hey all,
im thinking of training one of my 2 miners up for support for lvl 4 missions and whatever comes my way later on. My main is in a raven so i was thinking of focussing on cap and shield transferring but i dont know if that would be the best way to go.
The alt im going to use is a miner and has no combat skills outside what is needed for mining, but has V/IV in all but the charisma learning skills.
what would be a good training path to take, and are there shipclasses/-races that are mores suited to this role then others?

Edited by: Mike Yagon on 17/05/2007 11:53:33 Look into training him up with leadership skills. With the siege warfare skills you can give yourself 10% more shield HP, a bunch of resists, 22.5% reduction in shield booster cap use and 22.5% increase in shield booster cycle rate. Once you train up said alt into a vulture things get even more interesting. You can get up to 25.7%. This requires the siege warfare mindlink, but that implant isn't exactly expensive either.
So all in all, it can increase your tank a fair amount, speed up your raven by 10% and give you 10% further locking range.
I recommend throwing Siege Warfare Specialist 4 (Or 5), Skirmish Warfare 5, Information Warfare and Warfare Link Specialist 4 (Or 5) into EVEMon and see what kind of skilltime you get.
*edit* what's even better, you don't actually have to watch your alt if it is getting shot at or anything. You can just leave it hanging in space outside dock.

The best support ship for a Raven is another Raven . It's all about superior firepower IMHO. Yes, you can feed the cap and shields for 10 minutes... or you can simply kill your adversary in 2. Sorta the need for cap/shields transfer goes away. Works for me but, as usual, YMMV...

Consider a Domi with heavy repair drones, shield transfer and energy transfer. Doesn't take too long to train and works a treat.

I agree with Caldar totally, why have a slight amount more shields/firepower/cap when you can have double, might even give you a fighting chance at lvl 5's too.

What Caldar suggested. I have tried various combinations (logistic cruisers + Raven, Raven + shield transfer Scorpion and Raven + Raven) and fastest 2 character team for level 4 missions I have found so far is 2 Ravens - one with torpedoes and another with cruise missiles. In that case target painters are also quite handy.
It used to be possible to jump in with your 'main' draw full stage agro and jump in support to help tank it all but due to reinforcment waves in new missions nowdays your support ship needs also strong enough tank to last should whole new wave drop on it.
If going for 'shield/armor/cap trasfer' route then use battleships over logisitc cruisers. Only advantage logistic cruisers have is range and that is irreleveant in lev 4 missions, battleships do all else better.
So yeh. 2 raven team. If you need little additional help for tanking drop wing of medium shield boost drones on both so they can assist each other. Your alt raven does not need stellar skills to be effective. T2 hardeners, T1 XL shieldbooster, cap injector and it will be ok. With good CPU skills can even fit T2 XL booster. Just few weeks of training.

I personally use a domi as a supporter for my raven. Fit it with 2 large shield xfers and 2 large energy xfers and your tank will never die. While I pop the big ships with torps, can use the drones from the domi on everything else. Works like a charm for me.

Let us not forget the option of a Cloak on the support ship for those wave missions. If you're managing things properly you will know when the next wave is about to arrive, so you recall drones and cloak the support ship. As soon as you have the next wave locks the combat ship you're back in buisness.
Second best to a Domi for support role, in my admittedly limited experience, is a Typhoon. 125m3 drone bay and you can mount 4 launchers and still carry 5 medium drones for helping with those annoying Frigates. Or keep an Armor drone around just in case :) Has a pretty good Cap too to keep the Xfer modules running.
Just be aware of anything getting inside that 2k limit on the support ship.

In the short term, you can set up an osprey to run 3 medium shield transfers non stop pretty easy. This was before rigs and t2 cap modules when i did it so its very easy now giving you breathing room to fit an afterburner and tractor beam to loot. This obviously isnt brilliant on trigger missions, but it could tank a raven through any mission pre-revelations.

Main: ROKH
Shield ressists near/over 90. Dual 250 in high for BC / BS poping Basic shield boosting (for the times when the support is not there / needs to warp out)
Support: Domi
4x large shield transfers (384 shield per sec) maxed out drones
Support 2: Absolution
Most of the time i'm lazy and just let him sit in the same system for the leadership bonus and a shield resist boost. If i fell like going overkill i just send him in -> 600 DPS cleans the stuff so fast its not even funny.
The goal is to aggro the whole room and just tank it out -> with 90+ resists and 350+ shield / sec there is never a problem. The only downside of the missions atm is the cleaning up (pleas CCP give is some specialized looting/salvage ships).
The idea with the cloak on the Support is really sweet.

Of course, once that month is up, that's not to say your alt shouldn't get those leadership skills.
