One of our event volunteers attempted to host an event tonight that seems to have caused some confusion. I'd like to clear up a few misconceptions, explain a couple of things and put some fears to rest.
First of all, it is not possible for ordinary characters (i.e. non-volunteers or unofficial representatives of EVE) to have colored text. When a volunteer leaves the program, that special account is closed and they can no longer access it. No regular accounts have colored text.
The colors indicate the following: Teal = a lower-level volunteer Green = an upper-level volunteer Red = GM Blue = CCP
Event volunteers sometimes need to scout things out on Tranquility in order to get more accurate data on who and what is in a particular system when they are planning an event because spawns are different on the two servers. So, you may see them occasionally wandering about and this doesn't immediately signify that someone is "spying" on you. Before they are allowed to do this research, their events have been approved by us and we know where they are going to be and why.
Due to game mechanics, events that will involve hunting a role played character, or RPC, have to be conducted in the lower-sec areas of space. Trying to do it in Empire Space would result in CONCORD attacking the participants, which we'd like to avoid, obviously. Therefore, it is not unusual for events to be held in 0.0 space. Again, we are aware of this beforehand and we have approved the events, so we know where the volunteers are and why they are there.
Please do not automatically presume that everyone has some kind of evil ulterior motive or that all volunteers have some sekret pirate character as an alt that they are going to use to annihilate the unsuspecting. If a character with colored text pops into your local channel and says something like, "I need brave, able-bodied pilots to help me right away!" that's not someone trying to make player pirate fodder out of you. That's someone trying to give you a good time with an event - and you could wind up with some great stories and cool loot from it.
For those of you Chicken Littles who automatically assume the sky is falling and feel the need to cover your head with foil so the satellites can't send mind-scrambling rays into your heads, if you want to verify that an event is legitimate, you can hop into the ingame Help Channel and ask the vols available there or ask in the #Eve-chaos IRC channel.
Sheesh, folks. Ya ask for events and we try to give them to ya, then ya start wigging out on us. Our poor vols are damned if they do, damned if they don't. Lighten up.
As always, please feel free to e-mail me if you have questions.
