I'm flying a Cormorant at the moment and I quite like it. I've got 11.5 million ISK and have just completed Caldari Battleship training. I can't decide whether to save up for a Battlecruiser (69 million ISK IIRC for the cheapest one) or go for something cheaper in the interim.
I'm after a ship with a large cap and good defences. I'm not sure whether I should go for something with launcher turrets, railguns or energy weapons. Which would be best? Any advice on the best ship for my money would be appreciated. There are just too many to choose from

If that is only the price for the ship itself I would strongly recommend to go to a market hub like jita or rens, because whereever you are the market is slightly overpriced.

Oops I didn't mean Battlecruiser, I meant Battleship. Even in Jita a Scorpion is 55mil. I can't decide whether to save up another 44mil (which would take ages) and get the Scorpion, or get something else in the interim (any suggestions?)

The Drake looks like a nice ship. Bit slow but I guess you can't have everything Thanks for the advice! Not sure about doing level 3 missions AFK - sounds dangerous. But I'm sure the Drake will make tougher missions much easier. Does getting a better ship "unlock" better agents and missions?

Cormorant to Battleship is a big jump. I am assuming that you are flying missions.
Firstly you should decide whether you want to specialise in missiles or railguns. (Hint: Missiles are better for missions.)
Next you should fly level 2 missions in a caracal until you can afford either a ferox or a drake. Use something like the following setup.
Highs 5 x Heavy Missiles (with rat specific missiles)
Mids 10mn AB Medium Shield Booster (C5-L or Tech II) Medium shield extender (FS-9 or Tech II) 2 x rat specific active hardeners
Lows 2 x Power Diagnostic Units
Next do level 3s Ferox or a Drake, the ferox is about half the cost, but has a worse tank and can only fit 5 missiles instead of 7 and gets no bonuses. It will however get you into level 3s sooner, so you will make money faster and get into the drake earlier.
You will need to fit a passive tank to both, so heavy missiles in the highs, shield extenders, rat specific hardeners and perhaps an AB in the mids. In the low slots ballistic control systems, power diagnostic units and shield charge relays (these nerf your cap recharge btw).
When you can do level 4s and afford it get a Raven. Use something resembling the following setup:
Highs 6 x Cruise Missile Launchers
Mids X-Large Shield Booster (C5-L or Tech II) 3 Rat specific Hardeners Large Shield Extender (FS-9 or Tech II) Shield Boost Amplifier
Lows A mix of Power Diagnostic System, Ballistic Control System and perhaps an Emergency Damage Control
You can also use your beloved Cormorant to salvage your level 4s and level 3s :p (highly recommended).
Just fit 4 salvagers and 4 tractor beams in the highs, and an AB in a mid slot, the rest cap rechargers.

Look at the bonuses on the ship, then look at what weapons you're skilled in, and match the one to the other. Caldari basically have three lines of ships:
Gunboats: Merlin->Cormorant->Moa->Ferox->Rokh Missiles: kestrel->caracal->drake->raven Ewar: griffin->blackbird->scorpion
The missiles line is generally easier for PvE. I would not reccomend going straight from a destroyer to a battleship without flying a criuser in the middle, so get a caracal. It doesn't directly unlock new missions but will be ideal for l2 missions.

The agent and mission levels are purely related to your standing to that agent and his corp. By doing missions you'll increase standing, and higher quality ones raise standing more. The skills Connections and other social skill increase standing directly, or the rate at which you gain it. Get connections II and you'll be able to do lvl 2s or even lvl 3s.
For level 2's, the suggested Caracel is an excellent choice, but i'd even go as far as equipping it with 3 or even 5 Assault missile launchers instead, since you'll meet 80% frigates in level 2's. :)
If you dont have Bombardment and Projection III you might run into problems in a select few instances where Assault wont reach the target, else those + 3 small drones = extremely fast lvl 2 runner. :)

Thanks very much for all the advice! I'll go for a Caracal and start training the skills I need for L2 missions.

I used heavy missiles on the caracal for the range. Basically you can stay away from most of the frigs nd a void taking damage given that the caracal is made from paper.
Once Apollo gets bombardment, projection and caldari cruiser (10% bonus to missile velocity per level ftw) to 3/4 he could probably fit three assault launchers (cheap) and he wil be getting 40-50km. The light missiles should pwn frigs.
Also Apollo, try to use the best possible agents. You can find agents by clicking on your current agent's info, going to the standings tab and clicking on his faction's info (e.g. caldari navy).
The faction tab has a list of agends sorted by their standings requirements, and seperated by which ones you have access to. You should always try to use better agents be cause better agents give better rewards and more loyalty points.

Edited by: Brutus Proqqus on 30/05/2007 07:04:48 I would go for the caracal.
Fit it with this: 5 Limos Heavy Missile Launchers 10 mn AB Medium Shield Extender Med Shield Booster Sensor Booster I Invulnerability Shield I 2 BCS's in the lows
Warp in at 70km, turn on your Invu and Sensor booster and lock + spam. Dont forget to launch drones and try to run the AB and keep the rats at around 50km. You should be taking no dmg and you can take every single lvl 2 mission in this setup. For missions where you are being ambushed like in the blockade or Cargo Delivery/The Damsel in distress just jetison a can bookmark it and warp out. Then warp back in at 70 km.
Once you got enuf standing to run a lvl 3 agent with decent quality (i use a Q15 agent myself) buy a drake and fit it with good named stuff or tech 2. Also replace the limos launchers with either arbies or XR3200's or something like that. You should be able to take on any lvl 3 if you got decent tanking skills. Take Shield Upgrades, Management, Operation and Tactical Shield Manipulation to 4.
Then you're about a the same point as where i am. I'm just grinding the lvl 3s now and am almost at 8 standing with caldari navy. I'm crosstraining to amarr now since caldari is BORING and i want to fly some other ships. Once i get like 150 mil i might buy a raven or maybe ill have enuf LP for a CNR then. Ill just get the skills to use torps then, i got most of the tanking stuff already so.
Anyway thats what i did/ am gonna do.
Oh btw this is my alt, dunno why it keeps changing back to it. My main is Pr0qz0r, go to inEve.net and look for my char there. You can see what skills you need to run a lvl 3. The only mission i had to warp out so far was the blockade, cuz i ran out of ammo.
