Tolerance, as defined by today's society, is about ignoring our conscience for the sake of someone else's errant lifestyle to the point that we accept it as "ok". I don't want to get dragged into a moral discussion here, especially about homosexuality (mainly because I don't want the mods jumping on me). But what I will say in reply is this; despite what society would like to believe today in all it's relativistic humanist glory, there is still something called right and wrong. Humanity has grown weary of guilt for it's misdeeds, and as a result has stopped attempting to deal with something that is "wrong". It now tries to convince those that believe something is "wrong" that they are wrong for believing it to be wrong.
Hopefully there's enough in there to disclose my position (in regard to your quote) in a non-offensive way.

are you a creationist or something?
the question you should be asking, is why you even care if a couple of blokes want to bang each other's brains out?

You keep calling me a bigot, whatever you gotta do to rationalize my belief that people ARE NOT REQUIRED TO BE TOLERANT.
I don't have to accept you, I don't have to like you, I don't want to hug and be friends. It's not a goddamn requirement of me just because society says so.
I don't go out of my way to make friends with people from different cultures, I like mine fine and I don't want or need anything more. I don't care for multicultural festivals, crap like that. Going to call me a racist? I just don't care about other cultures.
Hell, I may even decide I don't like a culture, purely based on an ideal they hold. Perhaps they worship a symbol I don't like, perhaps they're Muslims? Christians?, etc.
I don't have to be accepting of everyone around me.
Edit: Few other things.
So, you believe one thing, and you believe I'm wrong.. so I'm stupid correct?
I believe something different, I believe you COULD be wrong, so I'm a bigot?
So, you're allowed to have beliefs, I'm allowed to have beliefs, but they have to be in the same frame of mind as yours.
Hey man, I'll hate on homosexuals all I want, you keep on hating on me for it and thinking you're so righteous.
Meh, Archie Bunker knew what was going on.
I'm sure you will go on being intolerant. Why would you need to be accepting? I can't think of a rational, reasonable or dignified reason for that Get your hand of your spitoon.

Aw you funnie guy! What connntry u from? If you happen to be an American (and many Godless European ones across the pond), not only are you required in many situations including the workplace to tolerate a good variety of people, but also show no discrimination. Oh yeah. That is worse than just tolerating. Showing no discrimnation. I hate this place.
And who thought of this brilliant idea? It started with the 14th amendment to the US Constitution in 1868. And then a lotta big wigs (those jokers call themselves US Supreme Court Justices) decided that some thing called the Due Process clause should apply to a variety of people. I know, I don't think black people should have rights at all either. That wouldn't be Suuhthern-liike.
Now not only are you required to show no discrimination on the basis of race and color but also none on the basis of nationality, ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation and religion whether you're an employee, employer, business proprietor, property renter or seller, and more. And to think of it! Companies actually are PROUD to say they don't discriminate! It's unfair I know! Doze crazee liberals! They're been teaching your children this! Close their ears! Confederacy Forever!
No, but really, an executive order passed in 1998 added the sexual orientation protection. And that has stood up in the US courts of law. I'd figure you were an American cuz only an American can be as intolerant as you are. There are many places left where you can discriminate and be intolerant, but homosexuals now enjoy the same legal protections as the other minorities.
You may think it's unfair. Thankfully the liberal media is changing the mind of our children so old-time intolerance will be frowned upon in the years to come. It's worked before and probably will work again. But atleast succession is out of the question. The religious 'morally superior' states cannot survive economically without the educated 'godless' ones. You (or your children) listen to what the educated elite say, and we'll keep paying for your infrastructure, schools and welfare. Improving the condition of the less well-to-do states is something both sides of the aisle agree on. I've rarely heard a liberal say being kind is a bad thing.

The problem with arguing with Christians, particularly the right wing flavour, is when every avenue of argument has been covered, they proclaim it a matter of faith and to be honest you'll never persuade somebody who is happy to blindly believe that something is correct otherwise. That's not a dig at christians either. Blind unflinching belief is the Christian definition of faith.
If they start admitting that their church's teachings could be flawed in some way, they're basically admitting that god is fallible and imperfect. which is a bad thing for them since god's omnipotent perfection is very much what they're not about in the first place.
Hilariously, call they narrow minded bigots worshipping a fictional character and you'll be called religiously intolerant and hellbound. Suggest they're intolerant towards homosexuals and you're a heretic and hellbound. I'm not sure what happens if you support a different football team to them, but i'm guessing it's warm.
and yes, i'm sure one of them will petition me for this and i'll get hit in the balls with the banstick, but this post isn't designed to rile anybody in particular. just point out how facing off logic and faith is never going to work. They're too very different animals, and most Christians are smart enough to realise this and separate them.
Look at it like this, who wrote the 'King James Bible'. God?

Why would you even try to argue with a Christian when you know that they hold their faith so close to their heart? That's seems like you're being cruel and pretentious. I'm an atheist, but I don't force my opinion on others, as I would hate it when others do it to me.

pretentious, moi?
i'm not being cruel or pretentious. i was raised a Christian in Christian Schools and taught lots of neat stuff about God. my family are Christian too, but i happen to have slightly different beliefs to them. my description of faith is in line with most Christian teaching.
i did edit the text slightly before you responded, but that's not important. the point is the same. you can't argue religion with somebody who has absolute faith in what they believe. i think you probably missed the point.

There are laws against discrimination in many western countries.
If you feel so strongly you should try and eliminate groups you disagree with. This is part of what public censure and rabble-rousing is, no?
I'd much rather a bigot that tries to kill me than one who mutters in corners and gives nasty looks. The former is more honest and easier to deal with.

Anyhow, it sounds a little like the whole native American "animal spirit" thing. Is it like that, or am I misunderstanding? --------

Its perfectly legal to hate anyone you choose for whatever reason. If you try to make it illegal to be a bigot you're getting into thought crimes.

Yes, but it's illegal to discriminate in many situations.
It's practically impossible to stop someone discriminating as long as they don't make it blatantly obvious though. I'm sure you already know this.

This has descended into discussion of religion and politics and I don't see any way that this can continue constructively.
