what is the point of eve pvp?!
have been sitting here wondering about it.
because it's not very good at anything. it's not gaining isk. it's not really fun for any of the partiest (unless your lucky enough to hit a fight which is even, and how oftend does that happend ) because it's either a we win garenteed or we lose with garante.
so what is the gain?
one part loses a ship, which is a pain to get back if your tutling around in 0.0 and not in a big alliance out there (which can still be a pain even when you are). the other part gets a VERY little gain compared to the first parts loss. normally it's a "i win/lose" situation, so the fun is at its minimum and there is nothing that makes any of the parties really smile or think "that was some great pvp fun".
it seems that even though eve says its a pvp game it does anything it can't to prevent the pvp. every aspect of the pvp is really just a losing situation, even when you win it's normally the we win garenteed situation which is not fun at all.
there is only one thing i can see as exciting or two: first of you can be lucky and get a even match where it's the skill and setup (not the ship and modules) that makes you win or lose, which can give a very fun exciting fight. and then there is the thrill of what your gonna meet when you get to it. (which mostly if it's not the gatecamp and a parti where you mostly know whats there because you have used an alt as suicide check then its belts where you have scanned it.)
this is how i have seen it over the last couple of years and all they seem to do is making gatecamps easyer and more luxus to do and the penalty for anything else much more harsh. and ofcause making blob fighting tactic more lucrative too.. ___________________________________________ Humans take everything that is beautiful and sweet and turn it into something horrifying and ugly.

the point of pvp is to fight and have fun while doing it. I still get excited before a battle and in your focus sharpens and your senses heighten and the battlefield comes alive. Heart rate goes up and i love it .
That's the point of pvp to me anyway

In my opinion, there is no point in playing a game to begin with, except having fun. Therefore the only "point" of PvP should be to have fun. If for you, it's not fun, there is no point in pvping.

the isk is exstremely bad considering risk/reward.
Originally by: Chewan Mesa > > You can fight outnumbered and still win, so you dont need even numbers.
if you look at the isk compared then no you can't... unless you attack some poor noob which have no idea what they are doing, else it's all about the isk amount put into the ship, and even here it's still the bigger the better which decides.
Originally by: Chewan Mesa > > It often is not a "sure" victory or defeat, it might look that way afterwards, but that doesnt mean people dont enjoy the actual fight, hence the outcome is not certain.
after 5 secunds(when the tanking starts), you mostly know without doubt if you win or lose.
Originally by: Chewan Mesa > > "Winning" a fight is fun in itself, if it isnt for you, well duuh.
whats the fun thing of winning a "fixed" fight O.o .... i think it's only the weak that things a victory is the same nomatter who it was against. strong people see NO joy in destroying the weak, but finds joy in fighting an equel.

i am not talking about the isk, but with all the enforcing of the gatecamp and all the easy to do bottoms they have put in, it's just a plague having to go back into high/low sec to get a new ship and then back out though the camps again

my point:)
in this game there is a VERY little procent of the community that really feels this fun about the pvp, and the rest is just here trying to figure out why they should even go into pvp.
we do you think that almost all pvp done in this game is done by "people want to fight, jumping people that do whatever they can to get away from the fight" ?!
the system for the pvp should be altered so people all wanted to fight and that you didnt have to catch some one to get them to fight, but so they willingly would like to take on the charge.

As has been said, if you don't enjoy it, you don't have to do it. Clearly there are many people in this game that enjoy the PvP.
And you should note that for a lot of these people, it is fun because you can inflict pain and loss on the other people, and lose ships yourself. If you have never PvP'd, you won't likely know that in a lot of cases, especially the first few times you do it, or in fights that are looking bad for you, or have great importance to the outcome of a war, the adrenaline gets pumping around your body. That alone increases the fun, because you're sitting there shaking and really doing everything you can to survive and win.
The loss is big in alliance warfare as well. Moving past the territory, which is the reason for the battles in the first place, you can only beat an alliance by removing their will to fight. And what better way to do that than kill them enough so they have no ISK and ships, with no choice to move back to empire to sulk and rebuild their wallets.
Some people will never like the way EVE PvP works, because they want a more fair, balanced and sporting type of game. But then there is the other side, where people fight to win, kill, destroy, and generally be huge bastards.
But my main advice here is not to start bashing EVE's PvP till you've tried it. Even seemingly "fixed" unfair fights in your favour can get the blood pumping, and the nerves high. You never know when the enemy might suddenly spring a trap on you and the tables are turned, and you are doing everything you can to get your butt out of there and plan for revenge.

Edited by: Buyerr on 30/05/2007 10:44:33 first of i have a very little injoyment in the pvp of eve. secund i have been in the gamer for a very long time (posting with an alt right no, of course) and i have been in some of the biggest alliance, i have killed a ton of people and been killed a ton of times.
so this is why i can say what i have seen as good and bad, and as you say "some people like to inflict pain" well the problem is that no one likes to be inflicted upon and you are inflicting a exstreme amount of pain compared to your gain, which when it all comes down to it will be bad in the long run.
i can see the point of this in a war since this is where both parts are trying to destroy the other parts existance ingame, and if they quit, well perfect for the winning side (and quitting for them would be to leave there corps to get out of the agro "zone")
but for players that is NOT in a war, the only way to quit is to actually quit the game. and well i think that it is sad that there should be so much focus on trying to let the VERY few people have fun on the behalf of the many...
i have been there as a youngster, where it was okey that i got something even if it means that more then one other have to suffer for it. but now when i am grown up i kind of realise that it's wrong to let a bunch of people suffer just so one person can get a gain..
well fairness is not something that is in the game right now, neither is morale... which is sad... but the point is pvp is not reenforcing itself by beeing fun, but by forcing people to be a part of it, which means that if your not up for pvp at a certain time the only thing to do is quit the game...
i see that as a problem
ps: yes it really gets the bloob pumping every time, but most of the time it leves me with the feeling of nothing or irritation and lameness(if thats even a word hehe) i would like to have a happy feeling or a feeling of fun afterwoods even if i don't win

Actually EVE's pvp is one of the best i seen so far, and i played quite a lot mmorgs so far. Expecially the thing that you can lose a lot in a battle makes it exciting, even fo the vets (expecially in their caps) ... if you want to see what dull pvp is go tho that 2839843 mmmorgs where you don't lose anything when being killed. You should be more precise on what exactly you want to be changed and give a proposal how it should be, then we can discuss.

Sorry, not true. I've had several fights where I were loosing. Then, during the fight, i changed tactic slightly, and won. Also had the "sure win" battles and still lost. You have only lost if you say to your self "oh frak, i'm dead" because then you stop doing anything and just wait for the bang.
OP: You are looking at the single random encounter or common gate camp. What about alliance fights, territorial conquest and all that.. PvP don't have to be "this ship against that ship".
But to be honest, the best and most fun PvP fights I've ever experienced have been RP battles. There the fights are usual "equal" and everyone are set on fighting.

I was told the other day that station can camping in high sec is PvP... I laughed and kicked the person from my corp...
I have no problem with pvp, not my thing and I'd rather stear clear of it personally, but the wanton destruction of new players in starter areas like Kisogo and Chavez(?) is crazy and unless your wardecced, no player killing should be allowed in high sec at all...
Simple option to stop the can camping? stop others cans from being opened in high sec...

yer i know, but as you know its VERY hard to say "this is the thing". as i have seen untill now two major things would really be helpfull.
first and most importent, a dmg stacking penalty, focusing fire really needs to be nerfed big time, with this i mean that if ships at same size as you fires at you then the more that fires at you the less dps you will take from each exstra firering at you (which psychicolly makes sense). this would help alot with the pvp..
secoundly: the controll system of the ship, we need to have control over the ship we are in, flying it with the doubble clicking just works really bad in alot of situations, we need to get the a,s,d,w, speed up/down, controls in, so we can chose if we want to actually fly the ship ourself (if it is a chose then in laggi situation you just chose by maybe "tab" to release the control and have it like now..
these two major things would let your skills come into account..
to let people deside if they want to be a part of the pvp today this is what we need: high sec=you can't lock any non war/corp targets (simply concord have you perma jammed). low sec= concord sentry's times 100dmg (or something like that instant killing anything and breaking even cap tanks in a short time). and a ransome system which grantz the abillity for immunity to player/corp/alliance for x timerate, if payid x isk. 0.0= well i don't really want to do much to 0.0 only one thing i would like, maybe a random spawning place when jumping though a gate or just put it so you can land anywhere within 100km of the gate (by this maybe not making gatecamps impossible but making it possible to get though them unless people have a variety of ship types spread around the gate,) would get people to go there alot more. ' ___________
one more altering is to alter the destroyid modules. modules should not dissapier, but just need to be repaired, by this the gain is alot higher... and a system that lets you decide if you want to kill the ship of make it useless(just a bottom that says kill/disarm. if disarming you can't selfdestuct, your weaponry does half dps to show your arming to not destroy the ship, when ship normally would die, the pilot is just forced out of it and can not enter it in 15minutes) this would do two things. first of, making it more profitable to be a pirate that overpowers a enemy secoundly, let people test out there skills on each others without the properbillity of destroying each others due to lag+other.
well this owuld help

have made some suggestions on how to alter it abit for the better of all (well alliance fights and wars etc are usually with there own point and reason, so i don't see a problem in them, they are just fine, because people in them are there too fight. although focus fire is a problem there)

EvE PvP is whatever ya make it. If ya don't like large gang blobs then don't get involved in them.
I've been having plenty of 1 on 1 fights in Sobaseki and they're proving a good laugh, sometimes (often) they're just frig battles, others cruiser fights or 1 on 1 battlecruiser bashes. I have Darkness Inc to thank for providing some much needed entertainment over the last couple of weeks.
and I make plenty of ISK PvPing, at lest enough to keep me in ships and modules. End of the day it's all about fun, whichever way ya wanna fight.

I stopped reading after this, you dont appear to know what you are on about. PVP is about beating the other player and taking his stuff. If all the above is true for you then you need to reapproach how you do it.

If you don't want to do PVP in Eve, you don't have to. Just stay in noobland. There are still pvp situations in noobland, like, well, the whole market.
It does look like there is much more gain from PVP in the alliance end of things. The fighting itself may not result in much gain but the area control allows moon mining, access to plexes etc which in turn results in vast financial gain.
That's the point.
If the balance of any fight is not tilted grossly towards you, you messed up somehow. There is no fairness in Eve, only power.

Eve hands down has one of the best pvp systems out there, it is not generally my cup of tea, i am just too nice to wanna go around trying to gank people, gate camp, or ransom noobs for isk.
But eve's system over any other mmo where you put countless hours into battle grounds for little risk and if your good or lucky after countless hours you get some trinkets or silly titles, plus in other mmos pvping is more about gear then skill, and to some degree teamwork when talking bgs.
Granted in eve you need a boatload of skills trained to be effective, but few pvpers are gonna risk l33t named faction mods or ships pvping so if you pvp you are forced to use t2s or normal ships/mods. So instead of eve being all about gear it is more about skill and knowing the strengths and weaknesses of what you are fighting and using them to your advantage when possible.
And lets not forget that pvp in eve is also about control when talking corps and defending or taking space as their own. So in comparison to other mmos pvp in eve can actually mean something, if you are gonna ever get a pos in low sec you darn well better be ready to defend it.
Where other mmos you win you loose it really does not mean a whole heck of alot in the end other than you loose or miss some faction points or bragging rights.
I think if you think hard about other mmos versus eve in pvp terms eve comes out miles ahead of most any other game out there.

A - You're proposing stacking damage from different ships. This doesn't make sense - damage is damage, and firepower coordination just signifies good leadership. It's silly to force group combat to be a number of separate 1vs1 engagements. Eve isn't meant to be fair. It's meant to enable larger groups (of lower SP players, even) to overcome smaller groups if they get the jump on them. Maybe if you want to make 30+mil SP players with command ships solo-pwn-mobiles, it would serve that purpose.
B - Manual control is OK, but doesn't really change anything significant, and in laggy situations you'd get terrible results. Double-clicking works when you get used to it, so while I don't really have anything against manual ship control, I don't see it as a must-have feature.
C - Being permajammed in high sec as you suggest means two things: (1) - Everyone can freely steal from me and I can't do a damn thing. Unless it's not only war dec/corp targets but also normal aggro targets. (2) - It's great help to the AFK players (and you should NOT play EVE AFK and count on being 100% safe) and, more interestingly, the MacroMiner mini-profession. Maybe you've got a specific interest in helping macrominers?
D - Having instakill turrets at low-sec gates doesn't make any sense, because it's preety much eliminating 95% of piracy. If you eliminate all the pirates, then where's the challenge of going to low-sec? Who would you PvP against then, anyway? What's the risk of low-sec?
E - Having modules not destroyed would be a crippling blow to *any* industrialist, and the miners, as well. And mission-runners (everyone who makes/loots modules), since the same modules would *stay* in circulation preety much indefinitely. That's probably the most idiotic idea around. A high-sec industrialist must love pirates/PvP-ers by definition, because it's pirates who create customers for them. The effects on economy would be really, really bad. Plus, ransoms would be more expensive, since the pirates would know they would get more loot if they blew you up, so they'd demand more cash not to kill you.
F - Nobody, I mean NOBODY would use the disarm option in a real fight. Doing half the DPS means you'll most likely lose unless you really overpower the opponent by an insane margin and then some. In a 1vs1 or even a 2vs1, nobody sane would use disarm. Especially if you'd get all the modules from killing the guy.
In short, your suggestions show your extreme lack of understanding of PvP and game economics. Don't moan for the game to be changed to something that would suit your needs specifically - and even if it did, it'd do you more harm then good.

If Eve PvP makes your heart pound you've probably had to many twinkies in front of your monitor

No need for feeling sorry, at least we dont have to go sky diving to get an adrenaline kick.

Edited by: Johho Bulon on 31/05/2007 08:48:00 Edited by: Johho Bulon on 31/05/2007 08:47:44 I'd just like to add on to this, I am a noob, 3 weeks gameplay in total. And only a couple of nights ago had my first PvP experience, when off to collect a purchase in low sec. All went well until I left the station with the goods, and before I could react I was bumped by two battleships, both were flickering red on my side bar, they then targeted me jammed my warp core and began to rain missiles on my ship. Man it was exciting, I targeted back and prepared to activate my webber and close to blaster range, when I saw that my armour was being shredded, despite my passives and dc. I had to do what any decent person would, I ran away and docked back in the station :P Even that was thrilling, I had no idea if I would get away, or if they would sit outside the station waiting for me. When I docked I had about 2% of my armour hp left. All I know is that my decision an hour earlier to buy and fit a 1600mm plate to my Thorax saved the day, and I loved it.
So what is the point of PVP? I think it speaks for itself, but I'll tell you anyhow. I was no match for those guys and I still managed to get away and keep my stuff for another day. It may be sad but I felt excited and pleased with myself that I had managed that. And the next hour as my new corp mates came from far afield to scout the system, bring warp stabilizers to help me get out and bring battleships of our own to the field was tense and exciting stuff. It is exactly this sort of thing that I hoped for when I began to play, uncertainty, doubt, adrenaline, excitement and having to make live or die split second decisions.
