Gun discussions are always fun on the net, 95% of the time those who claim they own a Desert Eagle are really teenagers or CS players that do not own one of those heavy pieces of impractical firepower.
Hell, an M4 weighs less than one of those hand cannons.

You cannot deny the jubilation you'd feel with a hand cannon in your mitt.

wha?!? impractical?!?
okay maybe a bit, but a joy to shoot nonetheless, the design is just nice, not as much kick as even a snub 38 or *shudder* magnum .357
especially considering the calibre.

For all of you who don't know what a Desert Eagle is, watch the Matrix (any of them). I guarantee you that 9 out of 10 guns are DE's.

dear god, am i the only person to like this gun? never mind the whole "blow big holes in things" aspect, and the looks, i've relly enjoyed this thing, one of my favorite gun, my one big complaint is that the bullet's so heavy that it drops a lot at range, but it's a friggin pistol, not a rifle! "At Range" ideally with this is about 30ft tops anyway (yes you can EASILY go further, but that's the furthest you're likely to have to shoot a pistol at outside target shooting)
now i'll admit for target shooting it's crap, but as far as the engineering, durability, ease of use, etc... i just don't understand all the hatin'

The agents used the DE's. Neo and Trinity used Baretta 92s when using handguns.
The DE is a movie favorite, and I love how they use them one handed...silly movies.

What I find curious is that they have blanks with enough power to get the pistol to cycle properly that don't show its true power. You'd think the cartridge would need to be neigh unto the same as the real round.

9mm or .45 Cal
Depends on the situation. For self defense I would say the .45 is the better choice. Stopping power is always a plus when you may be fending off a methed up addict.
9mm I like more for combat due to the magazine capacity and higher velocity of the ammo.
As for the the guy who said Bolt action over assault rifle depends on the situation.
A sniper does best with a Bolt action(manual extraction even). but try laying down suppressive fire on 30 Hostiles with a bolt action and the short comings become obvious.

IIRC, there are modifications that need to be done to a automatic to make the slide cycle "correctly" using blanks. It has been years since I read about it, but IIRC, the locking lugs have to be ground down. Something like that. I am too lazy right now to Google it.
There are lots of misfires when they use blanks. I have seen movies where you can clearly see the actor's finger move, but nothign happens. Of course, the actors "fake" the recoil and the foley artists add the "bang" but no flame comes out of the barrel.
I always laugh. In pity. Almost as much as I do when they "teacup" or show poor safety. Well, the poor safety makes me cry...almost. Ok, I swear at them mostly, but whatever.

In regards to guns, I haven't really had much opportunity to fire them. When I was a kid, I had a chance to shoot a single shot, bolt action .22 at a rifle range and wasn't that impressed (which was probably mostly a factor of my age, given that I was 13; I've learned since that bolt-action .22's are often hellaciously accurate).
A couple years back, however, I got the opportunity to use a pump-action 12-gauge shotgun when I went out to the desert with my brother-in-law and some friends, and that was extremely fun. What made it even more fun was the fact that it was loaded with slugs, not buckshot. Not much on accuracy, but anything you hit...well, 'nuff said. -Wrayeth n00b Extraordinaire

I have to agree. The Desert Eagle is a great work of engineering. It's also large, heavy, not particularly accurate, and likely to blow straight through your target, a few brick walls behind them, and hit an innocent bystander down the street. But when it comes to blowing holes in things using a (relatively) small package, it's top notch.

When it comes to personal defence, HK MP7 and FN P90 are the win. Its a pity that they are too expensive and, hehe, are illegal =)

They should both be available as class III weapons, which is a pain, but is at least possible to get legally. The P90's 50 round clip is somewhat over the AWB 10 round maximum, but that law isn't in effect for the moment . . .
I believe the P90 also comes in a semi-auto civilian version.

To be fair, they were virtual reality super men who could lift cars over their heads, punch through walls, and move faster than a bullet. Firing a powerful handgun with one hand isn't exactly the least believable of their feats --------

Yeah, right. This is what shooting a .50 caliber deagle looks like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__JkOUheyVk
Look at that and tell me that there's someone who can fire it one-handed without shattering their wrist.
I've not found a single video where a person fired a deagle one handed that wasn't either firing blanks or was using a piddling 9mm.

It should be mentioned that while some only refer to the .50 cal DE as the "Desert Eagle", they make it for far more calibers than just .50.
The lesser caliber DE's are likely what you would see someone shoot single handed...and frequently what are used (with blanks) in movies.
The calibers change, the appearance stays the same.

out of all the 100+ responses I doubt there are more than a handfull of people that could physically fire a .45 without dislocating their shoulder or *****ing their skulls with the recoil.

I own a Springfield 1911 .45 ACP. If you are a 120lb girly man, you might have some problems, but if you know what you are doing, you shouldn't have any problem with the recoil.

HAHA.
I get about 1-2 inches of "muzzle flip" when I fire my .45.
it isn't about size of the shooter anyway, it is proper stance, grip and arm strength. Not that much strength is really required. I am hardly "burly".
I've even tried the one handed Olympic stance and it is pretty controllable. Not too good with my left hand though. Bummer.
