Does anyone know how well a maelstrom would be able to do lvl 4 missions with this setup( BS lvl V)?
8 1400mm scouts
XL booster Shield amp 3 T2 hardners cap injector
3 T2 gyro 2 T2 PDU
Or is it not worth it to do lvl 4 in a mael?

Depends on what you compare it to. It is better than a Rupture, but won't hold a candle to a Raven --------- There is no 'n' in turret There is no 'r' in faction There is no 'a' in Kestrel There is no 'e' in Caldari

i am considering this for lvl4 missions, and i think it would tank better, but not be more usefull that a raven:
8x 1400mm (insert faction smartbomb if necessary)
1x gist c-type large/x-large shield booster (isk dependant) 3-4x hardener 1-2x shield boost amp
2x PDU II 2x Gyro II 1x DCU II
should perma tank 400dps+

Ditch the cap injector and replace it with a 100MN Afterburner II. I'd recommend downgrading to 1200mm as well, as the tracking is 25% better on them. If you are still worried about your capacitor, two of the cap recharge rigs should be plenty to keep your booster going a while, even if it's a plain old C5-L booster.

That setup looks mediocre at best. No afterburner, no damage mod, and way too much emphasis on its cap. At most you'll need two PDS IIs and two CCC rigs, leaving one rig for tracking (which does help take cruisers down a bit faster). And why gimp your setup by removing two of your big guns for dinky launchers? Did you suddenly lose your drones?
Sorry, but stick with something a bit more orthodox and you'll get better results without compromising survivability.

Edited by: Redora on 30/04/2007 20:50:41 Just bought one for L4 Missions: Thinking of running thus
8x 1200mm Proto Arty
1x 100MN AB II 1x C5-L XL SB 2x SBA 2x Mission Specific Hardeners
2x PDU 2x Gyro II 1x DCU II
1x Therm rig 1x EM rig 1x Damage Rig
Thoughts? I want the EM/Therm rigs on there so I've got a decent all around tank if I put on EM and Invuln hardeners (something like 60% resists across the board with kin the lowest), but those are open to change as well. Biggest concern is tankability... Is 2 SBA better than 1 with 3x hardeners? Or is a 2/2 sba/hardener split better? ---

I have been using a maelstorm for L4 missions for a good while now. i used to loose tons of phoons (my fault for a bad setup) but my maelstorm has held up fantastic well.
In my mind, their is 2 parts to your tank, passive and active. The passive is resists (I use active hardeners though, so this can be misleading) and normal sheild regen. Active is your booster.
PDS can help the passive tank a lot. With 5 PDS on (i know, this is excessive), you can auto regen 12 DPS passivly and have 12K sheilds. I sometiems do this when I am having a really hard time tanking. I did it when i was scared to die to!
This is what i use:
8 guns, either 650mm ACs for close range missions of 1200mm atry for ranged missions. The arties aren't so great in close up deadspace, imo. If i sometimes replace an AC with a large named NOS.
XL sheild booster II 4x active hardners (tech2 for the win!) sheild boost amp (this does over 250 DPS os sheild repair with good all resists)
2-3 PDS, 2-3 Gyrostabs.
on occasion, with I have CPU probs with the tech2 boosters, so I am foreced to drop a low slot. i typically ass an overdrive injetor. That little speed boost lets my AC boat chase down the BSs that orbit at 37km. Works for me.
For rigs, I currentl have 1 cap charge rig and one cap defence rig (reduces cap useage of booster). I need another cap charge rig.
This mofo can tank some serious aggro. There are L4s from which i sometimes need to warp out of when i aggro the whole room, but I have yet to come evn close to dying.
Lastly, i think you REALLY need tech2 light drones to kill the tackling frigs. They work a chanrm, and when the frigs are dead, recall and send out med and hvy drones.

So in the end, would you say a well fit maelstrom can do lvl 4s well enough?

It is not about rep per cycle, it is all about how long you can keep that rep going.
I am going to use a large gist c-type, because I will be able to run it forever, ie, I wont be totally screwed when I run out of capacitor, and watch all my modules turn off, and me slowly, but surely dieing.

ok, looking at these posts, i came up with a new setup:
8x 1200mm artillery (so you can actually hit something)
1x gist c-typle large shield booster 2x rat specific hardeners II 1x invulnerbalilty II 1x SBA (II if you can) 1x Lif fuled booster (not t2, or i dont think it will permarun)
2x gyrostabilizer II 2-3x PDS II 0-1x capacitor flux coil (less cap, more regen, but if it permaruns, quantity does not matter)
3x CCC
550 dps tanking, for ever

Maelstrom is all about the tank. I'm thinking that the maelstrom will be the "go-to" tank platform when the new level 5 missions come out. The bird will be used much like CS are currently used to run high end complexes.
8x 1200 II's in the highs
1x Gist B type XL Booster 1x DG Boost Amp 2x pith xtype primary hardners 2x pith xtype secondard harnders
(optional layout for accross the board damage)
1x pith xtype primary hardner 1x pith xtype secondary hardner 2x DG Invuln fields
Lows
1x DCU II 2x Gyro Stb II 2x PDU II
3x cap recharge rigs
This provides for the ability to tank massive DPS constantly for near forever with good skills (need a bio break in the middle of a mission? hit the booster and then go and everything is fine when you come back). With BS LVL 5 and a second DB boost amp you get better than 1,000 shield hp regen every 4 seconds. The pith xtype hardners give you great resistances. This tanks an unbelievable amount of DPS for nearly forever.

Will the 1200mm setups( only T2 items) be able to complete most lvl 4 solo( all skills at 4 or 5)?

I've not personally used it, but I'm told it works well. Full skill it hits 99% of the time, and can 2 volley cruisers. It'll take a bit longer on BSs though.

Edited by: Krakkan on 02/05/2007 01:08:45 this is what i used/use when i have time to grind some.. all T2 except rigs.
8 1200mm
1 Large shield booster (XL is overkill imo ) 2 Hardeners (change for missions) 1-2 shield amps 1-2 tracking comps
2-3 damage mods 1 damage control rest PDS's
3 shield resist rigs
works great obviously i change a bit depending on mission

I was doing great in mine til I was gang raped by bloods, got jumped in cargo delivery, long story. No cap = b00m.
My fit: High: 8x 1400s (anything shy of t2 due to grid)
Mid: XL CL5 4 hards SBA (once again, not t2 due to cpu this time)
Low: t2 gyros/pdus (whatever feels right)
CCC rigs.
I'd swap out a hard for the cap injector if I still had one though.
Flying a phoon now and like it a LOT more.
