So I was within about 120 km of a Jove Observatory, hisec...flying a Noctis cleaning up from the ratting in the area. I stopped by to take some screenshots for our Corp exploration photo diary/log.... Out of nowhere for the first time (for me) the Autothysians aggro'd with no provocation. It was unpleasant, lost a brand new ship and about 90M isk but it dropped (a measly) 49Misk in salvage. I was already aware that they won't let you salvage your wreck: previously, I watched cloaked while someone else whom had recently gotten popped, got deshipped again twice going back and forth from their POS to try to salvage their wreck a while back...they finally gave up.
Anyway, I went for it with a cheap industrial, and barely made it out with 2 bars structure left. I did, however, find a way to loot my wreck: go ahead from a very close station or with a corpmate or scanner alt. Have the scout go first (give them the bookmark, or via fleet). They deship first at the station, and they can approach the wreck without aggro. Have them signal to you when the NPC warp out. It takes quite a bit of time for them to warp back in, target you, and blast you. Once you've earned to zero and looted your wreck scram and be sure to dock somewhere for a long while, as these guys bring in the big guns and will camp you right outside your structure for a bit. Has anyone else has experience with these NPC? Describe you encounters. Fly safe in the Oneness. |

Have you ever shot them before? I've always considered those NPCs as if they had standings that couldn't be fixed, and they spawn absolutely everywhere. So I don't touch them.

Their behavior varies upon where you encounter them afaik. Around gates, stations, or whatever, unless you agress them first or have in the recent past, they will ignore you. Possible exception (I cannot verify) is if you have a corpse in the cargo bay. Around the observatory they are much more territorial; they seem to give you a short time to look and then they arrive to kill you. Of course attacking the lancers anywhere also triggers a chance that their big brother shows up to ruin your day. As long as you have the descan up, at the proper range, and spamming the scan button, you usually have enough warning to warp off before he arrives, just make sure you are already aligned and moving.
To buck the popular trend, I began to Rage Start instead of Rage Quit.

Yes, I have also lost a ship (a mere Imicus, early in my EVE-playing career) to Lancers that behaved unexpectedly at a Jove Observatory. I *think* that they were already present there when I arrived, but even so I would have (at that point) simply ignored them as always, everywhere else. Next thing I know my ship is torn asunder and I am scrambling to get clear in my egg-shaped underwear (as I had heard/read somewhere that Lancers will attack even pods - can't confirm, personally.) I had prior to that visited several Jove Observatories, even spent considerable time at one or two of them (one of the first I took the time to fly near to and buzz, even though they are unmanned, while on at least one occasion I hung about and probe-scanned signatures from the vicinity of another), and never before had I met any resistance, except one time when there had been some rats there (I forget what sort, but the local pirate colour, I think.)
Incidentally, I have also heard about the alleged Lancers' aggro toward funeral directors, but I can neither confirm nor deny, as I have not yet been rich and bored enough to put it to the test. :P |

They become aggressive if you go near their structures.

I was a long way still from the observatory but I suppose this was the trigger. I do pick up dead bodies Hegel but not a funeral director per say. |

I heard the four empires like the Autothysian Lancers a lot and let them roam free through their space... |

When you don't know the difference between there, their, and they're, you come across as being so uneducated that your viewpoint can be safely dismissed. The literate is unlikely to learn much from the illiterate.

Never shot them. They do seem to aggress me at gates now, I have to move very quick but they are fairly slow on the draw. I've only accidentally autotargeted them while they were shooting me, but never fired a volley. The second I decloak at a gate they take an aggressive stance and I boogey and get shields up.
I think I may have shot at a Jove structure in lo-sec once, before I knew what they are. I also often follow the battleships into the drifter wormholes. I think these may have something to do with the aggro... I do also pick up any corpses i find, which is kind of a morbid collection I started a while back, but I do it to try respect and honour the fallen, I offer them back to their owners and ask only for a donation if they wish to give, for our rescue service. |
