It would be cool if eve-online did apply masses and correct radius to space objects. Like suns, planets, asteroids and so on. It would also be cool and reality vise to let object have gravity effect. Like if someone goes too close to the sun, he get pulled in or gets too close to a planet, with same effect.
In my opinion it is at least worth thinking about. Under a new name and new look. |

Only if they have their own killboards.
The k/d ratio of Jita 4-4 would be scary.

I don't think that the lag is going to be a problem. If this is correctly done. Under a new name and new look. |

Honestly, there are a lot of things that could be added for realism (stars doing proximity thermal/EM damage, collision damage on ships, etc) that would either: a) Only affect a small percentage of players (how many people spend that much time at or near a star?) b) not really add that much to the game, or c) cause too drastic of a change in play style (can you imagine having to travel in such a way that no planets/stars/stations/etc are in your path whenever you want to warp?)
Besides, if you wanted to be a real stickler for physics, there is no such thing as "explosive" energy. Kinetic by any other name :P

Gravity was never a huge headache with Star Control...
But then, consider also that ships are mostly inertialess and at the ranges we can easily travel to with respect to planets and moons, gravity isn't a real hardcore problem.
Earth's gravity only causes headaches for NASA because they only operate about 120-300 miles up. The closest EVE lets you get to planets is about 16,000 kilometers (7500 miles or so). Gravity ain't a real big puller at that range.
This is my sig, there are many others just like it. With me, my sig is worthless. Without (or with even) my sig, I am worthless... |

It is not the absolute gravitational effect that would be noticed, it is the tidal effect: the difference in gravity from the near and far sides of the grid. Every warp in point would effectively be in orbit around the nearest celestial body, so you would not drift anywhere from gravity. Tidal effects over a 500km grid at a range of 16,000 km would not add much to combat mechanics. If stations were in lower orbits then it could make things more interesting, but it would still leave star gates and belts untouched.

A few notes / problems with this.
Would require a good deal of dev work. Other problems in the game right now
Currently, a lot of warps take you into planets, this would cause some gravity problems. Don't want to be pulled around in warp... already shakey enough
POSes are fairly close to planets and moons. I dont want to have to have my thrusters on to stay by the arrays.
Drones already have enough problems don't want them flying into planets now....
It could work, not saying that a bad idea, but, many other problems, and, I think other content would be appreached by the overall playerbase more then being slowly pulled to a planet.

There'd be no FTL either. Any trip between planets would follow a Hoffman curve and take months. Communication between solar systems would be impossible. Trade wouldn't exist because, frankly, there's no point.
No one is going to ship livestock from one system to another. It's crazy. You ship the sperm and eggs once then grow your own. Same with items only more so. You don't ship the item..you transmit the blueprint.
It's highly unlikely that the manufacture or growing of anything is specific to a particular sun. That means all anyone needs is the blueprint or raw organic material and they can make/grow their own.
In fact give it a few centuries and all you'll need is the blueprint. All that sex stuff can be relegated to being purely for entertainment. Welcome to the future. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)
