Just thinking, one of the big problem for CCP is the amount of money going into the system compared to the comparativly small amount going out, why not replace NPC insurence with player insurence, im sure it could be worked into the contract system, even if it would take some time to get onto its feet (corps shutting down and running off with insurence money).
You could also couple it into ship losses (though there'd have to be some way of viewing someones unedited ship losses for insurence purposes).
What do people think?

How exactly does the insuring corp make money with this idea?
Player buys a Geddon. Insures it. Suicides some macros. The insuring corp is 45mil out of pocket. ---

I do not think that would work.
People lose way too many ships for someone to actually make a profit on insurance.
My insurance would so high it would be same as buying a full price ship

I don't trust 90% of EVE players to make trades without trying to bore my sphincter sans vaseline, what makes you think I'm going to trust a corporation to underwrite my ship?
Way too easy to play State Farm, write up the policy, then find every way under the sun to get out of having to pay up.
This is my sig, there are many others just like it. With me, my sig is worthless. Without (or with even) my sig, I am worthless... |

Real world insurance companies rely on investments to cover insurance payouts. As a policyholder I used to get small checks from State Farm in years when they made more money than expected.
Although there ARE investment opportunities in Eve, there aren't nearly enough to support ship insurance run through player hands. As well, it would require the same level of professional investment for in-game insurance companies as normal insurance companies put into it. You need risk adjusters to set premiums depending on where the ship is used most, people to handle sales, payments (and tracking payments), claims processing, and access to server-side data to corroborate claims. This is not going happen. No player run corporation is going to be able to devote this kind of time to provide insurance to the player base. And CCP will not give the kind of access needed to run a "real" insurance business.
Even if this were to all magically come together, who would qualify for it? There would be all sorts of riders on any contract, such as not covering lowsec systems, acts of war, military contracts, etc. Because insurance businesses make a profit by not insuring risky behaviors. That would exclude just about all activities in Eve from coverage.
So I don't see any way for players to run an insurance business. It's too complicated, there aren't enough investment opportunities to provide the amount of revenue required to cover losses, and limits on insurance contracts to overcome the lack of investment income would make coverage meaningless.

Fair enough, just seems a waste that so many things are NPC provided, if not insurence Im sure there are other NPC services that could be replaced, shall take more thinking though it seems.

Think of it like welfare, its another system that cannot break even or make money, hence is a charity and can't be provided by the private sector without subsidy.
EvE is hard on ships, the only way to make PC driven insurance work is to remove all PvP activities from being allowed insurance, all mission activities, all concord kills and all lowsec/0.0 activities. Partaking in any of those is a known dangerous activity and any insurance company is within their rights to disallow payment because you willingly were doing things to get your ship blown up.
Basically the only ships that would be allowed insurance payments would be .9-1.0 mining barges (no NPC rats in those areas) and haulers that stayed in .5 or above space AND didn't stray from the stations and gates. And both of those examples can't be in wardecc'd corporations or their insurance would be forfeit. <-----------> Keiron: Quote on PvE/PvP

If anything, I'd be for removing insurance altogether. I remember my first corp in Eve didn't even realize insurance was available. And this was a corporation with a lot of beta testers in it. I think it was about two weeks into release when someone docked at a Pend Insurance station out of curiosity and saw the option. So while insurance is nice and I make use of it since it is there, I don't consider it essential to the game.
If it is such a headache, just take it out altogether.

If you allow players to do insurance they will find a way to scam people.
Horrible Idea.
Unless of course you find a way to scam people, then its a great idea, but I am against it because its a horrible idea.
