Edited by: Silentbrick on 30/04/2007 21:49:54 First off, let me explain I totally understand and accept the legitimate use of espoinage in EVE. Spies and counterspying is understandably necessary in EVE, especially in regards to 0.0 politics and wars.
However I really question the sanity of those that think putting spies in Eve University will gain them much. What is the point? What can you possibly hope to gain? Does our upcoming frig tourney represent some kind of profound and dangerous threat to a 0.0 alliance? Are you worried we're planning to invade and conquor your space? Do we truly have the cheat code so you can play Eve on God mode?
While yes, this is a funny and amusing thing to ask, it's also serious. There's tons of spies in Eve University for some bizarre reason and I'm just curious as to what makes it so necessary to have spies in our corp? And if you intend to declare war on us, are you really that afraid of us? (Okay, so we do tend to have a good record when we go to war.)
Inquiring minds want to know!

I'm not that keen on spying anyway, it's only one step up from corp thieves, but yeah that does sound a little lame...

Maybe alliances are trying to learn the lessons you teach in EVE University, only they're too embarrassed to admit it.

If this is the case, i sincerely hope those alliances get in touch with e-uni diplomats as i'm sure they will be more than willing to teach if there is a mutually benefitial agreement. ------ aka BinderAJ |

I don't think its really your corp they mean to spy on.
Your corp/alliance could be a stepping stone to bigger fish. I mean eve university in employment history looks better than nothing and thats for sure. ---------------------------

The only realistic/sane reason I can think of is that they are trying to scout possible promising recruits, beyond that I must admit I'm fairly baffled.

I could see a spy bieng very usefull in EVE University. Its not necessarily about getting intel.
So if alliance X suddenly starts seeing EVE Uni pilots flying around its space. Or Alliance Y's haule got ganked by a group of 4 or 5 of you. You dont necessarily know which persons idea it was, and ideally the spy just incited the pvp, he wasnt present.
Spies are usefull for more than just intel.

IVY League (Eve University) doesn't go into claimed space, and there is a strick policy on no gank'n, theiv'n or scam'n. IVY also doesn't claim any space.
Any member that does any of the above would get kicked from the corp.
So your while your 'idea' is valid for any normal alliance, it doesn't really hold up to IVY League/Eve University because of the way we operate.

most likely people want to put alts in there to see if there's anything to learn without committing their main. we see alot of that in sniggwaffe as well. it's not the same thing as 'spying' persay but it looks like it. just treat the new ones like mushrooms and you're okay. keep them in the dark and feed them ****.

Yeah, its quite possible that they're prepping spies to join enemy alliances. Like, make an alt.. set up a pvp background for him (EVE Uni), and then in a few months apply to the corp you really want the spy in.
First thing you do in espionage, is set up your background/backstory/alternate identity. So maybe that's what they're doin with Eve Uni.

Edited by: Ragornok on 01/05/2007 02:11:39 I've been told your forums are quite useful tools to teach concepts. Not that I've been a spy in there, but I know somebody who has. He was quite impressed with the lessons. Unfortunately he got booted in a cleanup before he could copy/paste anything to share with me.
And as you mentioned, you guys have a pretty good reputation in combat so far. So it might not be that they want to beat you, but to emulate your formula for success.
But information, no matter how small, can be valueable. Biggest things I can think of are gaining info on former members, and what info you have on other groups that you may have fought recently.

Well said, mate!
Offtopic: Why are you D2 guys keep on coming to Syndicate to pew pew here and there while you have such a serious "enemy at the gate" back home? Just curious...
Ontopic: So how exactly do those spies operate and How did you catch them? Other than that, I must agree that EVE University looks neat on one's employment history ;)

Straight answer:- POS War stand off, guys want to roam and pew pew.
We had numbers tonight for example, and we dont expect Seleene to just throw his Nyx away (although he did give us a little go at station ) Big fleet fights with capitals involve far more posturing than actual fighting. Some guys actually want to fight, and go looking for it elsewhere.

Edited by: Plutoinum on 01/05/2007 10:43:38 Maybe they are there for their personal reasons with an alt, like enjoy the athmosphere. Guess it's different to most other alliances. So the 'spying' might just be a side-effect. Or some might be afraid to appear like a newbie in their own alliance/corp and so ask their questions somewhere else. Don't know.

Alliance warfare is boring, endless hs of camping or waiting to get 50ppl to shoot at one target and watch it go *pop*; i'm sure many have considered doing an alt, as this gets very boring and you do need a break from it all.
If not that, probably for employment background or/and for good recruits.
