I generally do the same, though I find that some of the same people who insist on female equality get ****ed off when you treat a woman the same as you treat a man.
For my part, I bought into the whole female equality thing when I was younger, so I generally don't treat female acquaintances or strangers any differently than I would a man - I don't expect anything special from them, and they shouldn't expect special treatment from me in return.
That said, an interesting little incident occurred about a week ago that reminded once again that a double standard still exists--one that usually favors the female. Basically, I was out NPCing in 0.0 with a PvP-fit nighthawk when I ran across a neutral raven. I tried to report it twice on TS, but the lady who was speaking just kept talking over me both times. At that point, I just said what I'd say to anyone who kept talking about carebear stuff when I was trying to report intel on enemy combatants: I told her to shut up. I was booted off TS almost instantly by an irate male admin who seemed to feel that women need some sort of special protection, despite the fact that there was a hostile in the area and I was engaging it at the time.
In real life, I still see the same double standard being applied in the court system, where it often seems that the female is presumed to be the victim and the male the criminal. I'm not saying we (men) aren't often the ones at fault, but the whole "innocent until proven guilty in a court of law" thing often gets thrown out the window when it's male vs. female.
