I was after a scorp and this guy was prepared to swap any amount of skills and goods in exchange for his scorp. I actually laughed at his ad, but decided to play along...

Can you guys help a newb here? I played for the last couple of months in beta, but I only traded once. I recall trading on a station once, and there was a small trade window for the transaction. We each put our item into the window, and then we each had to confirm the trade.
I thought it would be possible to see the actual item that you're trading for. How is it possible to get scammed?

He renames the Condor to say Scorpion.
Some peeps do not know what the Scorp looks like nor check the stats.
They figure that because it says Scorpion, it is. Condor is the usual exchange item. I have 5 from bogus trades where the scammer just leaves it when challenged.
Some use the mauler for a Dominix for same scam.

yeah. it's insane. Buying such a big ticket item...
hell, i wouldn't buy ammo without actually checking to see if it's the right type!
actually that's not so minor. Thinking you're firing EMP when it's actually Carbonized Lead is bad, mmmmkay

I seem to have found the reason why AidenAiken is scamming...
I have known AikenAidan (notice, different spelling) for quite some time... When I heard the rumor yesterday of "Aiken is a scammer" going around in other channels I hang out in, I was puzzled, as I've been talking to AikenAidan since November or so, and he has always helped people and been very fun talking to.
I started looking into this, as I heard the NVA and others were trying to hunt him down...
When I found this post, I saw, that the name didn't match entirely... so I looked at AidenAiken's bio, where it said:

I thought that was weird: his character name is AidenAiken, but he signs "AikenAiden".. and he mentions "Univorsal Indespondant" which is AikenAidan's corp, only it's spelled "Universal Independent"... AND he mentions that he's been dealing scorps for UI for 3mths, then why was his character created on 01.01.04? And 3 months? The UI was created 1 month and 14 days ago (AikenAidan was the creator, and he started November 14th, 2003)...
So now I was pretty certain that AidenAiken was not AikenAidan, now I just needed to find the reason someone was scamming and pretending to be him... And I think this log between me and the *real* AikenAidan might show:

Well, it seems CCP are on the case... they answered the real AA's harrassment petition...

As you can see I an NOT AidenAiken.. I am AikenAidan.. The former is an Identity thief, and is in NO WAY connected to me, or to my Solo Corp. Universal Independents. Heck I don't even make ships. I THINK this fellow is related to the one that I exsposed to the GMs as useing exploytes getting the 2 charactures involved Deleted. So please Stop besmerching my good name and the Good name of my corporation. The GM's are currently looking into this Identity thief and his exploytes..
And Lacrimae is mistaken I dont even Know what a scorp is... I thought that was slang for serpentis corp pirates.
I will personaly buy a drink for each person that PODs that ****er [Plz dont get the spelling wrong]. I have been nearly blown away from pay back seekers for HIS Bull Pucky behavior...
Heedless to say I am ****ed [angry ,upset, disgruntled] at this Blatant disregard for the Harassment Policies of EVE. And if CCP doesnt Ban him them I'll quit..............
PS: I do sell ammo for Hybrids and FOF missles [lights and heavies], and will be suppling Targeted missles soon as I finish reserching them. Lowest prices in Renyn. The only ships I plan on building are the ones I will fly.

This is an UPDATE as to what the GM's did to punish this Multiple offence Harasser, Exployter, and Hack. Did they Ban him for repete offences NO... Did they delete his characture NO.... What you ask DID they do to him? They changed the Charactures name to eveplayer 17....
What in god's name [which ever one {if any} you believe in] is with these folks.. They Kiss the BUTTS of the very people that should NOT be allowed in EVE.. If this Turd wad ever does anything to me again then CCP will LOSE ANOTHER good paying customer..
Heck I might as well become a lieing, selfish, Harassing, Exployter just Like Him.. Who knows the GM's might even give me Tech 2 stuff like they give them..................

The GM's changed the name of 'AidenAiken' to 'eveplayer 17' [ NVA plz take notice ]. Seems more like they helpped Him out of getting POD'd, and Now Im the only player with that type of name. Guess I'll just give my stuff to the few good folks I know, and save myself 14.95 a month in fees................

THAT WAS A BAD SCAM the ident theft not the ship scam that was bad too but for other reasons heres how i spot a scammer if someone askes for some cash up front like say 6 million for a megathron id give min 2 million and see what happens saying ill give him the reset if he proves hes real and i mean really prove himself ( by the way 2 million is peanuts to me if you were wondering, so if you cant afford this dont acceps such a deal where you give money up front instead just post his name)
