Well, fellow Eve goers, I just got two free passes to WoW. I've always avoided the game because it seemed rather...generic to me, but I've been wondering if I should take this free two weeks or so of gameplay to give it a go. I doubt it will take away from my Eve time to much really. However, on the flip side, for a mere 16 bucks I can buy and try out Final Fantasy Online for one month. I'm in an mmorpg bind. So, to any one who has played these MMOs, how do they compare to Eve, and are they wroth a try? If you've played both, which one should I try? Both maybe?

Since they are free, try them... you might like one of them. I did once, but not for very long personally. That being said, tons of people like WoW for some reason. :)

For two weeks, yeah, WoW is fun for that stretch of time. Actually, if you pace yourself, you can get a good few months out of WoW until you hit 60 on your lead toon and it all binds down into a grind for epix.
This is my sig, there are many others just like it. With me, my sig is worthless. Without (or with even) my sig, I am worthless... |

Edited by: Blind Man on 04/05/2007 19:19:44 I did play WoW for about three months total, 1 month to about ~35 then i got bored, resubbed and played for 2 months. hit 70 and got bored within 3 weeks. I only really played because i was bored of eve otherwise i never would have wasted 453 hours playing it

Every game is what you make of it. I played WoW for about 8 days (I hit the trial account limit of level 20) and I didn't quest at all. I tried one, I had to run around in the woods killing something and retrieving their pelts or whatever. I loudly said '**** this' and played the game I wanted to play. I visited all but four of the regions in the landmass I was on, using my skills as a Rogue to sneak about and hide from the scarier monsters. Where I felt I could, I set up and ambushed monsters of up to 5 levels higher than me, and although it took a few goes, when I killed them I gained about half a levels XP from that one kill, plus the XP you get on discovering new things is quite high if those things are meant to be found by Level 40+ players.
But then I hit the Level 20 wall and it all seemed kinda pointless from there. ---

I've heard that FF Online isn't a casual game like EDve can be. You wont have any fun with it unless you're willing to play 5 hours a day. However, from the vids i've seen on youtube, it does look fun,a nd 16 bucks isn't much. Thats two bucks more then Eve's subscription, and i'll be both buying the disk and getting a month of gameplay.
I'll try WoW, but the free Pass's say I need a friend with a game disk and I need to enter the pass code as the cd key. Of course, I wont torrent it....thats illegal....and stuff. Heh....yeah.

Played WoW for almost 2 years. Still have the account...mess with it now and again.
As has been said...it's what you make of it. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world for a long time. And it was.
I just got a little burnt after being max level for so long. Now I've signed on to EvE for 6 months. Hopefully Age of Conan will be out by then.

I play both.
WoW has the better PvE; EVE has the better PvP. One has sci-fi, the other has fantasy. Both are full of neat things to discover.
And should I at some point in the future stop liking one of the two, I can still look back on the time I spent playing and say, it was fun while it lasted. I do not understand people who can play a game for an extended period of time and then, when they get bored of it, claim that it sucked all along... that's like lying to yourself. In my opinion, you can decide whether your like it or not in the first two weeks of playing. Even EVE, thanks to the high skillpoint new character generation that spits you out into the world almost fully PvP ready.

I played WoW for a little over 2.5 years (beta til april of 06). In that time I logged 153 days of playtime on 1 character, 70 on another, and about 60 between another 3. For the first 2 years, I loved the game. It was great, playing alongside people I had known since I started playing MMO's, back in the Everquest Era (I played EQ for 4.5 years, and logged nearly 700 days /played between 2 characters).
There is more then enough to do to keep you occupied as you level. There is a backstory to the questing as you play through, if you take the time to read the quest text and learn the backstory of the area and the game world, it can be quite fun. Aside from that, your first several raids are kind of cool. Unfortunately it all goes downhill from there, as people get upset at lack of "uber gear" or "this person got what I wanted" and the somewhat immature attitude of servers (don't play on Blackhand, for the love of god).
All in all, I loved the game. Until my friends all stopped playing on my server, and then I hated it. Then I found EVE. And now I love my game again. - - -

A friend of mine asked me to play WoW recently because he's sick of eve... I had a trial a while back and he paid to have my character moved to the server he's started playing on. Its not bad... the PVP at low levels sucks due to "twinks" but its still a fair bit of fun.
You really need to make friends to enjoy wow... its a good way to spend time if you're talking on TS while playing.
The only thing that sucks is the lack of risk in PVP... it doesnt have the thrill of eve. But at least blizzard are trying to encourage pvp by making the new 1 v 1 2v2 3v3 and 5v5 battles as well as cross server battles.
I dont think wow is worth leaving eve over but if you want to skill train and ride out the current ****ness then wow's not a bad choice.

Wow im amazed how mature the comments have been out of people here! I can just imagine how people in WOW would react if they asked about another game. Hell I have friend who play wow and go crazy at people who say wow isnt the best game ever (and these people are adults?).
Ive been playing WOW for about 5 months and I think like everyone says, they are very different games. Nothing beats the complexity and matureness of Eve Online. However, WOW lets you start playing immediately at anytime you want and just have fun. I think you can list a lot of characteristics of the games like so:
Eve: Complex, mature, formulaic, one really invests in the corporations and things you own and you always have a lot to loose. It's economy is systematic and complex as well. Knowledge in the game is far from widespread which means creativity counts for a lot. One can have goals and ambition in this game. However, as I said, Eve doesn't let you jump into combat and have fun immediately.
World of Warcraft: Very simple, childish at points (god knows the player base is), guilds are very loose and no one has much loyalty to eachother. Economy is far less mature if it even exists. However, you can quickly jump into combat and play for any amount of time one wants. You're also more engaged in what you do on a battle by battle basis. Knowledge is very widespread, one can basically reach your maximum level just by looking at a guide and everything in this game has been detailed out for people. More interesting locations and lots of different types of people to fight. You have little to lose in combat. You're less likely to get bored of repetition in WOW then in Eve or at least have it come on later then it does in Eve.
A lot of these things seem like positives for people but might be negatives for others. I know people who love the idea of not being able to lose anything in battle. I personally hate the idea. The economy in Eve can be called frusterating but elegant at the same time. It's reeeeeally all about the person playing.

Don't waste your time with FFXI. That game is dying a slow and horrible death. The lvling system is teh suck, it is designed to have a balanced party of 6 to kill any mob that will give you exp, thats mean you'll spend HOURS looking for a party just to lvl up. The combat system is boring, rinse and repeat the same fight against the same mob for hours to gain half a lvl. Then when you get a few lvls and move on to a different "camp" you get to fight the same mob for the next few lvls with different stats not even a new skin . The gameplay/graphics are very limited due to the crossplatform servers, they cater to the lowest common denominator (playstation 2).
WoW can be fun, it is the polar opposite of EvE, super simple and very easy. My theroy as to why WoW is so popular is the lack of challenge, everyone likes to win. Either way I have played both games, and from experience I would wager that you would be back to eve shortly after trying either one. If you want a occasional break from eve try Guild wars, it has no monthly fee and can be pretty fun.

Once upon a time you could just play horde and avoid the retards.. now its not so easy..
Another game i had a cra.ck(wtf i cant say cra.ck?) at is The Matrix Online... its come a long long way since beta and now looks damn good. The pvp is absolutely pathetic though. No risk. No reward. No point.
It is a game for pve'ers and roleplayers, the story is very active.. for instance before i quit recently an NPC character who controlled the weather was kidnapped by another faction... the sky went pink... and a week later it was crimson, everything was bathed in crimson light in the build up to the huge battle to save said NPC... it is very cool and the storyline evolves in game.
Events in eve follow bob around mysteriously.. but in MxO they seem to be pretty open to everyone.
City of villains.. i should mention that... pretty good game but again, the PVP didnt really hold me... very worthwhile if you wanna try something where teamwork and such is encouraged.
Lets just hope that the new MMO that CCP and whitewolf are working on will be perfect... vampire bloodlines online anyone?
Oh.. also.. World Of Starcraft is coming.. be afraid.. be very afraid

Take it back. For the love of God take it back. I wanted Starcraft 2 since I first played Starcraft 1 haha. If they make it into a 'world of' game.... oh my god, end of the West as we know it...

There there buddy... I know
Maybe they'd have the brains to give it some serious pvp though... but I smell a wow port.
I havent really seen any serious information on it yet, can anyone provide linkage?

This is made by Funcom just so you know. Same people who brought us Anarchy Online., which I left after 2 years for Eve. Do not, repeat, do NOT get your hopes up.

Just wanted to say that I have had a WoW account for at least 2 years (still active, but only because I can't get a refund for the prepaid months)... If u like PVE and magic, little kids and pretty elves, you can be entertained. But if you enjoy pvp at all... don't waste your time. Just don't play that game if you expect to have any kind of enjoyable experience or the maturity level I've come to enjoy of the Eve community. Please take my word for it lol.

Without re-hashing to you all the bad reasons to play WoW, and there a few, WoW is a game best spent playing with friends. Running around doing things as part of a group. Otherwise things get repetative, less funny, less challenging and repetative, and repetative etc... until you reach your level limit and then create a new toon and then do it all again a.k.a. repetative. Anyways, play with other people, join up with some people and you'll have fun 90% guarenteed. * * * http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euZ0j7vtKEQ
