Please forgive me mentioning either WoW, Blizzard or goldfarmers but today Blizzard announced on their forums they are taking steps to sue the american branch of a well known goldfarmer that keeps harrassing their WoW players. For on topic stuff. The services of this goldfarmer also include things that are bannable in Eve.
ps. if this post is inappropriate my sincerest apologies, I just happen to like the good news |

if they manage to set a legal precedent, then they can throw their weight around with ebay and companies hosting gold sellers a little more. good news imo.

This may have interesting precedent for EVE.
For those interested, the company being sued is Peons4Hire, which is probably known by anyone who's played 5 minutes of WoW as they have macros that spam everyone on the server with ads for their "service."

Aye, but note they are being not being sued for farming. The lawsuit, if successful, will require them to "immediately cease all in-game spamming efforts by all entities and websites under their control."

Advertising is lifeblood. For these guys, the damage is done, people who will use the service know they're out there, but for the most part, this is precedent for the future. This gives companies the impetus to cut off their ability to make themselves known ingame.
God know EVE has enough spammers in its public channels.

eBay some time ago stopped allowing the sales of any virtual goods of any sort, be they in-game items, currency. land or characters/accounts. I think they decided that with all the confusion and controversy surrounding such sales, as well as all the different Ts&Cs about who owns what in all the myriad virtual worlds, it wasn't worth the aggravation. That was a pretty big blow right there. -------------

there seem to be a heck of a lot of MMO related sales still up there, from macros thru ships.

EVE doesn't have the financial clout that Blizzard has, at best CCP can make their lives difficult.

Best one I saw was a guy offering to sell a Parker ballpoint pen (With a free gift of an Eve account)
The lengths people will go to to avoid the rules are amazing.

Thats an age old scalper trick for tickets; pay $200 for a hockey puck, and you get free playoffs tickets.

I just wonder why Blizzard didn't simply ban Chinese IP's from logging into the EU and US games. A simply whois check on most of the gold seller sites reveals the fact that they are Chinese operated, and banning by IP would at least curb most of their activity.
A lawsuit against peons4hire won't work for that matter i suspect, since they don't actually operate in the US.

err... because the problem isn't that chinese people play eve, but that gold farmers are able to sell iskies on ebay?

Quit with the racial comments!
Just because you see gold/isk farmers doesn't mean they are Chinese. Why ban an entire race of people just because of the actions of a few? It's like banning all cable and wireless users because a few got caught buying isk.

Race != Nationality
Please stop confusing race with nationality. Blocking a country has nothing to do with a "race". There is no Chinese "race." It is a nationality, not a race.
I'll give you an example. Recently, Russia was DDOSing Estonia's government websites.
So they rangeblocked all of Russia on their top-level routers. Nobody thought there was anything unreasonable about it.
The reason a rangeblock won't work for an MMORPG is that they'll use proxies.

Drizit, i'm not partial to any race - The fact of the matter is, gold farming and botting itself in general is done in China for a good part. Check whois.net on most of the spammer sites and you'll see they're based in China - It's a simple matter of common sense to block their IP ranges from logging in, after all, they have their own, local servers.
DS, even if they would start to use proxies, at least there would be a slight or even significant drop for at least a short while in spamming and botting, and it will hinder them somewhat if they have to use proxies anyway - Ever tried to use proxies while already using thousands of proxies? :P

Causing a significant drop in gold farmers for a short while is far from productive. If anything just like using antibiotics everywhere makes bacteria more resistant, blocking China's IP ranges makes goldfarmers harder to identify.
I wouldn't imagine it would be difficult at all for the US sellers here to set up private low-latency proxies for their farms in China. You'd be surprised how efficient China's workers can be if not making those 4 dollars a day means not eating.
Unlike the movie and music industry which has no clue that DRM doesn't work, I'm sure Blizzard has does know IP range bans doesn't stop gold farming.
