I don't really remember when it got changed but somewhere along the RMR era you used to be able to fully zoom onto your ship or any object that could become the parent of the camera.
Nowadays, as you all might have noticed, the minimum zooming distance depends on the ship you're piloting, not the actual parent object of the camera, so if you are flying a battleship at the moment, you won't be able to fully zoom into a frigate for example.
So for those who used and knew both systems, basically what I'm asking is which camera style do you prefer ?

I hate the new system. I miss watching small ships in detail, i can't even look at my carrier fighters doing their maneuvers with the current camera system.

The thing I really hate about it is that it came in the same patch as the new bships/bcruisers. So you can't ever get a good close-up view of them if you're flying one. ==========

Don't get me started on the new "cinimatic" zoom from ship to map. It takes so $@#$ long, it's a pain in the ass. I used to be able to instantly switch to map look at something and switch back to normal view so i could look around now i have to wait forever for it to zoom back in.
And you also can't even go through a gate with the map open anymore or you end up somewhere between normal view and map view. Unable to see either until you close map "insert the new time consuming cinematic zoom" and then open map back up again. ____________

Agreed, the new camera system is far worse than the previous one. It seems like the zoom is limited to the size of the ship you are in, rather than the size of the object you are viewing. I've noticed I can zoom in pretty well on things if I'm in a frig, but when I'm in a Battleship I can't zoom in nearly as far.

Hold Right mouse button, move mouse one pixel, then hold your left mouse button whilst moving your mouse up or down, to gain extra zoom.

Maximum zoom is still limited even using this. Fighters are Maxiumum only 1/10th the size of the screen using this on your carrier. Fact is that the camera zoom was knackered 6 months or so back.

Proof that Newer isn't always better.
The new map and camera system just plain suck. They do nothing better than the old system and do a lot worse. Wouldn't be so bad but CCP has just ignored it all.
Is there anyone out there who would object to bringing back the old scanner, map, and camera controls? _______________________________ Pleese exucse any seplling erorr's in tihs psot |

Agreed, old map, old camera.
Keep the system map somewhere for scanners and explorers etc, but have F10 launch the proper map by default.
AND FIX THE GODDAM SUNS YOU HAD TO BREAK JUST TO GET THE 'SEAMLESS' MAP WORKING

Agreed, although without quite so much shouting.
I do like the new integrated star field, but the seamless map zoom is more trouble than it is worth. I really miss being able to focus the camera on smaller ships and drones, and the star effect! My God, CCP, bring it back... that effect was the best in the entire game.

Bump.
And yes, the first 2 times I saw it I though the seamless transition was cool. Now it just bothers me when it overlaps with a warp tunnel graphic and starts to confuse the game. Also, the star effect is broken and planets have had some weird graphical problems since that patch. The integrated starfield only nukes my FPS. New scanner is junk, need to have F11 open to know where I'm scanning.
I'd like an option between the two interfaces.

I miss being able to zoom in on the smaller objects.
Even the big ones. It was nice to get right up close and take cool screenshots from interestig angles.

above = alt post ftl :(
I have to agree with all the above posters that the new camera action is sadly nowhere near as good ass the previous one.
Not to mention the new overview causing lag whenever yuor Item Info window is open and you click ANYTHING. It makes PVE hard and PVP almost impossible to conduct in the fastest possible manner without getting major lockage of the client (by ctrl+clicking to target, quick-nav buttons, etc) :(
I guess it's like with the chat window, it always got a revamp with the new branches of the client and always some useful feature of it got the shft in the new one :) (see: highlighting all statements by hovered-over player, font, etc)
