness, the squabbles rage on as if situated in a schoolyard, there's nothing enticing about it to the more mature player. Take a look at the CAOD section, people may pride themselves on their ability to be unvbelievably obstinate, but this really only appeals to the younger generation who are able to delude themselves that forum putdowns are an avenue to attain achievement. It's fine for the Emo generation or students who are killing time inbetween lectures, but like all schoolyards it really should be fenced off from the rest of the community.
A few weeks ago while in lo-sec (contrary to popular opinion some privateers can or do go there) our little gang was jumped by a small blob of hardcore pirates, naturally we made our escape as we were hopelessly outnumbered, but as we ran one of them said "That's how real pvpers do it" - how we laughed on vent at this young childs exuberence, I won't name him as I'm sure he's new and was just getting high on the feeling of power that comes with marching around in a gang of 30+, but now I'm faced with the dawning realisation that he's right - that is how 'real pvpers' are doing it and CCP is excluding all other options. What Privateers brought was taking the fight to alliances on equal terms - we have the same options of docking and hiding as our enemies - we have the same access to supplies and resources. But people don't want this, people don't want a good fight, they want to "win" at all costs to decent play, the want to obliterate that caracal that dared to wander into their space with 30 battleships, 16 T2 frigates and a mothership thrown in for good measure.
I've had some good small scale fights with many of the alliances that participated, albeit unwillingly, in the Privateers wars - fun was had on both sides. It's just a shame that more thought wasn't put into this patch, I don't think it's reasonable to expect alliances at least to be subject to such wars, they are sovereign entities supposedly with their own Navy. I would have welcomed a nerf to protect corps incapable of defending themselves, but this is designed to protect the majority who were victim of a privateer war - the very ones who are supposedly capable of protecting themselves.
With the deletion of the middle ground, it looks like the future of Eve is very bleak to me.
Beautifully put.
