I recently purchased a maelstrom, which i will be using in level 4 missions, and i was wondering which drones to put into it.
The maelstrom will be a primairily a long range fighter, so the drones priority is defending me from webbers and scramblers (being webbed in a setup that requires range hurts).
I was wondering wether to put 5 lights and 3 heavies (lights pop the scramblers, then i send out heavies to do the rest), or 5 mediums and two heavies (pretty much the same), or even 10 mediums, in case i lose some.
which gives the best combination of safety and time to kill the scramblers?

I would say mix the lights and mediums. You want this as point defense so I would go with that philosophy entirely. Let your big guns handle the big targets. If that solution is not your cup of tea then I would say go with the lights / heavies.

That's what I would go with personally. Give it a try on some corp mates and see how it works out.
I am in the process of leaving my primary weapon system (Just shy of 8 million in gunnery devoted to projectiles before I switch off) to start spreading out to drones and then finally to missiles. Seeing as I need all three to truly be effective as a minmatar. I am getting into drones primarily to tackle the problem you described of point defense. I will be using lights and mediums at first.
Maybe heavies if you were in a gang and there were other ships better equipped to handle the smaller ships.

I'm going with 5 medium tech II drones, for point defense. Adding 2 heavy tech II ones, to get some extra "oompfh", when I'm fighting BCs and battleships.

i'd say 5x t2 small ones and 3x Sentry drones

I always have 5 rat specific T2 Lights for tackling frigs and inty's. Top up with meds and heavies to suit.
If you know you will only be taking heat once you are at artie optimal...you can use the guns to pop the frigs anyways so i suggest using a mix of med and heavies in this case.

I use like 7 mediums and 6 light drones, just in case a ship pops one of my drones, I'll always have 1 to take it's place and so don't lose any drone DPS.
