This is just something completely new... a whole new genre of entertainment centers that among other things play BluRay movies...
We've all seen it in the past.. DVD players with more than one function.. DvD+Harddisk Recorders and the average media center..
But what we have here is an entertainment center, that not only can play the next generation movie format, but it can actually function as much more.. you can browse the web with it, listen to your favorite music with it.. store your photo's.. you can even install linux on it if you wish...
And to top it all off.. you can play SNES, NES, PS1, PS2 games on it.. and.. PS3 games....
It has a processing power that puts almost all general computers and consoles to shame...
And.. you get all this... CHEAPER than 95% of all current regular BluRay players..
How would you rate such a device??!?! And what is it?? it's A PS 3!!!!
I ******* HATE some of the critics and journalists that bash PS3 because it's a "console" thats way too expensive... IT AINT A FRICKIN' CONSOLE MORON!!!!

The jury is still out on the ps3 i cant say a single launch title has interested me in the slightest with the majority being out for over a year on the 360, maybe when some major games come out eg metal gear solid and gran turismo etc then it will be worth buying one but at the moment im happy with my 360.

No, it is a freakin CONSOLE.
Surfing the web or listing to music on your PS3? Store photos on a PS3? Come on, these are stupid excuses for owning that overprices pile of junk.

My computer plays Blu-Ray movies also. All it needed was a 10 dollar H.264 decoder, CoreAVC. The Playstation 3 would cost nearly 3000 dollars if you included the 1080p HDTV required, but my PC can play these Blu-Ray/HD-DVD movies without any upgrades.
Mulling about the cost of the player itself is silly; the price of an HD-DVD player is falling incredibly rapidly and they'll probably be 150 bucks within the year. Last I heard Wal-Mart was already selling them for a few hundred bucks.
Blu-Ray itself is going to die like Betamax did; discounting the "sales" of Casino Royale due to it being bundled with the PS3 in Britain, Blu-Ray discs have been an almost complete failure. And with Wal-Mart picking HD-DVD over Blu-Ray, its fate is sealed, basically.

It can install a very very limited, buggy version of Linux. Sony puts very serious restrictions on operating systems that run on the PS3.

So like my PC already does?

Yes, the PS3 is fast for its price, but its completely useless for most applications because the PS3 does not allow you to use the stream processors in any operating system you install. It is also fast only in certain specific types of operations that can be sent to the stream processors; many developers are quitting the PS3 platform because its too slow at ordinary operations to have effective AI for games.

I haven't been tracking it, but last I heard the ability to install Linux on the PS3 was very limited. Maybe its improved since then? I remember the PS3 support being very experimental.
OK, correction to my statement:
Originally by: Wikipedia Sony currently implements a hypervisor restricting RSX access, though the graphics are fast enough for emulation of some old systems. Linux has access to 6 of the 7 SPEs, and IBM provides an introduction to programming parallel applications on the PlayStation 3.
They did add support for the SPEs to Linux. The current limitation is that there is no graphics acceleration, so games and such are basically impossible.
On the topic of speed, they ported Folding@Home to the X1950XT and Playstation 3; the X1950XT turned out to be 2.5 times faster , though it could theoretically be due to not using the full potential of the PS3.

I was absolutely convinced that the punchline of that was going to be "It's a PC!".
My PC plays high-def video, music, watches TV, picks up thousands of radio programs, can access the internet, has extensive professional office apps, and can play 99% of all games ever released either natively or through emulation.
And this particular PC I'm using now only cost me ú500. An office near me went bust and sold off all it's hardware- you don't get that kind of luck with gaming machines.
If Sony really did want to create some sort of interactive multimedia center, why on earth didn't they just release a PC?! --------

Why would I want that? A HDDVD is already brilliant quality, and so much cheaper than BluRay. Bluray isnt the next generation until it has become the next generation. As far as I can tell, HDDVD's will be of roughly the same quality and so much cheaper because they're more efficient to make and run... SNES, NES, PS1, PS2? I have a snes, nes, ps1 and I dont use the latter two, so why would I want something that can play them all? Processing power that puts PCs to shame? "PowerPC-base Core @3.2GHz" is what it runs afaik, and yes that is good. But, Moores law states that processing power will double every 18 months, and developers strive to meet it. So far theyve exceeded it amazingly, and with octocore and 16-core processors in development, I'd say that within a year the PS3 will be as outdated as the Mac concept. Also, yes it is a console. What was it designed to do? Play games, what does it do? Play games and movies and has limited internet access. Wow, I'd rather buy a PC of the same spec for 3/4 of the price God damned fanboys. ---

The PS3 (at the current moment) does not have better looking graphics than the Xbox 360. They're actually a little worse.
Is hard to program for, which is unacceptable to many when they have PCs and the 360 as alternatives. And those have bigger markets.
Doesn't have Gears of War nor Halo 3. Doesn't have any planned games that will make it more special than a 360.
With Toshiba already licensing the HD-DVD spec to manufacturers out of Japan (read:China) expect a HDDVD player to start out at $300 and slowly head towards $150.
PS3's a failure unless a few of those planned titles turn out to be killer apps.

Hardly a point to base an argument on. If Halo 3 is anything like Halo 2, itll be sub-par to the (yes, I'm saying this ) excellent original game. Its nothing revolutionary anymore in terms of AI, Gameplay or even Graphics, it's just another game. Gears of war was good, yes, but people were only oggling at the clever physics and good graphics (the engine was an unfinished version of the Unreal 3 engine so will be less pretty than Ut2007 and the like when they finally come out) ---

It doesn't matter what you and I think. What matters is that we can safely say that Halo 3 will be selling a lot of copies, which is what matters. Shiny graphics go a long way when it comes to the Xbox crowd.
I've always hated Halo. It's just a FPS (which is nothing new to a PC gamer who's played Doom, Quake, Quake 2, UT, Quake 3, UT2004, CS) but it's fun only because you're playing it with thumbsticks, not a proper mouse and keyboard. It's like playing a piano with your feet, you can never be a virtuoso.
I just can't wait til Team Fortress 2 comes out. Multiplayer will supposedly be cross-platform

I just cant wait for halo2 / Shadowrun to come to PC (Just a few more days). Then PC gamers can play VS X-Boxers, and the torrent of 13 year old boys whining to their mummys that they arent the top of their local leaderboard anymore will ensue. I have a guy at my school who actually reckons that if Counterstrike became X-Box VS PC online, he would beat an average PC gamer... Uh, how hard is it to headshot with a thumbstick again? I think itd be like fishing with a pencil... ---

Halo and halo 2 are amazingly fun to play, i love the story and the co-op is very fun It may not be the most innovative of games, but that is not necessarily a bad thing, its familiar, easy to play and entertaining.
And before anyone goes, OMG XBOX KID FANBOI HE IST RETARD, on me, i have Half life, half life 2, Cs, far cry and BF2 so i do have a basis for comparison.
Either way, PS3 is doing terribly, because it deserves to, bad choices, bad design bad press.
I have a N64, PSx, PS2, Gamecube, Wii, Xbox and 360... i can safely say PS3 is not on my list of wants, if it was ú200 cheaper.. perhaps, but still doubtful. -------------------------------------------- Stay away from my signature all of ya!!! IM WARNING YOU!!

Oh dear god Exploiting will be very hard cross-platform, as a certain bug may work vs pc users (say, landsharking) but totally bug out on an x-box (God landsharking is fun, why can't we do it in CS? ) Either way, exploits wont be a major problem, more than with a PC / mouse it is so much easier to aim than with a pair of joysticks. Sure, sure, Outthinking somebody is all good, but PC users have this mastered already, as from what I've played (about 100 hours of halo 1 / 2 on x-box live) all that people on the x-box do is spray and pray. There's no tactics about it (god I want landsharking to work in halo ) ---

Hey hey, now now, Mtthias isn't a fanboy, he's just saying that the single player and co-ops of shooters on consoles don't suck.
Which they don't. I've played the Halo campaign on the PC and it was a little repetitive but okay. But when it comes to playing a FPS multiplayer online, the playerbase on consoles are relatively immature, unskilled and selfish, the input method sucks, and the game is just too flawed and restrictive to allow room for professional competition.

Edited by: Dark Shikari on 01/05/2007 21:18:56 On the "new" topic, Halo wasn't that great a game. It was middle-of-the-road in terms of FPS.
What made it wildly popular is that it was the first good FPS for a console. It blew all the others away, most of which either sucked or were ports of PC games. And it really pushed ahead the genre of console FPSs.
Great game? I don't think so. It did well because it had no competition.

the problems with linux on the ps3 i think is related to the fact that sony refuses to give out any driver or information for and about the graphics chip wich without a driver works really slow and sucky.

My roommate just bought a PS3 last week, Resistance: Fall of Man is a pretty fun game, no complaints there at all. Also got NHL 2K7, which is just another hockey game, but hey, still fun.
I've also played a bit of 360, and my opinion is that both are great. I personally would buy a 360 over the PS3 due to the fact that there's more good titles currently, but PS3 will get their titles too, 360's been out for a year longer..
Both look great, and when the graphics get that good is there really enough difference that it ruins or makes your gaming totally awesome? You can't judge them on the next gen dvd's till there's a clear winner, a lot of people are still waiting.
As for the Wii.. it's fun, but I can't believe it's killing the competition. Zelda was an awesome game, and other multi player games are "fun" but I'm having more fun with Gears of War or Fall of Man. For now I'm holding my judgment on the wii to see what they can do, but it looks like it could be a fad... ☠-->-->--

I didn't say being angry was a bad thing
I used to love consoles a few years back. I got a PS2 as soon as I was able, and I borrowed every other console of that generation for a good long time each (friends who share ftw!). But these days I just can't get excited about any of them. My PS2 still does duty as DVD player and equipment for 4 player party games, so I can't see myself forking out ú300+ for any of the new ones any time soon.
Still, if I were to, Wii would be the only contended --------

This is missing 2 very vitally important thing; N64 and Game Cube. I own all those systems, with the exception of the Game Cube (hence why I'm looking to get a Wii) and all my N64 controllers have died from playing too much Perfect Dark and Harvest Moon. So I need a new system to play them on, as I can't afford to keep buying new controllers. It is because of those 2 games that cannot be emulated that I don't like PS3.

First of all, HD-DVD and Blu-ray use the same encryption scheme. Both have been broken, and IIRC the key you're talking about works for both.
Second, the one that can be broken will likely come out on top, not vice versa.

This information is completely wrong. Blu-Ray discs were outselling HD-DVD discs at the end of '06 (despite the fact hd-dvds were released ~2 months prior to blu-ray). The first quarter of '07, blu-ray discs have accounted for ~70% of all high-def disc sales. The format Wal-Mart decides to carry is the deciding factor on which format will come out on top? lol

The format Wal-Mart decides to carry is the deciding factor on which format will come out on top? lol

That info's legit. But Wal-Mart's role in this is that they have ordered HDDVD players from china, and are going to make HD DVD players cost 150-300 dollars, which is way more affordable than HDDVD's current price of 600+.
Please don't discount Wal-Mart's role in the retail industry. Video games have been 'censored' so they'd be able to make Wal-Mart's shelves.

Of course it is. Wal-Mart is the most important corporation in the world when it comes to retail sales.
The vast majority of the "sales" you're referring to are Casino Royale being bundled with the PS3. This was done in order to fake higher sales numbers.

no one is discounting or downplaying Wal-Marts role in the retail industry. i think you meant $600 blu-ray players? Pioneer is releasing a blu-ray drive in june for $300. the casino royale disc sales youre blabbering about dark were exclusive of ps3 bundles. The figures come from retailers. There are half a dozen sites that track the sales of each format....on a daily basis.. from retailers such as amazon.com. while the figures are cyclical, blu-ray has been in the lead. these figures have nothing to do with discs shipped or p33 bundles. the figures are discs sold.
in the end.. what does it really matter anyways? sales figures are still lightyears behind regular dvd sales. i predict the same fate as laserdisc for both formats.

Walmart haven't ordered anything yet. They are simply getting quotes for the manufacture of 2 million HD-DVD players from the companies in china. The exact quote from walmart about all this was that they would wait for the consumer to decide which format wins and then enter the market Q4 this year. I wouldn't be surprised if they are also looking for companies to make cheap BR players.
The only way for walmart to have an major effect would be to exclusively back one format. Given walmart is 40% of the dvd indusrty in the USA I don't think they will be willing to exclusively back either of the formats as this would cut in to their profits (HD-DVD covers less than 30% of DVDs, BR about 90%).

BluRay sells FAR more than HD-DVD.
The fact that 7 of the 8 biggest hollywood companies have said they support bluray over HD-DVD, as well as the majority of the ****o industry will make it pretty much impossible for HD-DVD to get anyways.

Because 53,000 is really a whole ton more than 31,000, especially when the largest retailer in America is about to start selling the latter, right?

I think PS3 looks good, though at the price its at now just isnt worth buying over the other consoles.
When God of War 3 comes out for it though, then I think I will have to give in :)

DUDE... read the damn link!! The numbers you just brought up was for one movie...
Quote: From January 1-March 31, consumers bought almost 1.2 million high-definition discs--832,530 Blu-ray units and 359,300 HD DVDs--according to Home Media Magazine. In March, consumers bought 335,980 Blu-ray Discs and 119,570 HD DVDs.

And Betamax outsold VHS initially. Guess which one won?
Sony is going to lose because no other companies want to be locked in to their format. Add on the fact that Blu-Rays are much more expensive, and you have a recipe for yet another Sony failure.
Oh, and nice cherrypicking, the correct numbers are:
Quote: Since the high-def format's inception--HD DVD launched in April 2006, while Blu-ray got rolling two months later--more than 2.14 million discs have been purchased by consumers: 1.2 million Blu-ray Discs and about 937,500 HD DVDs.

If no other company wants to be locked into Sony's format why does Blu-Ray have much more backing than HD-DVD? On another note those of you who say Blu-ray is not needed on the PS3 might want to take a look at this. GTA IV limited by 360

Now now, children. fact is we don't know who'll win the format war, yet.
About the only similar format war in recent years was the VHS / Betamax, and one incident does not count as adequate precedent. While it's true that Betamax started on top and then sank, the same is not necessarily true of this- the similarities are limited at best.
Not that I particularly care, myself. On my TV (and with my eye sight) I'd struggle to tell the difference between VHS and DVD, let alone a DVD and a "super DVD". There comes a point when audio visual quality reaches a peak, and people just don't want to pay for yet another bit of equipment for negligible improvement.
I hope they both fail miserably. Or at the very least, that this might be the last "next generation" for a little while. In any case, I plan on skipping this generation entirely and hanging on for the next one --------

Edited by: Epoch on 05/05/2007 04:59:32 and the most ridiculous thing about this "format war" (if you wanna call it the, its more of a scuffle.) is the ability exists to have one format on 1 side, the other on the other side. forgotten what the terminology is. personally, i think the format will end up like sacd & dvd-audio. im referring to movies. as a storage medium, either one is bad ass. just need to get those prices to drop. ~$10 each blank blu-ray disc.
