I am still confused and I can't understand the differense between Afterburners and Microwarp Drives. Help?

Well basically, MWD makes your ship go faster than an AB, but can't be used in deadspace. And they also make your sig radius larger.

MWD is also much harder to fit, and knocks off 25% of your capacitor.

MWD makes you go a lot faster,Ab makes you go a little bit faster.MWD takes 25% of your cap stright away and uses more cap when running. It also makes your ship apear bigger to other ships ie; they can lock you quicker and hit you for more damage if you dont keep your transversal up.MWD won't work in deadspace and not in gas clouds.I never use an ab for anything (Apart from deadspace).

You could illustrate it this way also: AB: ==> MWD: ============>

MWD's make you take more damage from the enemy as well, since it increases your signature radius. But the speed can help you avoid damage sometimes. It all depends, which is the beauty of the Eve combat system.

MWD also plays heck with your tracking speeds

Lots of differences.
Afterburner makes you go 2 X as fast. MWD makes you go 5 X as fast.
MWD is harder to fit, takes more capacitor per second and penalizes your overall capacitor by 25%
MWD makes your sig radius 5 X as big. So effectively, the afterburner is better than MWD for dodging bullets.
Hope that helps. -Bart

Edited by: Neuromandis on 15/05/2007 21:31:35 For many occasions:
Afterburner is a "tanking" module - it makes you go a bit more than double your speed, which makes you that much harder to get hit by turrets and reduces the damage of missiles. It uses a reasonable amount of cap and has no other drawback except for the fact that you must be able to hit your target better than he can hit you (i.e. a frig orbiting a cruiser and using an AB would have no problem, a cruiser using an AB would usually gain no discernible benefit against a similarly fit cruiser because he reduces his own chance to hit as much as he does his enemy's - except if you're using missiles and/or drones to damage your target)
Microwarpdrive is primarily designed to get you in range of your weapons, close in on otherwise unreachable targets, and run away - it is generally NOT purposed to be used during actual combat. It comes at great cost: First, a 25% reduction of cap, a very big penalty. Second, it is much costier to fit, limiting the rest of your fitting. Third and most important, while active the MWD quintuples your signature radius. That make a frigate as big as a cruiser, and a cruiser bigger than even a battleship. While this *tends* to get nullified by the much higher speed you can attain, it seems that it not always the case. In fact, most times you will be *easier*, to hit while the MWD is engaged. An exception is the use of missiles: They usually do less damage to MWD'ing oppponent. MWD also uses great amounts of cap - leave it on, and you're bound to run out of cap soon. So, you use a mwd to close in to your opponent and then shut it off so you don't run out of cap and he doesn't kill you while you're starbase-sized, while you, with your quintuple speed, have trouble tracking him with your guns. Effectively the MWD penalizes you MORE than your opponent damage-wise except if you're both using missiles in which case your mwd is advantageous. In essence, you use a MWD in the case where you HAVE to be faster than your opponent, or you die - example is ships that fight point-blank: Blasterships and autocannon ships.

MWD makes u much faster than AB but is harder to fit, lessens your cap and increases your sig by a significant amount.
What to use depends on the ship/setup/tank.
MWD = for speed as tank to avoid fire/nos/web and get out quickly if if needed or to get closer into range of your guns AB = for ships that like to fit big guns or missiles and have enough range to hit without getting close and wont lose too much mobility |

omg, another echo thread!
"MWD will make your ship go faster than an AB will, but will reduce your total cap and increase your sig radius"
c'mon guys, let's do this!

MWD gives more speed boost MWD adds more signature radius MWD uses more cap MWD reduces max cap MWD uses up more PG MWD can't be used in deadspace both have the same mass addition both give the same thrust
some shjp (like industrials) can't usualy fit a MWD
