So, I recently started a new character with the intent to challenge myself to see how far I can get in the game by only buying Skill Books and BPOGÇÖs (CCP Seeded Items) from the market.
IGÇÖve been playing the game over 10 years and I know my way around and before even beginning I knew there were some elements of this game that would be unobtainable and IGÇÖm ok with that. Things like T2 items will be impossible without going nullsec moon mining. And obtaining certain ships such as Faction ships will only be possible through Agents I have standings with.
Rules, No purchasing or selling from the market except for CCP seeded items (Skill Books and BPOGÇÖs) No assistance from players not participating in the challenge. Trading within corporation is allowed Only new characters that follow the rules allowed within the corporation.
Story so far, Completed Career missions Have the following ships, Frig, Destroyer, Industrial (all from career missions) Created Corporation Invited new character (player) to join in on the challenge Gained LVL 2 agent status Bought and built weapon, ammo, basic defence mods, & light drones.
Long term goal, Build a medium Engineering Complex or Citadel.
IGÇÖd love to get your input from an alternative point of view. If there is something you think I havenGÇÖt thought through or If there is something I should consider within this challenge please let me know.

What about private trading/barter and contracts? Might be able to make direct contacts with some null alliance that has the stuff you need. Or something with FWers. Is the point of this a test of making due without the market, or a test of self/tribe reliance?

Its a mix of self/tribe reliance and not being influenced by years of playing.
Its easy to get ahead these days buy getting a handout or for a more relevant example, As a 2 week old character we got a scram mod drop worth 90mil. Any normal person would be able to sell that on the market and buy many cruisers + fittings even without having the true skills to fly it nor caring about the loss that is inevitable.
Having taken two weeks of grinding missions, mining for ore to finally building myself a half decent frigate it really means a lot to me and when I'm about to lose it I get a rush like i haven't felt in nearly 10 years. The hard work creates value people in EVE don't seem to care about any more. This is the true reason I'm doing this.

I can kind of understand. Just recently I was talking with a mate about memorable 'losses that hurt' and I realised the loss that hurt the most and really gave me a heavy heart at the time was a Myrmidon loss in level 3 mission. :p

Id recommend allowing yourself to use the market.
Its a player market after all.
Or if you want to be hardcore pioneer spirit, barter what you have for things you need from other players by exchanging manually in hub stations.

You've set some goals and you're having fun - in my opinion that is the right way to play Eve. I suspect you'll reconsider self-sufficiency when you see just how much material is required to build a Fortizar or Azbel! The mechanics of harvesting minerals and PI are pretty boring, the fun part, for me at least, is planning what you're going to do with them and seeing that plan come together.
My choice is to leverage the knowledge and skill I have acquired to pay others to do what I now consider "the boring stuff". The connections and interdependencies between players in this game are amazing and a large part of what keeps me engaged. |

Back in the day I tried to do the same, but in 0.0 for extra difficulty level.
Went to Stain with a fresh trial character and tried to live by mining, running level 1-2 missions and scavenging wrecks from the locals. That was way before metal scraps in loot and reprocessing nerf, so one could establish and maintain a supply of T1 fitted disposable frigs and dessies just by running L1 security missions for the Sansha.
Jump clones required standings then, I circumvented that by setting up a 1-man corp with HQ in Stain and transferring medical clone back and forth between the corp HQ and starting school station when needed.
Got bored after two months or so though, but it was a good survival experience. |

Go do combat exploration in various parts of space, use the DS modules for your PVE needs. Hope for pirate frigate and cruiser BPC, build those and use or sell them. Go do ninja salvaging to build your own rigs and, if possible, use the loot from the mission ships you destroyed. |

Like all DIYers in RL it will be where to get the knowledge to get what you need from. This is the most invaluable thing I have built up for myself. What mission, rat, faction, etc supplies what and in what amounts. Even such things as Merc Commanders used to be the best drop rates anywhere for 'arbalest' Heavy Missile Launchers. If you know where to source things then this is a VERY viable profession/task to do even though it takes more time and effort than most people are willing to put into it to pull it off as you are literally trading time, read isk, for the ability to source it yourself.
Btw though moon goo towers might be out of your range the irony is that ninja mining in low sec using the syphons might actually get you enough that you could actually build a T2 ship. The other route is WH space and WH items to build a T3 cruiser which will actually be EASIER to do what you want all told than T2 anyway.
Knowledge is power here with this lifestyle. Moreso than any other "profession" in Eve ever will be.
Have you heard anything I've said?
You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?
That's right.
Had to end sometime.

Sort of along the same lines.... Skill injectors bummed me out, because that kind of wiped out main ISK-making activity of building and selling chars. Then gambling and betting sites going extinct bummed me out, because sports betting was my other main source of lazy ISK. Now they're both gone, so I have to earn ISK through ingame activities again. Eve is actually interesting and fun again! |

If you are not an Alpha I'd advise you complete all the career missions for all the factions (three sets of agents for each I believe).
This gives you a boatload of ships... some that you might need to train to use... but also I believe 24 ventures which will be useful. Even if you don't train for other racial frigates/destroyers... you can reprocess those ships to give needed materials to make your own stuff. You should also have over 100 million isk... which while you won't be buying a lot should get you some BPO's and skillbooks you'll need.

Or transfer that money to main :) Some prints can be quite expensive, but mission running should provide enough ISK for them - there is no other expense, like an expensive ship and module to buy. And if he stays in hisec, he will have to run missions to get megacyte and zydrine.
Interesting challenge, might want to try it at some point. |

I did something like this a few years ago and it can be a fun adventure. I'm trying to remember what rules I played by.
I had to build my own ships and ammo from BPOs or BPCs I didn't do any any of the tutotial missions (just started with a rookie ship). I used and reprocessed ship loot BPOs, BPCs, and skill books were the only thing I bought on the market. I could dump loot on the market for isk. LP was effectively worthless since I couldn't buy from the store.
I remember using a mix of guns and lasers, hauling was a chore. At the time finding a place to build things was a challenge. I was hunting the NPC convoys between stations at one point for equipment (feature not in the game anymore). I got busted once so badly by the customs officer that I had to file a stuck ticket because I was at -75million isk from contraband.

Good point Eternus8lux8lucis, while I love the idea of syphoning to make some T2 items that does require interaction with other players experienced advantages, however, if it wasnGÇÖt for them I could also put up a POSGǪ IGÇÖll keep this one in mind.
I hadnGÇÖt considered T3 as an option. I love it, finding a WH would be easier (I Hope) than mining moons. I will investigate T3 Manufacturing, Thanks for the input.

I had thought about doing the other career missions but never had any intentions to fly their shipsGǪ but for reprocessing. Not a bad idea, gets me some Meg and keeps within my ruleset.
Thanks for the tip.

I am going to try this again, I have an open character slot. End goal? No idea yet. Starting as Amarr to reduce initial ammo cost, but I'm an Omega so all guns are on the table.

So. This character was created on 30th December with a very similar process in mind.
The goal I sey myself is to build and fit an Astero, well it will be 2 Astero's one for exploration and one for hunting.
My rules are very similar to your's, I have to mine all my own materials be that ore, PI, salvage and loot reprocessing and moon materials. I can only buy NPC seeded stuff like skill books and BPO's, I can also buy from LP stores this is mainly to get the blueprint but also sisters probes and some skill books.
I sold everything that I got from the career missions and the PLEX from the buddy invite, so I started my adventure in a Velator with civilian gun, miner and afterburner and approx 1b ISK.
On my way out of the rookie system to my new home I picked up some BPO's for a Venture, Miner I and Hobgoblin I and started mining to build my first Venture. I f anyone cares it take about 47 loads of ore in a Velator to build a Venture and fit it out. Not that I was counting or anything, actually I was, I have detailed notes.
I now have 2 Venture's, 4 frigate's, 2 Destroyer's, 2 Industrial ships and a shuttle to go with my Velator.
NB. It took less then an hour for that first Venture to be destroyed. |

oh so your doing what ive looked at, you can go all the way if you open up to buying what you don't have access too unless you want to go moon mining but than its hard because the main moons are used up. with out the t2 mats youll be stuck to t1 guns and you wont be able to build meta guns unless you also use lp stores to get faction guns
