Originally by: Patch86 I know its not actually helpful at all, but I'm against gaming laptops, on principal. You can get a desktop literally twice as powerful than a laptop of the same price, and with games being all about the power of your hardware above all else, it just doesn't make sense to get a laptop for gaming.
With laptops you're paying through the teeth for it to be small and portable. Since I can't imagine settling in to play SupCom on a train or what have you, I don't see the point.
/end rant. If you ARE getting a games machine, processor is all important. Don't skimp.
I play everything on my laptop--its much faster than my desktop and far, far more useful.
Not only does it mean I can play anywhere in my house, it means I can play on the bus, at school, wherever--even if I didn't game outside of the house it would mean I'd have to buy a seperate laptop just for non-gaming.
If I got a PC for the same price with the same features, I could have gotten about a 20% faster CPU and a 7950 instead of a 7700. That's about it. I think the extra money is worth the portability, by far.
On the other hand, if you're not willing to spend at least like 1500 dollars, do not buy a gaming laptop.
I guess its a matter of taste as much as anything. I'd much rather game sitting at my desk then I would on my sofa or such; using my GF's laptop in all sorts of places, I'm just not as comfortable.
And seeing what you get for your money on the web for laptops atm (just helped my sister buy a laptop a couple of weeks ago; to my dismay, Dell had the best model in her price range so she went with that ), I know I could do a fair few ú100 better building my own desktop. And a few ú100 i nothing to sniff at.
Well I almost never play on anything but a desk--its just that I often play on many different desks
Im afraid dark that in my experience patch86 is right. I won my laptop in a benchmarking competition otherwise i wouldnt have it, however the overclocking i did to win it led to me nuking a stick of ram when i undervoltaged it again. Since my rma is taking so long (should be done this week!) i have been using my laptop for everything and i can without a doubt say that my desktop is faster, much faster. I could have spent alot less money building my pc and it would still have been quicker and yet my laptop cannot get alot better.
I see what your saying but if you want the most efficient 'bang for ya buck' then a desktop is the only way to go.
