X3: Reunion. Combat is more twitch based/space shooter type stuff, but you can build your own stations and have your own automated fleet of traders/combat ships. Ships range from fighters to freighters and carriers/destroyers

Any single player game is going to be a totally different creature than an MMO. They are apples and oranges really.
Maybe some combination of Masters of Orion 2 and I-War. Two totally different games but between them sorta cover some of the bases EVE hits. But honsetly that is quite a stretch.

Only one of my favorite games of all time, I give to you: Escape Velocity.
http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/strategy.html
Very similar to concept of Eve-Online:
Quote:
Escape Velocity spans a number of genres, combining elements of classic "trading" games, arcade space shoot-outs, and strategy simulations. Whether you choose to build a trading empire, aid the Rebellion in a civil war, or strike out on your own as a ruthless pirate, Escape Velocity provides a multitude of options for the game connoisseur. This open-ended gameplay allows each player to chart their own course as they play; there's no "right" way to play Escape Velocity, as long as you have fun! Numerous sub-plots fill Escape Velocity's world; your choices affect the story's development, guaranteeing that each game will be different from the last. You'll have the opportunity to infiltrate hostile military bases, ferry emergency supplies to distant star systems, rescue passengers from stranded cruise ships, stop alien invaders, and more. In addition, Escape Velocity sports an open game engine. Future scenario designers will be able to create their own worlds for other players to explore...
3 Escape Velocity games out there. It's all 2D and the games are 5-10 years old. But I had immense fun playing them, they are shareware so if you like it, buy a license for like $15-20. I even made a mission pack or two for the game, very fun.
I thought X3 had a lot of potential, but it has such a steep learning curve and the interface is crazy so I never got into it. Seems fun though.

Thank you all for your opinions and suggestions, I know MMO and SPG are two vastly different genres, but I knew there had to be something similar out there.

Well, they do say themselves that their initial goal was to create a ELITE MMO, and well, I think theyre still working on that path.

You got the main thrust of it... Elite, Privateer and Master or Orion... but you missed Counterstrike to explain all those gankers in Jita.

If you played Elite then most likly the MMO Jupmgate (Netdevil) too. Fantastic space pvp and trading game with an excellent flight model. However unlike CCP the developers were very slow to add contect etc and with the advent of Earth and Beyond and then the massive Eve Online Beta it died. Jumpgate had a US and EU server which in its prime was hitting 500 online, not bad considering it has about 50 systems compared to the new Eve galaxy of 5000! Both games are not a direct comparison but based on similiar concepts.
Dam I miss that game, then I get in my Navy Mega and say Jumpgate who?

By MMO due you mean 'Persistent World'? As most good 'so-called' single-player games these days have significant and most often *primary* Multiplayer aspects. It's just that the Multiplayer aspect isn't 'Persistent'.
A lot of Eve players (or MMO players in general) appear, at least from comments on Eve's forums, not to grasp the multiplayer aspect of gaming (other than MMOs).
Whatever the case, there are a number of non-MMO games which have a similar order of complexity and depth as Eve, though only a few carry this over into a multiplayer aspect. These will be Turn-Based-Strategy games and to a lesser degree Real-Time-Strategy. Of course, RTS games will be greater on the multiplayer aspect, while TBS games will be greater on the depth/complexity.
All that said, here are my reccommendations:
1) Homeworld: This is a single-player game with a full multiplayer function. It doesn't have any 'economy' such as Eve, but you do need money to buy ships and stuff. Homeworld has "mining" which is quite similar to Eve; it has a variety of ships with varied functions, but unlike Eve, fleets of ships are controlled by a single player.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeworld Homeworld - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Homeworld has a fully THREE DIMENSIONAL world. For this reason the interface can be difficult for some people as you must navigate (fly) your ships in three dimensions. This is a skill that must be mastered to be *good* at the game.
This is different than Eve, as Eve only *simulates* a 3D environment, where navigation is simply 'point and click'. Another difference is that Eve requires *simulated* skill, while Homeworld, indeed, requires a player to acquire *true* skill thru trial, error and real-time effort.
The last version, Homeworld 2, has a feature talked about by the Eve's developers as being planned for later versions of Eve. That is that specific parts of a ship can be targeted and destroyed. In Homeworld 2, you can target a ship's engines and knock them out rendering the target ship immobile. You can also target a ship's Warp system, Weapons, etc. Though doing so requires *real* skill and quick mouse and keyboard.
Homeworld has a greatly dwindled though persistent community, and the developers continue to maintain the site and forum though the game is no longer being developed. The Publisher owns the game, but last I heard the Developers are attempting to purchase the rights.
2) Space Empires. This is a Turn-Based-Strategy game with an equal and possibly greater complexity and depth than Eve. I have not played this game extensivly, as I discovered Eve shortly after purchasing it.
(see Official Sites at bottom of page) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Empires Space Empires series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
That said, I'd been looking at and thinking about Space Empires since its first incarnation many years ago. Space Empires is a VERY old game, but has continually been in development. It's first incarnation was for IBM's old OS/2 operating system and was very popular for that system. It was later ported to Windows after OS/2 lost the operating system wars.
One great difference between Eve and Space Empires is that Space Empires is largely abstract. Space Empires can be played in Multiplayer, but the combat is strictly abstract. Now what do I mean? Well, consider it this way, Homeworld being a RTS game has *real* combat; and Space Empires has non-real (abstract) combat; then Eve's combat is sort a combonation of the two. Eve combat is less *real* than Homeworld, but *more* real than Space Empires. Combat is not visual and is totally abstract.
Space Empires has an old and strong community (nice people) with a great site and forum, though there is no in-game Chatting feature. Again, if depth and complexity is the priority for you, then you should certainly give Space Empires a try. If not, skip it, as it may be an even more difficult game to start than Eve. :)

I've noticed similarities between and the game that I loved and played for several years WAAAAY back when. It's called Stars!
Can be played against 1 to 15 computer controlled or real players, via turn based play by e-mail. You are the "President" of a colony situated in a randomly generated galaxy. You design and build ships to explore, colonize and take over the other planets. The ship design is very similar to EVE, each hull type has a certain amount of slots that can only hold certain modules. Slap an engine, a scanner and some guns on a ship and voila! mass produce them and send them out to scan planets to see if they are habitable. As your population grows you have more resources to mine, produce and research. As you research you unlock new technologies (fix set of things you can gain depending on your race's attributes).
Build starbases to build your fleets and defend your planets. Build and control vast fleets of ships to wipe out any other living organisms in the galaxy.
Very fun game if you can find a copy of it. I think I bought mine in '96 or somewhere around there...

Freelancer or X3 Reunion. Freelancer is pretty straightforward, you have a ship and fly around blowing up stuff. The awesome part of FL is the systems are all unique, and have *lots* of character unlike X3 or eve for that matter. It has maybe 50 star systems and 300 or so stations, but each one is unique with its own backstory, trade routes, etc...no "generic caldari production station #1 type stuff".
X3 (and the other X-universe games) are very economically oriented, if thats your cup of tea. You can own lots of stations, buy and manage a huge fleet of AI controlled ships in addition to your own, and the graphics are pretty sweet. One thing to note, if you buy an X game be damn sure to get all the relevant updates, the developer is notorious for the initial release being pretty much unplayable, followed up by lots and lots of patches and new content. Also, X3 is very easily moddable, and pretty much all the AI code is scripts that can be messed with.
DarkStar One is another one in the vein of Freelancer (in that its you in your one ship), but IMO FL is better because DSO also suffers from lack of ambiance. Pretty much each system is the exact same, with a single "trade station" in each that you can dock at and do stuff. _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

Conquest Frontier Wars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conquest:_Frontier_Wars) has so many of the same things as EVE that its scary. Jumpgates to other systems, admirals that give gang bonuses to fleets, Dreads, Carriers (with fighter obviously), BS's etc etc. Blow a ship and it will leave some resources that you can harvest ...
Pity they cancelled the follow up, probably would have had POS's, Titans and lots of lag |

If people want something like this, but with far greater visuals, modules like in EVE and the player controlling no more then five ships at a time, mostly just one to three, you should check out:

A big up for Stars!, it is a superb game. No graphics, it is all windows based with a 2D map, but as a pure strategic/resource game it is right up there. The races you could play were fully moddable also, so you could either create your own or tweak an existing race to suit how you wanted to play the game. The AI is reasonably good as well, which made it a challenge.
