You guys had it coming, and you know it 
The thing is, I've never thought Privateers were bad people or anything ridiculous like that for doing what they do. On the contrary, I've always been dead impressed by what you guys thought up- it was genius onna stick. But I honestly don't think CCP intended you to be able to do what you were doing; it was inevitable they were going to fix it eventually.
So be happy that you enjoyed yourselves for a few months, and probably given EVE's history another name that'll be remembered. Just don't turn yourselves into whiners about losing your toy

WoW, you really dont know much about people in eve do you..
Most of the privateers came from 0.0, because fleet warfare is the worst thing in this game. Most of privateers are long served and very experienced pilots. Those from omniscient order, X13, Beyond Divinity and countless others...
All have had action in 0.0
And to be quite honest, there is no balls in 150 vs 150 man blobs...
People who think PvP is limited to fleet-blobs and gate camps clearly has never PvP'd. Learn the art of the roaming gang territory raid, thats PvP at its best. Blobs are just for special occasions, and ganking is just to fill your wallet. The real PvP is neither.

I could understand a slight nerf given the amount of whine threads (something was bound to happen), but this is just overkill.
Nothings stopping you guys doing Empire wars, its just you can't dec everybody anymore.
If you look at your dec list, theres probably a fair few corps that are only a few members big, so they can obviously be cut without too much bother. Make sure all th big alliances are dec'd (they'll flesh out the numbers), and then carry on with a modified version of your mercenary scheme (just make people who want you to dec someone pay the new modified cost, and you manage to completely avoid the price change) Make sure you only accept contracts on people large enough numbers-wise to be worth your time.
It'll certainly be a life-style change, but I doubt your niche is completely gone. Adapt, as you guys are so fond of saying
