I'm still confused regarding what problem it is that AOE weapons will actually fix.
You will get omgwtfpwned if you're called primary by any large fleet regardless of whether they're sat in a group or not. Lets look at an example:
Say group A is defending a system from group B by camping a gate. In the current system group A will have a number of sniper battleships sat at a point roughly 160km from the gate. On the gate will be the support gang and most likely a large bubble. Group B jumps in, the fight starts, primaries are called, ships die. Group A has the advantage as their battleships can warp out, unless group B uses some clever covops positioning or something and manages to dictor bubble them. Numbers and good target calling will decide the battle.
Now assume AOE weapons are introduced in the same situation. Group A will spread out their battleships all around the gate, but still at their optimal range. When group B jumps in they will still be stuck in the bubble, they'll not only get nuked by the enemy battleships in exactly the same way as before, but also from the AOE weapons as they'll all be stuck on the gate, and they'll have no chance of tackling group A's battleships with a dictor as they're all spread out.
So what exactly has has the AOE weapons solved? Nothing as far as I can see. You'll still get popped before you can say "omgwtfpwned" if you're called primary, perhapes even quicker with the AOE weapons. Defensive fleets will just spread out, but remain at their optimal ranges so nothing changes there.
And what has been nerfed? Small close range support ships, they can't be hit by the damage dealing battleships at the moment, but they'll easily get nuked by AOE weapons, same goes for drones and fighters. And, most irritatingly in my view, you've completely nerfed the use of logistics in fleet battles, something that is actually interesting tactically but that requires ships to be in close proximity to each other.
I agree with Kieron on this topic; "Huh? What? It makes no sense!" --------------
