Do you own a smartphone? Are you happy with it?
The one thing I've noticed is that I miss actual keys. I hate pressing the screen just to dial, pick up or hang-up.
Second, the screen is always smudged (and not becuase Im always picking my nose) so I'm constantly wiping it down.
Third, battery life is laughable. - |

I hated my "smart"phone for the same reasons you listed, mainly because of the laughable battery life and poor "feel" due to touchscreen. So I bought a "dumb"phone: Nokia C2-01. I can press buttons with it, call, send text messages, check my e-mail and document police brutality (the only valid use for the camera in cellphones imo). I am content. I've been using a free model for years, but I'm looking to move up.
I didn't at first because I felt I had no need for apps, but one day my work is going to want to give me e-mail when I'm away, I see it coming... and I've started to hear about apps I'd like. I've also considered a camera. Maybe a sign of getting older but I never cared for them until recently I felt I wanted one. |

Only prob with my Smartphone is its laughably out of date =( need an upgrade.
I do miss QWERTY slide out keyboard on my old dumb phone, there are a good few smartphones with them just none of the ones that interest me. Batt life is fine though, seems pretty decent in most smartphones tbh. |

Have/had a first gen Droid. Great phone and all that, until it leaped off a three foot cabinet at work and fell screen first onto the concrete floor.
I could of sworn I heard it say "FREEDOM" just as it hit the floor.
Oh well, Motorola has a Droid 3 with slide out keyboard and my cell phone provider carries it. Joy. Surrender is still your slightly less painful option. |

My 3gs worked awesome until it went for a swim. Aside from the battery (which is 9 bucks to switch out on your own including the kit...but 90 from apple) I didn't care to upgrade and was going to keep it until it worked no more.
Now the 4g... or maybe it's IOS 5 it's buggy apps fail to work or drop all the time, things just dont work quite the same...

The HTC G2 is pretty spiffy. Touchscreen is very responsive and has big number buttons when dialing manually. It also has a slide out QWERTY keyboard which works well even with my big hands for composing email and typing in web urls.
I don't really have a problem with smudges even with a toddler who likes to hog the phone. (SmartPhone + WiFi/G4 + Elmo/Sesame Street youtube clips.)
Battery life is okay. It lasts about a day with heavy use, several days with low/average use. If you only turn on the WiFi/data as you need it, you get a noticeable improvement in battery life.
You can tell me what is and isn't true when you pry the tinfoil from my cold, lifeless head.

Blackberry user here (supplied by work, so its Enterprise-locked). It does what I want it to do (and helped me in an unusual way last weekend), so I can't complain too much.
My main complaint about these new phones is not the battery life (you can get extended batteries for anything), but the size and shape. They go so far away from the idea of a 'phone' that trying to use it as such (without a headset or Speakerphone mode) is difficult at best. Some of us still communicate by voice, Pfft.
I may have come here from Myst Online, but that does not make me any less bloodthirsty than the average Eve player.
Just more subtle.

I have a BlackBerry bold and I love it, full keyboard and a touch screen gives the best of both worlds. Its reasonably powerful to and can handle 720p videos.
I am not sure if I will get a Torch when my contracts up though, not until I try one in store or something. |

I nearly got a cha-cha just so I had proper buttons but went with a desire s for more screen space. Perfectly happy with it and accept the shortfalls of the tech at this time. Read up beforehand so no nasty surprises.
Battery life is easily the worst feature but there are thinks you can do to extend it. The other thing I sometimes miss is being able to text without looking at the phone but I can live with that.
Most importantly Aura (evemon with basic EFT and market transaction info) makes it well worth having over a basic phone. When I go camping ill still take my old phone simply because of the battery life but for most times you can keep it charged between work and home. They go so far away from the idea of a 'phone' that trying to use it as such (without a headset or Speakerphone mode) is difficult at best. Some of us still communicate by voice, Pfft. I always hated talking on the phone - ANY phone, even the old style rotary dial landline phones, damn the cords to heck - for anything longer than a handful of minutes. Why ? Many reasons, actually. Because you have to hold it up to your ear, so your hand gets tired eventually even if you don't need it, and because you usually end up needing it (the hand, that is). And because holding a slab of something initially cold(er) to your ear (something that eventually turns hot and/or sweaty) is not exactly my idea of enjoyable. Oh, and the sound quality is not exactly all that great either, especially with the tiniest bit of external noise thrown into the mix.
Enter a good quality Bluetooth headset, and pretty much all of the above problems I had just... evaporate. That also includes the weird form factor of some of today's "smart phones" (which is actually not bothering me all that much). And the wireless headset battery life is usually well in excess of that of the phone anyway, so plugging in two devices instead of one once in a while should not be that much of a problem. http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Contributor_name:Akita_T#Contributions_link_collection |

I hate bluetooth.
I don't care how nice it is, I can't get used to a world where people around me suddenly start talking out loud.
All those stupid moments like thinking they're talking to you, wondering if there's another person you don't see, hearing a change in their voice and thinking they're now talking to you but someone else was put on the phone on the other end, or even having someone with a blue tooth talk to you but thinking they're on the phone.

Got myself a Samsung Galaxy S2 a few months ago. Lovely phone, really. The only thing that has annoyed me slightly is the screen size. It's a tiny bit too big to reach the outer corners with my thumb comfortably, but it's rarely a problem at all.
Also, compared to my prior smartphone; the HTC Hero, the Galaxy is a little too "smooth" on the outside for me. The Hero had some plastic/rubber kind of coating. I could let it rest almost vertically in my hand without it falling down. Also rarely a problem though. Any cheap casing can fix that if it's a problem for you.
Quite happy with my purchase, in other words. I wanted something that could do most of what phones do today comfortably, and I definitely got that. |

Had the Samsung intercept on virgin mobile. 25 bucks (at the time) it included unlimited texts and internet which usually didn't work. The phone is slow and lags with just texts.
I now have the huawei ascend 2. On the cricket network in California. 55/month. internet is pretty much crap. My gf has the iPhone on the at@t network. Her internet is fast but she pays twice as much as I do too though. |

you can get a waterproof case for it too for the guy who wanted to swim with his smartphone:), my friend has one and it seems to work fine.
@OP if you upgraded to a new 4g phone and the battery is crap, maybe turn the 4g off and use 3g instead to save batery power?

I'm sure the Samsung Galaxy S II is wonderful and better in many ways. . . .and yet, all smartphones still use iphone as the bechmark for competition. other phones may beat it on some features (because they have to in order to sell) but it is the solid benchmark, a balanced design that is always great, so for a general consumer at some point, why fight it?:) also there's more apps and more variety of third party add ons available if you like that stuff.

If i'm not wrong, then iOS only have some few ten thousand more annps than Android Market now. So i wouldn't just favour AppStore over Android Market for that now.
