"SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT ACQUIRES LEADING ONLINE GAMES STUDIO -- SIGIL GAMES ONLINE SOE Strengthens Portfolio with State-of-the-Art Development Studio & its Marquee Game Vanguard: Saga of Heroes May 15, 2007 San Diego, CA û Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE), a global leader in the online games industry, today announced that it has completed a transaction to purchase key assets of Sigil Games Online, Inc. Through the deal, SOE now owns Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, SigilÆs tentpole property, a highly-successful massively multiplayer online game. The Sigil acquisition also builds on SOEÆs successful strategy of cultivating game development studios around the world to further boost the companyÆs capabilities. The announcement was made by John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment.
As part of the acquisition, a majority of the Sigil team will join SOE, integrating into SOEÆs worldwide group of studios which includes offices in San Diego, Seattle, Austin, Denver, Los Angeles and Taiwan. The acquisition will strengthen SOEÆs position as a leader in the online gaming space by expanding the companyÆs portfolio of gaming offerings.
ôWith an unparalleled team and exceptional product, Sigil has been a creative force in the online games space. We look forward to continuing the vision for Vanguard and to continue to deliver some groundbreaking game play,ö said Smedley.
In May 2006, SOE acquired the titleÆs rights and the two companies agreed to co-publish Vanguard. The MMO launched in late January of this year and has sold nearly 200,000 retail and digital units worldwide. Sigil CEO and Vanguard creator, Brad McQuaid will become a consultant with SOE as Vanguard Creative Advisor.
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes takes place in the fantasy setting of Telon, a vast and ancient world of magic, intrigue and adventure where thousands of players from around the world have formed a steadfast community exploring the grandeur of a world crafted by the seminal fantasy artist Keith Parkinson. The game introduced many groundbreaking new features and an art direction second to none."

Two things come to mind:
(1) Vanguard sucked. (2) I couldn't care less.

"Groundbreaking new features"? "Art direction second to none"?
Who writes this?
All their features were broken on launch and their graphics are horrible.

Buggy?! You ever played Knights Of The Old Republic 2? I played it like 4 or 5 years ago and it was riddled with them. Funny enough I bought a copy LAST WEEK and downloaded the newest patches. SAME EXACT BUGS. It's insane. And Vanguard? Never heard of it......kinda makes me out of place in this thread huh? Oh well :) -Sig- Green Gecko Inc. A corp, A family. Er, you bought it again? After knowing it was buggy?
But yeah, it was buggy. Dantooine (or however the hell you spell it) was exceptionally buggy. My computer would slow to a halt in some places there. The Dantooine slowdown was noticeable in the first KotOR too but only slightly.

The real question here is that given how hard Vangard sucked before SOE took over, is it even possible for SOE to screw it up even harder? Granted, SOE's game destroying powers are formidable (SWG, Planetside, etc) but Vangard was terrible in a whole new way. Is SOE up to the task?

My girlfriend pointed this thread out to me, and said "There goes Vanguard."
.....
.....
I burst out laughing and said, "WHAT?!?" Vanguard doesn't need help from SOE in that department.
Given that the illustrious EQ creators promised that Vanguard would never fall under the evil sway of SOE, this is quite an interesting bit of news. I'd dearly like to see what the Vanguard forums look like. =p
Highly successful MMO....*snickers*

Heh. Your galfriend points you towards threads.

Sorry. I just had his mental image of a whole harem pointing DS towards threads.
Anyways. I suggest you SOE-haters read the interview in the second link. Also, an interesting thought was thrown around here.
I think it is possible that SOE could take the piece of crap that is Vanguard and fix it up.
Stranger things have happened.

They don't have an official forum, except for a tech support one at SOE. Kinda says something about the whole debacle, doesn't it.

They do since the moment SOE took over. From what little I've gathered, Sigil was the side insisting on not having official forums.
Irony.

I thought SOE already owned Vanguard? They published it didn't they (six months earlier because of financial losses)? The early publishing of an online game in order to get subscription fees into the sweaty fists of developers will eventually kill it. That's what happened to Seed: The Game (most people won't have heard it but in theory it looked great; but the devs had to release it early with hundreds of bugs and it died because players left due to the bugs).
Personally I think the MMOG market is getting too crowded now. Games developers are turning to MMOG design because stand alone games are becoming less profitable. The temptation of subscription gameplay (which defeats piracy at the same time) is too great and thus they end up creating games which are buggy and ill thought out.
Guild Wars stands out, with its non-subscription based MMOG style gameplay. Although the game itself is quite bland and more of an experiment in style over substance, the structure of full priced expansion packs rather than monthly subscriptions (combined with good marketing) seems to be working for them.
