After many years of shying away from non windows OS's I have decided to give Ubuntu a go and see what it can offer me. I have got it installed and it seems to have detected all my hardware without any problems. What I am now looking for is a website or forum which I can read through to teach me the basics of using Ubuntu so that I can evaluate it fully, any of you Linux experts out there know of such a guide?

Get a Knoppix Live CD, then just pop it into the drive and go, doesnt even use the hard drive at all so you can do whatever you want without fear of melting your machine, its a good way to learn about Linux in a safe enviroment. ------------- Hadean Drive Yards The EvE inflation, 80 Macro miners, 1.5b isk/day |

It automatically does that if you make a separate partition. The installer has a nice little partition program built into it to resize your current partition.
Someone already posted a guide so I figure describing it in detail would be silly.

Tbh its pretty easy to install (once you work out you need to reorder the boot sequence so cd is before hdd, that way the damn thing actually starts GAH).
Btw it wouldnt recognise my USB (microsoft lol) mouse at install so needed a ps2 converter.
Currently stuck on getting my wireless running, card i have isnt supported, so trying to compile my own driver as a linux newbie. Aint going too great.
ive done cd ~/Desktop/Folderpath
Compiled the source even though it came up with a couple of errors during, but when i do:
sudo mkdir /etc/Wireless/RT61STA/ as instructed bash comes out with 'mkdir cannot create directory XXXXXXXXX no such file or directory'
Any ideas?

You sure /etc/Wireless is a directory, or /etc/Wireless/RT61STA isn't already a file in the directory? You can't create a directory with the same name as a file IIRC.

I know /etc exists in the same place as bin folder and stuff, but /etc/Wireless definately doesnt exist.
I've tried creating one manually, or creating on the desktop and copying it in, however it doesnt let you do it.
or is there something before /etc i should be using? It just seems a ridiculous error message to say i cant create a directory because its not already there

Wow that dual booting guide is scary. I think for now, I'll stick with windows and not tinker with partitions and command lines I know nothing about --------------------------------------------------------------------

It takes about 5 minutes of clicking through a simple wizard
There are no command-lines required. I don't know what the guide is thinking, but the installer guides you right through it.

Edited by: Dark Shikari on 08/05/2007 10:03:05 OK, I'll elaborate a bit. What you have to do:
1. When it asks you to choose a partition, choose the custom option or whatever. Eventually you'll get to the part where it opens the graphical partition manager, gparted. 2. Resize your NTFS drive to fit the partitions in step 3. 3. Add two new partitions. One should be ReiserFS or EXT3 formatted and 10-20GB, and the other should be 2GB or so and "Linux Swap" formatted. This should be pretty intuitive. 4. When it asks you what drives to use, select the larger drive you just made as "/" and the smaller one will automatically be selected as the swap drive. You're done!
