I hate warping.
Not because it's a timesink. Not because WTZ is manual only. Because of the hideous sound that results. There's a reason why property right next to an airport or a traintrack isn't terribly sought after. I've been playing for some months now, but I've always felt a little cheated at getting only a taste of the sounds in EVE. When I began my trial, I didn't make it two hours before having to turn off all sound just to get rid of the warp cacaphony.
Why are there sliders to alter the sound level of the UI, music, and voice, but for some reason warping is tied into the master volume? Can't we have a warp sound slider or a checkbox to disable it? Why is sound even in EVE? Surely no one can actually tolerate warping audibly in this game...
If you're hellbent on making us listen to either warp or nothing at all, perhaps we can have a redone warp sound? Or at least the option to choose a different warp sound? The warping in ST, for instance, is fairly elegant, at least in my opinion. It may not be to everyone's liking, but at least it doesn't sound like a jet flying through a tunnel.
I've managed without it for this long, but lately I've really been wanting to turn the sound back on in EVE. And I can't. This game has beautiful music. I love Aura's voice (although, apparently, there used to be a different voice; enabling that one should be an alternative as well). I've never really been into "immersion", but I do miss hearing the sounds of my weapons and modules.
I hate warping. Please help me. :( |

?
Guess I'm alone in this.
On an unrelated note, I've got some property sandwiched between an airport and a railroad that I'd like to sell you all. |

EVE has sound?!!! That is nothing but Blasphemy and heresy!!!
Well tbh, very few players turn on eve sound on, since many contribute lag to it, and eve sounds where never really its strongest point. So get ur MP3 player in the back ground and ur all good.
+the warp sound is not that bad, if you will compare it to modern day rockets that can make ur ears bleed.

Yeah, in EvE sound is pretty much only used by total newbies. It doesn't confer any advantages, and it lags, glitches (in my case, anyway, I have to take off my headset to excape the unholy *****ling) and annoys. The only useful sound is the chirp-chirp-chirp of our ship auto-targeting after being locked, for knowing when to alt-tab away from the **** and kill rats while mining.

Sounds doesn't cause lag, at least not for me.
I am far from being a total newbie...

It would be nice to have a little more control over the sound. Currently 95% of sound is clumped together as generic sound which you can't turn up or down without other sound being turned up or down.

Nonsense. Each missile type has a different explosion sound. Try to differentiate railguns from blasters without sound !
Sound feedback is important , especially with lag - to know when your new movement command has been acknowledged.

Edited by: Trovax on 01/05/2007 15:23:31 Ive always had my sound on for the last 2 years almost. Didnt realise it produced lag? I'm not so sure it does. Think its just a myth.
Might be wrong tho.

I agree. The warp sound is bad. Also it seems to have a very unfortunate timing feature, because it usually comes when I try to listen to something else. ----- http://games.chruker.dk/eve_online ----- Top wishes: - No daily downtime - Faster training on sisi - Updated data export - Speedup IGB table rendering |

The warp sound is annoyingly loud, and I think it resembles a low-flying jet, thus for me it isn't very 'spacey'.

I would prefer hyperspace graphics and such, like the stuff from StarGate SG-1. Just my thoughts.

First, sound only causes lag if your computer is unable to process that data. Second, the sound EFFECTS (warping, guns shooting, aura, etc.) are relatively small files, so having them on shouldn't cause lag. The ONLY thing that can POTENTIALLY lag you system is the music, which you can mute (problem solved). If you're experiencing lag due to sound, mute the music, and that should help you out.
Also, lag on the user end is either caused by a bad internet connection or by problems allocating system resources. Activating ANOTHER program and having that program run in the BACKGROUND does NOT solve a lag problem. You are still using a lot of system resources (indeed, probably more since you're running two programs), and running a program in the background uses up a lot of RAM, which you need to run EVE nice and smooth.
As for the warp sound, yes, it eventually causes your ears to bleed. Aside from turning your sound off, there's really nothing you can do to help out with the warping sound, though I sympathize with your complaint.
