I'm kind of new to missions , but so far they've been too easy most of the time , Worlds Collide excepted (it's no like I'm doing them with a fresh alt , anyway) so I'm just cruising in my atron to finish them faster. Usually , it works.
I'd warp in a Rogue Drone Harassment level 1 mission , did it before and as expected the bunch of drones are no serious opposition , popping in no time. I spend some time looting them on a change and 3 strange ones show up in the distance. 2 Marauder Alvior and 1 Strain Raider Alvi. I charge at them without a second thought , then I see my life bars drop in moments. So in panic I warp out in structure , leaving my trusty hobgoblin behind
Switching to the bane of L1s , my tristan (still pvp fitted ) and coming back for some retribution. Approaching again , slower but confident in my superior tanking and ganking power. Taking some shots , hey were did my shields go ?
Quote: Marauder Alvior strikes you perfectly, wrecking for 205.2 damage.
Woops , I barely have the time to react and activate the small rep II. The strain raider was almost dead and pops soon enough , but my armor keeps going down at an alarming rate. Again warping in structure , after scooping my drone this time...
Round 3 , going for the marauders this time , trying to increase my transversal but to no avail - they keep inflicting nasty damage. Pounding the first while going down myself - some missed shots giving me some time to breathe. While engaging the last one , I notice it still dishes more damage than my optimized armor tank could take
I'm impressed. I never expected my ship's existence to be threatened in such a basic level 1 mission - a terrific experience combined with its classy action music. Is it the kind of changes that happened to missions in general ? I wouldn't mind doing more if they were all so exciting yet I remember this kind of challenge was experimented on exploration sites a while ago. Yay for CCP

I also like the challenge and having to figure out a good setup and strategy for a specific mission. When I finnaly found a way, it's a great feeling. |

a 200 damage shot in a level 1?!?!?!!? wtf is with that. thats just stupid, how is a rookie meant to cope with something like that. i still think worlds collide is harsh enough on new people, i got an agent with my alt and first mission was WC. just kinda thought to myself, wow if i didnt know what i was doing...

Rookies should learn the art of sniping. In most cases a destroyer can tank that damage with decent skills, but with rails, arties or beams then you should be able to take them down. --- Currently flying a PvE geared Crusader and Prophecy |

Oh yeah , it was a 20km shot as well , those rogue drones used small arty...
Maybe it was due to the mission taking place in lowsec. I was pleasantly surprised that even L1s have a random challenge element.
While I remember struggling with WC in my newbie days , the mere mention of it in local would cause a few charitable souls to offer their help. After all , newbies don't have much to lose being wrecked by surprise boss rats

Alvior is battlecruiser sized drone. Just web him and orbit at 5km - he wont hit you at all.

Well, I am a noob and I got this mission couple of days ago (it was in 0.9 so security level doesn't matter). I agree with Will Smithx that it's way too difficult. I tried about 10 times with every possible fit I could get with my skills and all I could do is to scratch a shield of one of the drones before warping away with serious structure damage. I've read this post and tried Blackfire's advice (webbing and orbiting) but the drone was still able to hit me with 80dmg per shot! I spent 2 or 3 days reading and learning shield tanking and armour tanking and still nothing. It's a bit frustrating if you don't get any reward for such an effort.
Finally I asked for help on a local channel and one guy with BS was kind enough to go with me and he killed all the drones in couple of seconds.
I am a bit dissapointed because it seems I can't even finish every lvl 1 mission and it is a bit discouraging. Stakhanov, can you tell me what fitting you used for your Tristan (you did it on Tristan, right?).
I like challenges, I think I would manage to win agains two such drones, but not three!!!
In my opinion this mission should be tweaked a bit. Otherwise the fun and excitement will be replaced by frustration.

IMO nothing in lvl 1 missions should do over 50 raw damage. These are clearly doing 100 or more raw, serious overkill.
Maybe if there was just one of those with no support it could be handled. Really don't see a rookie taking this on especially with the range they have.
200 is HUGE damage, was fighting something in my bs that did that into my tank, got me pretty nervous since I noticed the drop in my odd 11k armor. Keep in mind frigs have about 300 of shield and armor on average.

Got this a couple times in my arty thrasher. Just flew straight away and killed em off. And they only spawn if you get too close to the roid with the buildings on it. The second time I tried it, I killed off all the other stuff and waited, nothing. When I got closer to the thing to loot some of them, those three things spawned.

You're right about the range. I tried to overcome it with an afterburner. I had the best results with one stassis webifier, medium shield extender and 1MN afterburner (all tech 1 on Tristan - with my skills I couldn't really put anything else). I activated burner as soon as they locked me and tried to get within 10k from the worst one. I webbed it and orbitted on 5km. But at this stage my armor was usually on 50% and the other two drones were quite powerfull as well. I only had couple of shots before taking structure hits.
I never had a chance to inflict armour damage on any of them. As I said, discouraging.

I had this mission the other day. I run level 1s in a passive shield tanked rifter than can litterally ignore the dammage output on most l1 missions. After several warpouts I finally came back in my destroyer. There are probably several solutions to this mission, but mine was to up dammage output to the point that I could pop a drone and leave while still in shield, rinse and repeat.
Having played the game some time ago, and returned with a new account just recently, it does seem that some missions are harder, which is kind of nice. Level 1's used to be no challenge at all, and level 2's were the same with any half decent combat cruiser. Its nice to have to think now and then to beat a stage and get your reward.

I think it was a small rep II , capacitor power relay , damage control (no specific hardener) with AB on all the time , and webbing the rats in range. High armor tanking & core skills. While the 1km/s atron dodged a good part of the deadly shots , the tristan is very poor at speedtanking and took most of them.
It's just pure gank action at that point. You have to deal as much damage as possible on 1 rat before warping out. Fit an armor plate if you can , to have more time to shoot.

Im a noob training for Interceptor, until then I use my Caracal on lvl 1 missions. It has 4425 sheilds so I can tank no problem, until I unlock lvl 2 missiosn anyway. When I did worlds Collide ina frig I used a merlin with this setup
Ion Blaster x2 Rocket launcher x2 Medium subordinate screen stabaliser small shield booster 1MN After burner (After a skills) Micro Aux Power Cores x2

Was it the first room? That's ware it happened to me.
I had this happen on m alt, there lvl 3 drones. They popped my first ship since I was not paying attention. Went back and tried to pop them, but at 70 to 200 DPS I could not get close enough, and in my case there were 3 of them.
I wound up petitioning it and getting a GM to take a look, he wound up killing the mission since it was bugged.

Heh. My first mission back in game after a leave of absence was this one, second was Worlds Collide. I didn't know going Blood side was unwise at that point...it was pretty ugly. I was whining in rookie about how hard the L1's were ... then promptly spent the next three days getting the monotonously easy missions that make up the rest of the level.
I found this mission doable in a Tristan, easy as pie in a Destroyer, and middle-ground in a poorly skilled Merlin on my industry alt.
But a single whack for 200? I don't think I've seen that happen. That's nearly terminal on a frigate.

Edited by: Klebzellok on 14/05/2007 12:47:59 Lost a rifter to this one.
I just came back from being inactive for a few months. So I hop into my passive tanked Rifter with 2000 shield (one med and one small extender, both t2) and 3x150mm scouts. I can do a lot of level 2s in this, and frigs in level 1s are usually done by aggroing everything, then stopping and insta-popping them one by one with this setup.
I got distracted for a few secs while I was engaging them and I was already into armor when I saw what was going on. I fit a new Rifter (same setup as the last) and come back and I could take them, but I can't tank then indefinately.

I had the same, was not doing very good then all of a sudden I get hit for 200 :S -> rifter gone.
Worlds collide isn't hard. Just kill everything till you get some resistance (after a few groups in the second room) then go straight to the third (last) room. Easy.

Yeah, I had some problems with a lvl1 mission yesterday myself. I'm using kestrels (note the plural) with 4 launchers and shield extenders/hardeners, depending on the situation.
With 700 shield, they blew me up just when I got into firing range at 17km. One salvo of 1 EM and 3 kinetic missiles (with frigates IV) did about 2 pixels of damage to their shield. I bought a new kestrel to try a resistance build, but same story. I bought another one with 2 extenders and an active hardener, thinking I could jet past and pick up my stuff from my previous failed attempts. I died while aligning to warp.
I aborted the mission and from then on he's just been giving me flies and origami drones to shoot down. Most of it goes down in 1 or 2 light missiles.

In that situation, I would have turned tail, flown straight away from them, used speed tanking to mitigate some of the damage, and sniped them with my seven gun Cormorant. Wicked beast, and a lovely sniper with Tungsten rounds.
This is my sig, there are many others just like it. With me, my sig is worthless. Without (or with even) my sig, I am worthless... |

Ya I remember this mission, went out in my Kestrel and blew the crap out of the lesser drones, then the new ones popped up so I positioned myself (At the time had about a 27 km range on my light missiles) and started firing away. Needless to say, the drones had a higher top speed than my frigate, but usually it doesn't matter as 7km worth of chasing is enough to blow away any drone. Not these guys, they caught up fast and starting ripping me to shreds. Warped out, repaired, restocked, came back and found out they'd been waiting, warped in within 5 km of them, didn't even get the chance to warp back out. Switched over to my Merlin (after flying back to Jita in a pod...) and by time I got back the drones had backed off the insertion point. Managed to railgun/missile the rest of them down while afterburning away from them. Then scooped up the various remains (my poor kestrel included) and vowed never again to underestimate the power of small drones with big guns...

Edited by: Samagaun on 21/05/2007 09:00:21 I got the mission in the end. Used a Vampire on them to get extra energy from their capacitors. Then, as I couldn't afford Shield upgrades, I used thermal and kinetic (magnetic) armor resistance (both 30%) together with an armor repairer. And an afterburner to get them in range of my 3 '200mm Autocannon I's fast enough.
I was able to take them out one by one then. (Warping out after one kill)
I like these challenges more then going up against 10 very low threat targets and that you just can't keep up targeting them.

Edited by: Ares Lightfeather on 21/05/2007 15:46:36 I soloed easily with this build : - the gallente destroyer, - 3 cargo hull things (the one that increase speed), - iron ammo, - 3 railguns.
Strategy consist in moving away of them as fast as possible. The optimal range of railguns with this setup is 30 or something, speed slightly over 600 with an afterburner -> it means they will not, ever, get in range. It's a long but easy win. I'm pretty sure that a standard frigate could to it too, but the extra range from the destroyer was a big help.
Mission is a little long to finish, but it's not that hard to kill them all.

Yes this mission caught me off guard also and the first time I went through 3 different frigs. Since my rails are pathetically weak the merlin was a bad choice for me but I've got it down with my kestrel now. I'm loaded with 4 malkuth launchers. One tech 2 shield regen, 1 invuln barrier, and 1 tech 2 shield extender. Low slots carry an overdrive and a system diagnostic.
When the drones come in I stay at 25km of the fastest one which is actually only about half the speed of my kest. I then target the other 2 which are slowly falling behind and launch everything I have at a single target at a time. When my shields get down a quarter of the way I turn on the shield recharge until the capacitor is dead and after that I turn on every time after I get a bar of capacitor back. Haven't lost a ship to this mission since I went with this setup and tactic.
As for WC when I warp into the second zone I just attack what I can while I get to the jump gate. I can usually knock out the destroyers and command ship but if I stick around all that stuff just pummels my ship like nothing.
