I am in a nighthawk and I want to hear all of the opinions possible about the active vs. passive tank issue. I understand all of the basic components of each argument, so I hope this thread is a little more refined thatn some others.
The big issue I face is starting with the Rigs. Unless I go with dps rigs, I will have to choose between cap recharge rigs or core defense rigs. Cap vs. shield recharge. The problem being is that once you put the money into the rigs, you cannot get it out.
On that point, I am leaning to an active tank. I want to use the ship for PVE and PVP. I will run a gist c large booster, 2 invul IIs, Photon II, and maybe a large shield extender II or afterburner.
With 2 PDU IIs and 2 Cap recharge rigs, I could run that tank for a long time... Using quickfit, something like 10 mins plus using everything, maybe longer.
I understand the nos issues in PVP. But if you have 6 ships pounding on you anyway, even with a passive tank, aren't you going to die the same death?
In PVP, the nighthawk would be used in small roving gangs and not in larger fleet engagements very often.
The active tank seems more versatile to me, unless you spend 1 billion isk on amazing passive tanking mods.
Please post all thoughts, I am very curious to hear as much as possible.

To me it all revolves around wether you want to fit a mwd(and in small roaming gangs you want). I have yet to see a good passive tank with two large extenders and a mwd, it just doesnt fit.
The huge advantage of a passive tank however is that it easily survives a DD hit, unless your already around 50% shields where your recharge starts getting good.

See, main thing about PVP is that you dont wanna use too expensive modules. Properly equipped (Gist-X LSB, good SBA, etc) active-tanked Nighthawk will probably show best numbers, but I doubt you gonna take that into PVP. On other hand passive tank is pretty cheap and yet efficient. And you are right mentioning NOS, they give headaches for shield boosters sometimes. I currently use active tank on my Nighthawk w/o any shield extenders, but for PVP I'd switch for passive.

On my Nighthawk i run an active tank for PvP which has proved very effective in small roaming gangs, and even medium sized fleet engagements.
Highs- 6 HMLII 1 Small Neut
Mids-
T2 Invuln T2 Photon Medium Elec. Cap. Booster T2 SBA Dread Guristas Large Shield Booster (Only costs about 30mil)
Lows-
3 T2 BCS 1 T2 PDS 1 T2 DCU
2 Cap. regen rigs
Tank is very solid, as is damage output.

Well considering BC's just go the nerfbat to their shield recharge (thank the whiners of the drake) You really dun have alot of choice but to go with an active tank if you want to do any dps to a target.

It hurts your HP regen a little but base HP matter more for PvP and it boosts those.
öThe active tank seems more versatile to me, unless you spend 1 billion isk on amazing passive tanking mods.ö You donÆt need to spend 1 billion 20 odd million on a gang implant with a bit more ISK on the 2 other implants and some gang skills gives you 20% hitpoints, 5% shield recharge which boosts the passive tank a lot often pulling it ahead of active tanks when in a gang. (5% HP, 5% recharge solo)
Active tanks are often better solo but passive tend to work better in groups. Its very hard to spend 1 billion on passive tank mods as there just are none. Apart from T2 rigs which people donÆt use in PvP there are no expensive items.

The Nighthawk is not a Battle Cruiser - it's a Command Ship. So far the information coming from the test server is that Command Ships are unaffected by the change.
This is to be expected given that it takes a lot more isk and a helluva lot more time to train for command ships. I don't think many sensible people complain about their tanking ability. BCs though are another matter. These are supposed to be a poor man's BS and as such they should be significantly weaker across the board.
For me it has to be passive all the way (or at least no boosters)..but I'm a mission runner looking for safety above DPS. I like the fact I don't need to be constantly looking at my shields :) -- (Battle hardened industrialist)
