Edited by: Lidza on 10/01/2004 09:10:55 Ive latelly noticed EVE client goes up fast in memory usage growing from 98Mb until 170mb (8bits per second). No wonder my XP was every 3/4 hours complaining with low virtual memory, EVE crashing to desktop and no wonder why the game was so "jumpy".
When we would have a stable EVE client side?
BTW is everyone feeling the same or its just me?
Many thanks

I will load up system monitor when I play next but I do not have any symptoms of a leak on my WIN98SE build. Well Windows leaks a bunch but that is given Anyway, I can play eve for a good 8 hours straight and not ctd. Maybe im just lucky. I am loading up XP with weekend though so we will see how that does. Oh, and this weekend is Sunday-Tuesday for me Spelling corrections welcome, but don't expect me to edit my post. |

max 768Mb of swap... of course that 200Mb of swap is good enough to have a slow system and less than that to have a "jumpy" game

Haven't had an Eve-related memory leaks for a while now.
Eve.exe tends to use around 300MB of memory after 7 or 8 hours continuous play but that's not so bad - I have 1.5Gb of RAM and a 1.5GB swap file.

I have 512MB DDR PC2700 installed at the moment and have my swap set to "let windows control" yes I know this is BADDDD but hey, it works for my current set up. Spelling corrections welcome, but don't expect me to edit my post. |

I use a program to monitor and eventually solve this, the program is called Cacheman 5.50 and you can download it here:

My Vertual Memory is 1.5GBs, and still I get flooded with CTDs and BLACK Screen of death if I play over 5hrs. Why spend time FIXING the problem when you can spend time with the SPIN DR. making new advertisements to sell the game?

I run eve in win xp. seems to me that if you run eve in win 98 combiability it runs more stable. are you using the jukebox in eve.? cause that use lots of memory

WRONG, to have a modern game, any game fully flawless functioning needs at LEAST 1500mb of vram/swap file, i have it set to 2000mb and never have no probs no matter what i do

win xp professional, 512mb ddr sdram, very stable can run two instances normally without much of a hitch. Never get CTDs unless "sun occluded by ships" is checked.

Edited by: Atrioss on 10/01/2004 20:11:33 Heh, you don't need to have a virtual memory setting which exceeds the amount of physical RAM that is installed on the system. You can set the amount of allocated virtual memory to be half of, or equal to the amount of physical RAM in the system. This will be more than suffiecient to run these kinds of applications.
It's important to defragment the hard disk frequently. The swap file will become fragmented along with the rest of the data on the hard drive, and this can cut down on performance. This is the case now more than ever, because the average size of the swap file has increased.
In ideal circumstances, you'd want a swap file that is smaller than the physical amoun of RAM in the system, so that you would force the system to use more physical memory. This would keep the O/S from farming out more tasks to the slower hard drive.
Of course, everyone manages their computer differently, so altering the size of the swap file for one user may have much different results for another user who tries to use the same values.
For me I set the swap file to a value which is equal to the amount of physical RAM in my system. I don't run any other apps in the background. I use 98SE with 512Mb of RAM, and everthing's fine. I still use a GeForce3 card, and am able to use max detail settings.
As far as compatability of EVE with various O/Ss? I think it's a crapshoot because everyone installs different files onto their computers, which can affect other applications that are installed on the system in a variety of ways.
One thing that still seems to hold true about computers is that they run better for longer periods of time when they have less tasks to perform.

I have tried many different settings to stop crash to desk top and insta reboots. I think it has more to do with the vid card than with memory. I have 2 computers , Puter 1 is an alienware 3.0 intel chip with 1.5 gigs of rambus memory and radeon 9800 pro with 128 megs. There was a patch before caster before this patch i could run 2 instances of eve in windowed mode very reliably after the patch nothing but problems also virtual memory is set twice that of physical memory. Ok puter 2 is a homebuilt box 2.4 AMD , 1 gig DDR memory , nvidia 256 meg geforce 5600. Ok Arguably the Radeon is a better card but has half the memory of the way cheaper 5600 but this set up runs much more reliably than the radeon equipped puter. I also notice problems seem to be linked to mining and the amount of chatter in the chat chanel , for instance the trade chanel seems to cause CTD. Bottom line I really think these problems are more related to the type of vid card one has. I am alos going to try Cao Cao sugggestion of unchecking ship occluded by sun, Thanks for the suggestion Cao Cao
