Edited by: Jorix on 25/05/2007 17:48:45 I am not totally new to Eve (have been playing a few months), but I have so far stayed in Empire space in a mining corp. I have been reading a bit about the pvp that takes place in lo-sec and 0.0 (most of my info is from eve-tribune), but I still have a ton of questions. I was wondering whether there are any guides anywhere that explain large-scale 0.0/alliance warfare. Just a few of the questions I have are:
- How is a POS built? - What types of POS are there? - What is the definition of sovereignty? - How do POSes help claim sovereignty over a Region/Constellation/System? - Can two alliances at war set up POSes in the same Region/System? - Who owns the POS - the corp or the alliance that set them up? - What is the difference between a POS and a starbase? Are starbases owned by alliances? - What are the defence systems available to POSes and starbases? - How do standings affect PvP warfare? - What is "reinforced"? - How do capital ships warp between systems? - What is the role of carriers and motherships? - What ships are useful in a large fleet and what roles do the ships all play? ie - how dose a group of battleships support capital ships and vice-versa? - How are covert ships used in large fleet ops? - " " command ships " " "? - How are war-decs handled and what are the victory conditions?
I don't expect anyone to answer all of these questions - just wondering whether there are any good guides out there. By the way, I really think a lot of this information should be provided by CCP in the existing Player Guide or something, but I can't see it there.
Thanks Jorix

- How is a POS built? a person jettisons the POS parts (starting with the control tower) and anchors/onlines it. following that would be the rest of the modules for that POS.
- What types of POS are there? There are 4 races and they have 3 types of Towers: small, medium, and large. As for classifications for a POS: Death Star POS (all the firepower you can mount), Sponge POS (filled with ECM, warp scram, web batteries), Research POSs (filled with research labs, Outpost POS (refinery, corporate hanger arrays, and defenses)
- What is the definition of sovereignty? duno that one...
- How do POSes help claim sovereignty over a Region/Constellation/System? not that either
- Can two alliances at war set up POSes in the same Region/System? yes
- Who owns the POS - the corp or the alliance that set them up? believe its corp
- What is the difference between a POS and a starbase? Are starbases owned by alliances? I think you mean whats the difference between a POS and an outpost... an outpost is a station you can dock in, a pos is where you have to go up to it in space.
- What are the defence systems available to POSes and starbases? pos's can use gun batteries, electronic warfare batteries, launcher batteries.
- How do standings affect PvP warfare? You shoot whats ever is red to you
- What is "reinforced"? When a POS is sieged a pos goes into reinforced mode consuming a lot of fuel and strontium. The sieged pos goes into reinforced mode if it hits 30% shields. The POS cannot do anything after it goes into reinforced mode. It also becomes invulnerable but the length of this invunerability is determined by the amount of strontium it has loaded up. This can be from 1 hour to a week. After reinforced it is vunerable again and can be then recharged or destroyed by the attacking force.
- How do capital ships warp between systems? Cynofields - within systems they use a regular warp drive.
- What is the role of carriers and motherships? Logistics, WTFPWN ships, w/e you want them to be
- What ships are useful in a large fleet and what roles do the ships all play? ie - how dose a group of battleships support capital ships and vice-versa? Battleships take out support while capitals take out bships...
- How are covert ships used in large fleet ops? They scan down/probe down the enemy so that the main fleet can warp on top of them. They're used for recon
- " " command ships " " "? provide gang bonuses
- How are war-decs handled and what are the victory conditions? they can attack each other after 24 hours... blah blah blah

Lots of question lol You know the best way is to simply go do it, find a good corp and get involved. It's alot more fun than reading a guide too -----

...yeah and you can find Ozzies Pod just about every system you enter on the weekend.
Don't leap in till you're fairly up to snuff with skills and enough money to buy and equip your ship of choice x3 or so (unless capitals). For instance when I started, I stuck with Kestrels till I learned a thing or 3. I could afford to semi-max them and lose them.
In addition, get yourself some good experienced mates to spend time with constantly (not necessarily easy as most pro's can't be bothered to teach the Noobs). That is the only way you will survive long, and learn all the in's and out's (and there are a LOT of them). Lastly, don't join the 1st Corp you find. Research them to the degree you're able.
Good luck, and look for Ozzies Frozen Corpse at a system near you ;-)

- How is a POS built?
You buy them from NPCs and then anchor them, one per moon
- What types of POS are there?
There are 3 types of towers, standard (referred to as large), medium and small. They vary in Grid and Cap, see the item database. The different races burn different types of isotopes.
POS use however differs, there is production, research etc which is defined by the modules linked to it (again check the database)
The Death Star is a PoS that can kill any support fleet inside a certain range, it thus forces Dreads outside their optimals weakening their guns.
- What is the definition of sovereignty?
Controlling the largest number of highest level towers.
- Can two alliances at war set up POSes in the same Region/System?
Yes!
- Who owns the POS - the corp or the alliance that set them up?
The corp
- What is the difference between a POS and a starbase? Are starbases owned by alliances?
Starbases are outposts? They are essentially NPC stations without agents, many of their functions are changeable by the alliance who claims sovreignety over the system.
Think of Poses as the gaurd towers and the outpost as the factory/lab/market
- What are the defence systems available to POSes and starbases?
Starbases are unarmed. Poses have gun batteries (again check database) this includes scrams and webs.
- How do standings affect PvP warfare?
Not blue shoot it. If you mean faction standings forget about them.
- What is "reinforced"?
A tower has a store of strontium that burns when a POS shields reach a certain %. This gives it massive resists / invincibility. Timing strontium allows you to pick when the attack to kill the POS occurs. You cant add more stront while its being burned.
- How do capital ships warp between systems?
Another ship mounts a cyno generator as a module. When activated the capital ship can jump a number of light years to it. The number of light years depends on the ship.
- What is the role of carriers and motherships?
Massive tank, best drones, huge cargo bays. Fighters uniquely for drones warp after their targets making them very deadly. Fighters can also be assigned to other ships and can be commanded by those ships.
- What ships are useful in a large fleet and what roles do the ships all play? ie - how dose a group of battleships support capital ships and vice-versa?
All ships act differentley, generally battleships are good against capitals, since with enough numbers you can break their tank. Dreadnought have terrible tracking when in siege mode, and so are only very good at killing POS towers. Siege mode is activated by the siege module, see its description in the database. Cruisers and frigates are largely there to hold down capitals with tackles since Fighters will have difficulty tracking them. - How are covert ships used in large fleet ops?
They find the enemy ships and provide a warp in point.
- " " command ships " " "?
Tech 2 Battlecruisers. Incredible tanks, and good all round. They also are able to fit very powerful modules for gang bonuses. However the fleet system is largely believed to cause lag so it is a trade off.
- How are war-decs handled and what are the victory conditions?
War decs allow you to fight in hi-sec without interfernce.

This is actually a good topic, and you're right - the economics and mechanics of 0.0 space aren't really explained.
I might add the issues and answers to my newbie blog. http://hammer-eve.blogspot.com/

Agony Unleashed is a Good PVP school when they out number you 20 to 1. What a joke. If you want to do 0.0 PVP join a good corp that is in a decent alliance or just go in and learn from the school of hard knocks.

- How is a POS built? You buy Control Tower from NPCs in empire along with other components and POS fuel of course. You haul everything, anchor, fuel, put online. The tower consumes some amount of fule each day. POS typically have a ship array to store ships and refit them, a hangar array that only your corp has accesss to, some guns and e-war modules for self-defense. You can also refire ore and build things at a POS.
- What types of POS are there? Each race has a small, medium, and large POS. They all differ from one another in some aspects but also in what type of isotopes they consume. Ice in Minmatar space for example produces only hydrogen isotopes. So if you want to anchor a POS in minmatar space and mine ice for your fuel, better purchase a minmatar tower. Medium towers of course consume more fuel than small ones, and large consume the most. But they also provide the most grid so that you're able to anchor and online more things simultaneously at a large POS.
- What is the definition of sovereignty? - How do POSes help claim sovereignty over a Region/Constellation/System? - Can two alliances at war set up POSes in the same Region/System? https://support.eve-online.com/Pages/KB/Article.aspx?id=343
- Who owns the POS - the corp or the alliance that set them up? corp
- What is the difference between a POS and a starbase? Are starbases owned by alliances? POS is pretty much a fueled control tower that has a forcefield around it. Starbase is a station that you can actually dock to. Some starbases in 0.0 are NPC-owned (example: Stain region is controlled by Sansha). Conquerable outposts (non-NPS onse) are owned by player alliances. A conquerable outpost belongs to whoever holds sovereingty of the system. Sovereingty can only be claimed by an alliance, not corp or single player. Outposts also cost much more to construct. I think one costs about 40 bil while a small POS would cost you 150-200 mil without fuel.
- What are the defence systems available to POSes and starbases? You can anchor and online guns, launchers, and e-war modules at a POS. They need an onlined control tower to work. Starbases you pretty much have to defend with your alliance. You'd be defending not so much the outpost itself, but the POS you have in the system. Enemy alliance will try to destroy them and erect its own to claim sov over the system so that the outpost ownership changes hands.
- How do standings affect PvP warfare? You most definitly shoot things that are set red to you when you can and don't shoot players market with blue plus signs. Whether or not you can shoot neutral pilots depends on your corp/alliance policy. Some alliances are NBSI (not blue shoot it), which allows you to shoot neutral pilots anywhere. This is pretty much a fancy word for piracy, although some people do not agree. They justify NBSI by saying that they have to protect their space but you'd commonly see them NBSIing way way out of their space as well.

I will comment on the "reinforced mode" more, since pretty much everything else has been covered here and there.
Reinforced mode is a special mode for the control tower, which enters it when it's shields are dropped to 25% or lower (yes, the number is 25%, or exactly one quarter of total hitpoints). Reinforced mpode continues until all Strontium Clathrates are burned out (the exact requirements of this fuel varies by size of the tower, and can be found in the manage panel of the tower). Fuel can only be replenished once POS shields are up to 50% or higher. While pos is in reinforced mode, it doesn't burn any of the conventional fuel, although almost every system of the pos doesn't function. Function only those systems, which don't require CPU to run - motly Turrets and Maintenance bays. There also was issues with corporate hangars, dunno if they was resolved though. Also, while the control tower is in reinforced mode, it cannot be targeted and has huge resists, and there's a timer, visible by everyone, counting down till the end of the reinforced mode.

1) Have you ever taken a class or fought against us? I did a search on our killboards and didn't find anything, but it's possible you posted with an alt? Most of the time the people who criticize us are people who have never actually fought with or against us.
2) AU is a good 0.0 pvp corp in a decent alliance, and that's part of the point of the classes, getting a chance to fly with experienced gang leads and pvpers who can help you get better yourself. Agony exists as an entity outside of our classes, we live in Pure Blind, and we fight against some of the best pvpers around (IRON, BoB, MC, etc).
3) Of course you can just go out and wing it but the organized curriculum of our classes accelerates the learning process and after a couple of classes you have weeks or maybe months worth of experience.
4) Yes, sometimes we rely on numbers to win, but what do you expect? Do you really think even odds are fair when one side is all experienced players in HACs and the other is brand new pvp pilots flying t1 frigs? There's more to "even fights" than numbers and to focus so much on the number of pilots is vastly over-simplifying things.

20 to 1? According to your killboard, we only outnumbered you 2 to 1 when we attacked your gatecamp in ec-p8r that time. (Let's not count the other engagements that show up on that screen; nobody who knows Pure Blind would suspect for a moment that Mordus Angels was a part of our gang.)
Video of that engagement can be downloaded here. Funny how the video claims Shara El's ship as a loss....
But yeah, your killboard does seem to show whether Agony knows what it's doing or not.
