OK first off this aint a whine. I'm just curious as to what the community feels about Smartbombs in general. After seeing Mr. Abbandon's Kill Bobby vid I was thinking "Heh heh that's kinda funny" and then I was thinking "Damn....That's scary!" Certainly it seems that for example if you put a Smartbomber at ever low sec gate you could cut off traffic for entire systems as long as you wanted. I dunno, are they the p0wnmobile they seems to be?

I don't think they should be able to be activated withing striking range of a gate. Presumably the gate owners/operators would take exception to this not to mention from a gameplay standpoint it kinda sucks.
This is especially true when they are fitted to cap ships. Part of a cap ship's downside is supposed to be its long targetting time. Smartbombs get around that neatly. Park a smartbombing Mothership at a gate and you're all set (as has been done).
At the least they should make smartbombs not be able to be fitted on a cap ship...or rather make a capital class smartbomb that whollops their cap like SBs do to other ships and only the cap class SB can be fitted.
Always kind of wondered...on a Titan that is what...18 km long?...how does a 5km range SB hit someone in front of or behind it? This would go to the RP reasoning for a cap smartbomb. If you want something that will hit 5 km out from all edges of the ship you need more power to do it.
Not sure if a cap ship SB should do more damage...extra power reqs are there just to make it feasible on such a ship. That's a question for balance though.

ha smartbomb ships suck. yes they can kill frigs and shuttles, but if a Hac or BS comes threw that gate its dead.

I always thought smartbombs were a bit underpowered to be honest, although if a shuttle comes through that gate its not going to tank very well

The moral of the story is that 5km smartbombs are very close to useless, but 7.5km smarts are the s4x

A full rack of smartbombs eats a crapload of cap , good luck tanking with that. Their fitting requirements are pretty high anyway.
Smartbombs can't even be activated right after decloaking (they're subject to the 20-30 seconds cooldown) so your smartbomb BS/BC is pretty much a sitting duck. It's a specialized gate camping tool , much like remote repped lachesis sitting next to the gate , in range of any hungry blaster boat.
The worst part is undocking with such a ship. Anyone can station camp you freely since you can't activate smartbombs within range of the station !
Smartbombs are far from being overpowered , they just grew a new use after WTZ. Maybe game mechanics should be adjusted to not allow smartbomb activation if they're within strike range of the gate / station , instead of 5km. Then medium smartbombs wouldn't seem so useless compared to officer large smartbombs.

Unless you are in a cap ship which is becoming more common.

A high speed nos/smartbomb carrying cruiser or battlecruiser operating in tandem with a battleship/battlecruiser tank could be pretty unbelievably effective. High cap, but with that kind of damage output, you won't need it for long, and its not like you'll be using it constantly. I herd once about another Megathron with Nos and Smartbombs that killed off 15 ships with ease. The Kill Bobby vid the guy suffered no losses and raked in well over a billion isk in profit from loot, not to mention the largest collection of corpses Id ever seen. Mind you he did put up a well placed bubble. I'm not suggesting anything should happen to Smartbombs I'm just rather amazed at their effectiveness.

SB's are fine as they are, they have terribly short range, eat a lot of cap, and tend to attract police brutality in empire.
One thing that would be kinda nice actually would be a bomb with like 10km range and 75-100 damage, for people who need protection against those lame little unwebbable scrambler npcs but cant afford to spend eleventy billion isk on an officer bomb. _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

They're good against newbies.
That is, smartbombs have damn effective niche usages, yet they are easily avoidable weapon type. You seldom manage to catch same smart person twice.
In this way they are self balancing weapons; if they get too common, people will start to avoid them (say, instead of warping standard gate->gate, you go gate->random planet/belt->gate).
Reckon there are some issues/bugs with smarties (like able to use them at entrance on some stations), but those are fixable things.

Uum, unless a particular variant of smartbomb is bugged, you can't activate them within range of a gate or a station, which is very annoying in 0.0... ----------

Edited by: James Lyrus on 19/04/2007 09:10:57 I almost never use smartbombs. They're actually quite good in terms of dps, and area effect damage is always good. But at the same time, they're also easy enough to avoid. Oh, and a really stupid idea to use in lowsec or empire.
They're ok for popping frigates and small ships, but ... well, they also have to be within 5km of a BS, so... IMO that's self balancing.
Oh, and IIRC you can't fire them within 5km of a gate.

A smartbomb ship can do a fair bit of damage in a short amount of time, then its in trouble. The insanely high cap usuage makes tanking hard, as well as limiting the amount of time you can run the SBs even with no other modules running. ------------

No I dont think they are overpowered, they serve their purpose well and thats all.
1.) They take up a highslot 2.) They use nearly as much power as they produce dmg 3.) They have a very limited range - non faction 4.) They damage friend and foe

I'd say its 0% untill they finally make smarts useful again after that hitpoint boost, orr just manage to nerf everything else so that smarts are better than anything else. Which ever comes first --

oh please, shut up, its more than effective in lowsec to use.
i bet u never encountered a rokh fitted with 8 smarties? and u wont even scramble it because it has enough cpu to fit a full rack of stabs.
fit some rigs on it, and a large shieldbooster and u can just keep on blasting nubs in haulers, shuttles, frigs, intys, af's, cruiser and up to even tier1 battlecruisers if they are on autopilot and if u are fitted with capinjectors.
but its not overpowered, because when 1 ship has enough scramblers and enough damage, it will take u down along with the sentrys

Edited by: Northrop on 19/04/2007 21:59:40 Imo Smartbombs are just fine the way they are atm until ccp introduce that their damage drops exponential to distance of the ship that fired it off, like it would in reality and mathematics. (in which case not giving torps their splashdamage back would be not explainable with logic)
other story: smartbombs are an area energy weapon. so is the Doomsday device. Now why can one fire off its DDD when having a stargate in its damage radius while a smartbomb is not ven allowed to activate? i totally understand why CCP dont want nor can make a smartbomb useable within range of stellar objects - just imagine a 8 smarty bs undocking @ jita 4-4 n hit f1-f2-f3... so i say, change the DDD so that it cannot be fired of within the range of gates. the idea of wtfbbqing a whole fleet which was forced to jump in by whatever reason and then gets stuck in a large bubble camp is plain wrong, u may call it tactics, but in the end CCP end up with as many petitions as if that smarty-bs performed its stunt in jita.
