God damn i hope they put some effort into this, although there isnt much chance they could come up with an MMO that could be anywhere near as good as the books. I've read the Horus Heresy books and a couple of the 40k books, and the depth of the stories are hard to beat. Great characters and 40 thousand years of history.
Fingers crossed they can pull it off.

x.X I don't get it. I mean, 40K and Blood Bowl are both Games Workshop games, but BB is set in the Fantasy world. 40K is sci-fi. Big difference.

Edited by: Hypatia Iola on 22/05/2007 20:02:18 yeah, posted about this myself some time ago, it's gonna be some time before it come out, though IIRC THQ's doing it so it should be good.

Won't work, Games Workshop is too greedy to properly fund it, have the worst management I've ever seen in this sort of genre, and there is too much competition.

Well at least its some comfort that Relic/THQ own the 40K license, Might not suck when it comes out like the fantasy one will <cough> WOW clone </cough>..

I hope this is good too!
The Dawn Of War games were utterly brilliant, and that was THQ right? So they should do a good job at this. Hopefully...

I'm not getting too excited till I see some details. GW haven't had a great history with MMOs, and come to think of it, games in general. Nice to see THQ got the rights to it (DoW was purely brilliant), although a shame to see someone other than relic get it. I guess relic don't do MMOs, but still, I've got a lot of respect for those guys. --------

Would be awesome to have the Space Wolves trials on Fenris .. from the tribal fighting on the seas over fishing grounds, to be chosen and taken to be trained under they eyes of the Wolves themselves.. all the way till you get offworld.
That type of buildup I would orgasm on.

NOOOOOO!!!! don't say things like that! they might not put SM in as a playable race, which'd be really nice, because it'd kinda put them on the pedestal they should really be on...
don't get me wrong, I LOVE SPACE WOLVES AND ALL, but no matter how hard the buildup to them is, if you make marines playable it will turn into SM online... because it's so recognizable... that and who doesn't want to be an 11 ft superhuman in indestrucible armor with a gun that shoots mss-reactive RPG's? i understand the appeal, but it'd be so sad for the SM to be diluted yet again...

Die-hard W40K players who used non-SM armies?
And all the people who go from MMOG to MMOG, writing elaborate backstories for their characters that have nothing to do with the setting of the game. 10m ISK says on the opening day, you'll see a few dozen Eldar named Legolas or variants thereof, and a bunch of Orks screaming about bringing death to Azeroth.
P.S.: Blood for the Blood God.

The terminally sad will be delighted to hear that the warhammer 40k mmo includes the Necromunda IP aswell, which as we all know, was a squad based semi-RP 40k spinoff which was much better than it's parent in every single way. Except nobody actually bought it and it got pulled.
Here's hoping it's not a half baked pile of ****e.

You may have a point, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. Space Marines are THE public face of WH40k, that even non-initiates might recognise, not to mention being the single most played tabletop side. If you think they'll be leaving them out, you'll be disappointed.
Still, I think lots of people will play other races. Walking immortal robot? Manga-esqe techno sniper? 9 foot tall green monster? Plenty there to attract you away from the SM. --------

Edited by: ry ry on 24/05/2007 11:43:36 actually one thing that does bother me a bit is how the player base will be distributed.
for example there are supposed to be innumerable imperial guardsmen from a thousand worlds accross the known universe, and an elite few space marines picked from a few feral deathworlds, but realistically there are going to be loads and loads of people wanting to be space marines, and very few people wanting to learn to play as a 'weaker' guardsman.
I only hope they don't bother trying to include Squats. it'd be a bit embarrassing to have an entire race nobody wants to be!
personally i'd want to play either a chaos character or a hiver. both those push my buttons way more than being a boring old spacemarine.

Remember, the space marines were originally all one chapter, but were split to ensure no one person would command so many elite warriors.
Each chapter (Space Wolves, Dark Angels etc) have a number of company's (each company numbers are approx 300 - 400 marines).
I am not sure how many company's there are off the top of my head, but their aint enough coz everyone would want to play as a space marine, rather than an imperial guardsmen.
Also, I wonder if they would let Dreadnought's be a playable race etc...now that would be cool using a power fist hehe.
Even more so, how about playing Nightlord / Chaos Space Marines......or even a Norn Queen

One suggestion someone made in the last 40k MMO thread was this: for all the "weak swarm" races, like the guards, the player could have a "pets" ability, where they summon ("recruit") an NPC sqquad to work for them. So in a 1v1 PvP situation between a SM and IG, you might have 1 SM player vs 1 IG player + 5 NPCs. That way the players are still "balanced", but the IG will effectively swarm the SM. --------

the more i think about it, the more i really like that idea.
it even fits in with the fluff - as you get more exp your rank increases and so does the size of squad you 'command'.
