Originally by: Buraken v2 Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo (maybe not with the Wii perhaps though?) and all other game console manufacturers loose money on selling consoles, always.
This is a huge myth about consoles. It's true that both iterations of the XBox lost money (Microsoft's game division hasn't posted a profit since the introduction of the console, IIRC). Sony has usually made a profit on the PlayStation lineup (but not always).
Nintendo, although thought of as radical for its new control scheme, is actually extremely conservative from a business perspective. Excepting a brief period after a price drop on the Gamecube, Nintendo makes money on every console they ever made. They are extremely good at controlling costs. For instance, the GBA requires a separate processor to play older Game Boy games. The DS can't play older Game Boy games because it doesn't have one, since it would have added to the cost.
While Nintendo might have been a distant third in the last generation of console wars in terms of consoles sold, they were the clear winner in terms of profit. Nintendo is an old company (they sold playing cards long before video games came along), and both Sony and Microsoft are young upstarts in comparison. They know how to run a business.

Funny how narrow minded some people are.. you, your friends, some people you know might not purchase an OS.. but there are alot of people that buy them pre-bundled. New users, people that dont like to build machines, people who dont know what there doing, companys, OEM verions, people who buy laptops and people who buy on finanace.
When XP took off, every said it was bad, people hated it, and most people said they would not move to it... Now look today, most desktop users use XP..

Edited by: Iasius on 01/05/2007 14:39:22 .. and lots of people who have XP PC's think they need new hardware because the silt of settings and dross that has grown within the OS has slowed the PC to a crawl.
Windows is a terrible consumer product. When you turn on your HDTV you dont get a message about a driver not loading so you have to watch a movie in black and white.
Microshaft cant dumb down NT engine OS's including Vista. At some point users will have to get mucky.
Most home users should have a thin client PC connected to the internet. But people want to own their own PC real estate and brag about their hardware. I do cos im a geek. But most office and home users dont need a blazing PC with an obese OS on it. ................................................ I post with my main, so should you. Alt's are hecklers |

Bad analogy. HDTVs are often setup incorrectly and don't tell you otherwise. Lots of people spend thousands on a setup and then connect it with an ordinary coax cable. Sometimes even the cable company installer will do it wrong.
Rather than computers getting simpler, consumer electronics is getting more complicated. Most people don't want this added complication. Most people don't even want a clutch peddle on their car.

QFT. I still can't get my DVD player and my HDTV hooked up without some sort of interference, despite upwards of 10 hours of fiddling.
I'm passably good with computers, but TV's and their kin are completely beyond me........... --------

Exxon is the biggest company in the world revenue wise. However its profits are only approx 10% of revenue. Microsofts profits were round about 30% of its revenue = a better position.
