I think that to make the game more enjoyable for new people, everyone who is an experience player should take some time in-game to "Adopt A Noob".
Look around in the New player questions forum for some noobs, and email them in game and adopt them.
You don't necessarily have to pull them into your corp - just help them with some advice in game.

If there was a semi-offical way of doing it, ie people who want adoption get in a channel or something that would be cool, helping new peeps gives me a odd sence of satifaction in a way...
But randomley adopting people without them asking for it is just stalking -

I've done that for most of my eve career, not easy, many don't want help or are ******* trial members. I hate wasting time helping trial members that are not staying.

I think that last line should be:
Now, go pick up these supplies I need in high sec, and run them to me.

heh, one time this guy convo'd me when i docked in a noob school to buy books.
apparently the tutorial told him to talk to an agent, by starting a convo in the lower right hand of the screen. So he asks me if i have any jobs for him, and i tell him to go pick some supplies for me and bring them to my main system at teh time :P
it wasnt until about 1/2 way through explaining how to do it, and sending him isk to do it, that he firgured out that he had stepped off the path of the tutorial :P
But i helped him along for a few hours, got him into a frig, walked him through fitting, teh market, howto find an agent, howto mine etc.
I added him to my adress book, never saw him again, presumably he was on a trial account.
===
But yeah, 'adopting' a noob is a great thing to do, can be very rewarding, people dont forget what you did for them, and all the work you put into it isnt forgotten by the adopted.

I also convo'ed someone thinking they were an agent before.
but yeah whoever would be for this idea already does it - a good place is to adopt people from help channel
the idea is that you HAVE to help the trial members if someone sticks around for two weeks it means they learned a lot about the game and want to stick with it. they wont use the help as much as they would on their first few days (skill training and possibly restarting character)

you have a good point about helping trial people, esp about restarting teh character.
My first char had more charisma than anything else...thank fully somone told me to restart before i had much time in.
Its even more so now days, with the 800k sp that new chars start with, thats a month 'headstart' that alot of people put in incredibly random things

My old guild in another game used to play catch and release with noobs. I've thought about doing something similar. To avoid "helping" a new alt, I'd probably recommend watching the ones that go to the belts and mine one rock or are in some other way obvious noobs.
The more people have a positive experience in the beginning, the easier it will be to laugh off the inevitable negative ones. I've seen cans hanging outside noob stations with "Free Stuff" in them and someone waiting to gank the poor guy (how low can you get, seriously?).
It'd be nice to see the opposite.

thats where I found them...
but yeah once you become a errrrm surrgoate... be prepared for questions ... lots of them....
and some begging...(well T1 frigs doesnt hurt...)
but yeah, in my 3 months of doing that, I realized... well about half the newb gets molested no matter how often I tell them to "trust no one" and "stay in high sec" and "dont shoot 1st"...
and about half of them end up quitting.....(due to being molested by either A) they ended up in low sec for a mission and popped, B) some high sec greifer managed to get them...or C) just bored. )
edit: but yeah, we need to be nicer to newbs if eve wants to expand.. -Siggi- ""PvP" isn't only direct person to person combat, it can be very indirect. Selling an item on the market which somebody buys from you is resulting in another guy not getting a sale." Oveur |

I think this is an excellent idea! In addition, however, I'd also like to see the noobs be proactive about this as well and seek out the help they need.
Personally, when I first started playing, I knew I needed help and when I discovered Eve University, I joined. I've learned a lot, but there's also something to be said for some personal attention from an experienced player who knows the noob in question, their ship setup, their play style, in-game goals, etc. I also think this could go a long way toward making EVE more noob-friendly and that definitely couldn't hurt. As an added bonus, players who develop personal in-game relationships with other players are probably much more likely stick around long-term, and that's gotta be a good thing as well.
Here's something I'll address to the noobs reading this to help encourage this kind of help:
Recently, I've gotten some very useful help from some experienced players...some of it in-game, some of it right here on the forums. When an experienced player takes the time to help me out, even in a small way, I take the time to drop a quick EVE-Mail and say thank you. It's a small thing, but it can go a long way in helping to ensure that more help will be forthcoming when you need it.
I also very much like the idea of CCP setting up some sort of way for noobs in need of help and those willing to offer it to find and connect with each other easily. Perhaps a stickied thread, or even a entire "Adopt-A-Noob" forum section devoted to this might be there way to best help make this happen?

I have 2 n00bs in my private channel, I've handheld them a little and let them do their own thing. Tell them when someone is doing a mining op and filled the channel with other people who do interesting things they can get involved in. Give them more than their split of Ore or Mins if we mine. Answer any questions they have, and bail them out if they get into a mission they cant handle.
My private channel usually has someone in it 23/7 and they all help as they can. These n00bs are probably way richer than I was at their ingame age.
I think CCP owes me a cut of the subscriptions I got them. ______________________________

But to hell with the Dire's!
Actually it's all ORE's fault, most are crappy/slow/paper thin/totallu unused because they suck huge knobby rhinocerous prong. Not that that's an issue with me or anything...
On topic, helping rookies helps pass the time and stay interested in EVE for me tbh.

As a new player who just is about to take his trial account and make it a real account, i must say one thing.
The help im getting in the Rookie channel is nice. I usually try and figure things out myself, but the few questions ive had have been answered by others very nicely.
Its nice to see that veterans are willing to help us new guys out. Lookin forward to seein you guys in game.

This thread motivated me to watch help for an hour or so today.
I pulled a guy out who seemed acutally interested in eve, who asked alot of questions, but not stupid ones.
helped him for a few hours set up a frig and what not, its ASTOUNDING how much you remember how much they need to learn, to do, pretty much anything at all.
not really on enough these days to really be a good mentor, but hey, he should be ready to pwn all the other 2 day old nubs :P ill see how long i can keep him that way.

Sounds like a great idea. I personally love helping newbies (makes me feel smart). If anybody wants to start an Adopt-A-Newbie channel, I'd so hang out there. I'm in Eastern Australian timezone (GMT+10-ish)

Actually, and please take this in a none personal/sarcastic sense, you are a "noob"... at least as far as the adoption thing gets...
Why? Because the Adoptions channel is one of the default channels you will find in your channels&mailinglists list. So the tools have been there for ages, they just dont get used. The only question i heard on that channel is "What is this channel for?". I even asked it myself after some month of silence in there. I got no reply, not even in humor.
Now, someone could argue that a noob knows nothing about channels and stuff. And that person is allmost right. How should he know? But someone that doesn't check on all options/buttons/links he finds and then thinks about there uses, well that one is not a noob but more likely an idiot. Just like people that think that the bonus of a ship works a the minimum requirered level at all times... just like it would make any sense to give a per level description in the first place if that would be true. Just as an example.
Okay, now flame away. Just remember, stupidity is an excuse for nothing, not even stupidity, and i'm no genius either.

No, I'd hate to adopt a noob. It would be novel for the first 10 minutes though. However, I would fully endorse a system wereby I could pay isk into the development of a noob by giving them the chance to go to the eve universities (Ivy League etc).

It all went well until he kept on convoing me everyday even when I was in fleet battles and asked him not too, well he didnt stop so I gave up on him.
