Uh ... Ms. Ju'wien? Leaving aside the irony of someone loyal to Sansha insulting someone by calling them a cog in a machine, are you really a Sansha loyalist?
Most of the ones I've met haven't been quite ...

They typically seem to be more the disenchanted idealist "utopia at all cost" sort.

Yeah, you activate it by having half a dozen incursion runners blow up a few hundred of their ships, destroy a supercarrier, and then wake up long enough to warp home. |

That seems to be the case, yeah.
It's the result of someone hacking my infomorph in storage and digitally corrupting a lot of it, so it's not like I just hit my head or something. Practical skills and intellectual knowledge survived; pretty much nothing else did.

You mean did an active copy of me hack her own backup copy in long-term storage and leave that copy a sinister note about it to pass on to herself?
... No.
Or at least, it's not very likely.
My predecessor's death isn't confirmed, but she's missing, and has been for years. I wasn't supposed to activate, and should have been terminated by an automated system (hacked) or manually by cloning bay staff (blackmailed) before the clone activated fully, but once I was active Zainou and station administration were confronted with an illegally-activated but fully viable amnesiac duplicate of a missing, possibly dead, capsuleer-- a walking, talking crime scene who was also a person.
It was basically shoot me or let me occupy my former identity until someone found a better copy. And ... they took a bit about it, and probably talked with a bunch of lawyers, but apparently decided to err on the side of not shooting me.
From context, my "creators" are probably people hunting my predecessor. She left the Angel Cartel on kind of extremely bad terms. I don't know for sure of course, but I'd guess I'm probably a trap for her, something to bait her into resurfacing so they can do whatever they're planning on doing to her.
I doubt she will, even if she's still alive, though. And in the meantime, I don't feel like I owe very much to either side, so....
It's my life, for now. And I'll live it while it's mine. |

This conversation may have derailed slightly and I apologise for her doing in this, but in all honesty it is super swell seeing sooooo many awesome faces from all walks of life and followings. Having been IN... (got it right this time) exile for so long, I'm happy that the 'cluster keeps on keeping on.
Also, Aria... super sad to hear about that weird-as-stuff happening. I remember you being a thoroughly inquisitive and deep pensive sort and it was good to work alongside you when I actually took a break from all the killing and murdering to do science with you and the Sisters.
Anywho, with all said an' done, when are we having this chat folx? I gotta busy schedule with dates and dances and drifters...

In a world of infomorphs and all manner of potential infomorph corruption, malicious modification or other means of compromise, it's a pretty daft capsuleer that doesn't have a whole lot of layers of security including... let's call them "rollbacks" and redundancies.

Lot-¦s of CONCORD regulations kinda monopolizing the market. The fluid router business got on pretty good with several companies operating it (with due supervision from concord of course), why the clone market doesn-¦t do the same points only to an agenda of their own to limit our power, the available technology, and most of all, protecting the gateless doors of the dreamstate.

Screening violently psychotic tendencies out, rather than seeming to screen toward them, might be a good start. Given the number of eggers who are rampaging murderbots with no other real ambitions... I can't imagine that's a normal sampling of the population, even with my generally dim view of humanity. That has to be a trait or tendency the capsuleer programs look for and promote. |

Unless whatever it is that allows us to survive the process is also mostly prevalent in murderously inclined individuals. A linkage of traits. |

I suspect it's (another) few filter effects. At a guess, it might be things like the nice, sane, and well-socialized capsuleers tend to stay inside Empire capsuleer programs, rather than the wild independent bunch. Or the demands of being a successful independent capsuleer requiring quite a lot of bloodshed. The gentler souls wash out, eventually, or the weight of it all simply starts fracturing our psyches in interesting ways.

Perhaps those are precisely the ones capable of enduring such a process.
As mentioned, the psychological resilence to endure the dissolution of ego is as important as the physiological compabilities. I can-¦t find the bibliography right now, but that may be one of the factors of such a large portion of achura capsuleers within the ranks.

Mental conditioning aside, Achura do tend to find the capsule attractive for about the same reason our monks tend to practice martial arts so much: shifting the borders of what constitutes the "self."
Traditional: practice with that [insert weapon here] until it becomes a part of your arm. Train until you move and act without thought, as naturally and automatically as wind blows or water flows. Be a sword, be a knife, be a gaffe hook and pole-- and realize, in that time, where is "self"?
Capsule: jack into a chunk of technology and poof, you're a supercarrier. Where is "self"?
You can maybe see the appeal of taking the kinda-sorta shortcut and getting to see the stars in the bargain instead of being stuck on Achura all your life. |
