It has been a while since the last update concerning the Alliance Tournament, we wanted everyone to know that, even though it has been out of the spotlight, it has not been forgotten. There are some potential changes to be made to the format and we want feedback.
Interested? Want to see what changes are proposed? Wondering why pods have been mentioned? Find out in Sadie's blog Burning Pods - The Alliance Tournament Redux.

I actually would like combat in eve to look more like combat in the tournaments, not the other way around. ------

The arena will be much larger than last time and at the moment we have only one module on the ban list. Which one I won't say because a girl needs to keep some secrets ( so we can smile devious and scare coworkers or in this case eve players.

I like larger teams, dunno about less module restrictions, agree with blackhorizon that warping within arena should be allowed and /heal 0 as a weapon (like last time) is idiotic.

Placing the torny right after Rev 2.0 should be interesting as I wonder how many will have fully adapted to the upcoming changes including HEAT, will it play a major part?
Anyway, like last year, I look forward to it, but its still a few months down the line so lets see how this 'pay for EvE TV' works out, as mentioned in EON.

2 Things.
1. Fighting for honor and glory instead of fancy ships: brilliant. Best way to deal with potential conflicts about who is getting favored by whom. As a suggestion, I would make a 'gallery of champions' somewhere in Caldari space with an inspace statue/monument for every tournament winner nicely lined up together. Something to brag about, but no real advantage in game.
2. Keeping secrets about what you're gonna allow/disallow: big mistake. If you try to keep secrets you always risk getting accused of party X or party Y knowing about it beforehand. Look at how companies listed on stock-exchanges deal with it. Immediate disclosure of relevant information is much more likely to induce trust than claiming you kept it a secret to everyone for a long time. Transparancy creates trust.
If you tell people 1 week before the tournament a surprising rule-change, you risk getting accused of 'but party X knew this 2 months ago, no fair'. If you publicize it as soon as you decide it, and preferably months before the tournament, there is no room for such accusations. signature removed - please contact us to find out why (include the URL of your sig) - Jacques([email protected]) |

I'm really looking forward to the next tournament and since Revelations 2 is stil a bit to go i'm pretty sure that i could write a module for our killboard so people can track their team's progress on their own sites too.
My guess for the banned module: Hull Repairer... because structure tanked ships are imbalanced as a Raven has less structure than a Megathron :D ___________________

I like the changes to rules and battlefield to mimic true eve pvp more. Yay for allowing podding. Adding that true special flavor for steppping on your victims
Regarding the prizes, Im disappointed though. After bob has scored two victories, and earned a mothership and the equivalent of 300 Bil in unique BS prizes, we now get to fight for honor and glory?

My alliance allready has some discussion on this blog on our forums. And voices allready went up vs the podding rule. The logic behind the podding rule is to make it more risky to use implants. So to level out the playing field.
Point is that small alliance with less funds will not be able to replace lost implants easily. On the other hand big alliances with big wallets aren't influenced by the loss of a few complete hi grade sets. So the podding rule will only favour those with big wallets.
I think there shouldn't be implants in the tournament at all. If GM's are able to verify that I had implants when I ask for reimbursement surely they can also check if someone has imps installed before they enter the arena.
So if you want to even out the playing field for big/small ( rich/poor ) alliaces I say that implants should be banned from the tournament completely.

Interesting.
Regarding the banned module, either cyno or cloaks. Cyno can be negated by hosting it further from Empire space ("Oh look, the Polaris system has moved!") and the cloak can be negated by someone locking you.
The podding changes are much welcomed, since it was somethign I was asking for from the first tournament.
You take what is offered. And that must sometimes be enough. |

This man speaks the truth. We'll simply buy 30 x each implant set needed to cover any problems and sell the excess later.
Smaller alliances can't do that so it simply doesn't change anything apart from making the larger alliances stronger and a small isk-sink into the tournament.
However, I disagree with the conclusion to ban pirate implants simply because CCP are laying out the plan to make the combat more realistic. Taking away those implant sets would simply nerf it back again.
Decide which way you want to go and stick with it. dbp

pvp in eve seems to be a war of resources, aka who can get more pilots, and better ships and modules. shouldn't the tournament play be about who can field a better team, aka who can field the 10 most diverse ships. i think that everyone should show up, and ccp makes a replacement ship for them for each round, and gives them replacement implants if they get podded. or hell, they could even just let you use whatever you want.
my .02 isk says that the tournament should be all about strategy and tactics, and have nothing to do with how fat your (or your alliance's) wallet is

Edited by: Waragha on 26/04/2007 15:55:46 This doesnt make sense. First of all the pirate implants are an integral part of many tactics and they are really not that hard to get. I've been in the tourny twice, both time the whole team have fully funded their implants (no alliance help). That goes aswell for the team that killed the impoc.
Second.) The alliances that DO spit money at the teams will have even more of an edge now, since they can afford to replace them. I would maybe be more carefull when investing, when i knew it was my own money. Didn't anyone on the tourny planning team think of that?
I like that larger teams, but the full allowance of modules is a bit iffy.. I guess i'll wait to critizise till you have something more concrete. Though the ISK reward is pretty *** (zomg i agree with tyrrax), ramp it up to some sort of LPs that you can buy faction ships with of your chosen faction.
Possibly integrate this into the corp tourny aswell.
My 2 cents

Quote: The prizes are subject to change too. It will be a cash reward, first of all, and other rewards will be based on the faction of your choice. We have no plans at the moment to create new ships which are then sold for ISK to collectors, or to give away motherships. You are fighting for honor and glory. You will have to be ready for anything and everything.
So how much cash will BoB get for winning this one, since they wont get any more State Issue ships or Moms?

I hope you are not intending on allowing ECM, it was and still is a bad idea.
Allowing podding, like others already pointed out, will just make the tourney harder for smaller alliances with less ISK.
Bigger teams while maintaining the points system sounds cool, should bring more variety in lineups. Warping around in the arena or anything like that will probably make the match too messy for the already fairly confused(sorry :P) commentators to keep track of.

Some further updates.
*Tournament is now scheduled more towards August then shortly after the patch. *Throwing matches is discouraged with the point systems, and we are thinking of alternate ways of punishing teams who act cowardly by warping out of the battlefield. We can be very creative more creative then /heal 0 *If an alliance wants to invest 50 billion isk in implants, when the rewards will most likely not cover the loss of a few sets, then that will be up to the management of the alliance in my opinion. We will discuss it more though. *At the moment all modules are allowed with only one or two exceptions. If I tell you which modules these are it will give away a lot more details of the tournament then we want to at this point.
Keep in mind these are just the things we are thinking of doing if the tournament was held tomorrow, a lot can still change until the final rules are published. Would you rather have us keep silent for more months and then publish all the rules and tournament format?
Also this time the tournament is run and organised by a large group of people including GM Nova, Sharkbait, GM Xamother, Ginger and other people have been dragged into tiny dark rooms and made to go over numbers and give feedback.

One of the few redeeming aspects of ships like the Corvus and the Storm was that they might be re-issued in the future. In those ships' case, there was never any guarantee that they wouldn't be. I feel the injection of a large amount of liquid isk is bad both from an economic standpoint and from a gameplay standpoint. If I wanted magical-isk-from-the-heavens, I'd run a couple 10/10's. My personal budget for the last tournament was around one billion isk. I probably had the least isk of those on our team. Money is NOT a focus for most of the people participating in this tournament.
From a purely balance-based perspective, top prize last time was, what, 7 unique battleships? If no more are ever issued, that puts the top prize at somewhere in the vicinity of 500 BILLION isk. At the risk of sounding whiny, that's not fair to anyone if you plan to give the equivalent in CASH to the next winner.

Very much agreed with the above (and with all those who have said likewise here already). If you really want to see a competitive tournament, then remove the one factor that creates an unbalance when measuring who can afford to expend the most isk.

On the topic of implants vs no implants: Although it would increase the logistics of the fleet planning you could incorporate the implants into the point system.
So specific ships types have a point cost, and full implant sets have a point cost. (low grade sets less than high grade)
The total points available to the participants should allow for some creative fleet planning without creating an overpowering advantage for any of the Uber rich alliances.

Good points here.. As some have stated already, certain big alliances will just splurge out on full implant sets if podkilling is allowed while the implant sets are also allowed. The smaller alliances will think twice before risking the implant clones so the fights might be even more one sided.
I'm guessing capitals will be out of the question, so even fitting a cyno mod shouldn't be illegal (unless you can find a way to get a DD in).. making cans illegal would make for interesting fights but most real pvp involves ships carrying cans to carry extra charges, so those would be out.
I would hope cov ops cloakers are allowed for the tactical redeployments, but i'm guessing no here.
So multispectral jammers? If you do want to try jamming you need to chose? Prolly not if ecm is allowed..
I wouldn't put it past some of you guys to exclude cap injectors, which would make kitties cry.. doing the whole logistics thing is pretty gruesome too, the oodles of repair drones could seriously make it annoying..
I hope the rules will be set in stone at least before the sign-ups close.. please..
PS: The cash prize after the last tournaments would be fun for the corp league you were planning (of course Le Monde's leaving doesn't help in planning all this), but after giving out the motherships and navy ravens and then state caldari and minmatar ships.. is bad mkay.. it doesn't look 'balanced and fair' at all...
All the stuff above does not necessarily reflect my corp, my alliance or even me.. Drone guide.. |

The total points available to the participants should allow for some creative fleet planning without creating an overpowering advantage for any of the Uber rich alliances.
Not a bad idea, except that enforcing and administering that rule would be a nightmare. What about partial sets, for instance? Or some of the nifty non-set items for slots 6-10?

Yeah, there is more administrative overhead on the part of the event coordinators to verify the pilots have the right implants/ship point totals.
I just singled out pirate implant sets as it seems to be a contention point. How much does a full Snake or Crystal set go for? Well over a Bil, more than some faction Battleships. It's the one issue on this chain that everyone agrees something needs to be done about.

Keep giving out state issue tempests and ravens, totally unfair if BoB got the jackpot prize and everyone who wins it in future get less than 1/10th of what they got last time as a reward..
I got quoted for truth by Tyrrax.

Edited by: Armundo on 01/05/2007 22:44:35 If you really want this Tournament to be about skills, and tactics, (as it should be imo), you should remove the implants all together, to level the playing field. With Implants it will still be a match of who has the bigger wallet, especially if you are going to allow podding.

That's not true, implants are a big part of many tactics. AF:s and logistics ships tank a lot better with halos and shieldtanking is rubbish without crystals. Not allowing implants would make AF's (more) useless and shieldtanking gimped compared to armortank and rigs. I agree with you on the podding part tho, it really just supports the rich alliances.
I hope CCP spends more time thinking about issues like: - ECM and it's randomness(incl. ECM drones) - swarms of repair drones and what they can do - rigs, they make the turtletankchain(tm) more powerful than ever, while damage rigs hardly are of any use.

Nope they are not, very rare pvp pilots fly with full or low grade pirate set simply becouse they are too expensive to buy and lose becouse u ran into a dictor or bubble camp.
There are ppl who use them regulary but afaik they usually are owners of multiple (or one damn good) T2 bpo, or run heavy industry/mission whoring and use pirate implants in "npc clone". My Latest Video:Kaamos

Good idea but won't fly. Real eve combat is an entire fleet getting vaporized once an hour every hour by a non-tackleable invincible ***** machine which jumps out 15 seconds later.
Tourny's that last 15 seconds, dude, THAT IS ENTERTAINMENT.
