Hi fellow Yarrfolks.
Not sure if this should be in C&P or Ships & Mods, its a bit of both.
Yesterday I bolted an MWD on my Rifter for the first time and started orbiting some cans to figure out the best way of transversal vs. speed, and the best ratio of inertia stabs to nanofibers.
And I noticed something. Once I set "orbit 2500m" to some can and my ship orbits cleanly at 2500m and at roughly 1400m/sec in some kind of circle. But I never achieved this again. Most of the time with the same fitting, the Rifter orbits in some kind of egg-like orbit, going up and down between 800m/sec and 1400m/sec.
Anyone else noticed that? Is there any trick to getting a proper orbit arround something and not have speed drop because the ship "overshoots" and slows down to turn? Or is the algorythm for that just borked and the outcome pretty random?
Thanks
edit:
p.s. I DO understand inertia and all and that it can't orbit at full speed at 500m, and that the faster you go the more it carries you outwards. I just wanna know how/if I can reliably get a "clean" orbit at max speed (for a given orbit radius).

Yes i had similar issue with my Crow i wud set an orbit and then with MWD i wud far overshoot and pull much wider orbit. Its ok tho im not a inty pilot for pvp i use it more as a shuttle

Yeah, I noticed that too. The orbit sometimes gets bigger (like up to 3,5 km) which is not nice, but kinda okay for me. But in any case I wanna stay over 1200m/sec and within 4 km. It seems that it can do this in general from the inertia/speed formula, but that often the orbit algorythm generates this egg-shaped orbit and puts me under 800m/sec which is bad(tm)

The ship slows down when orbiting at close ranges due to inertia - it can't turn that fast at that speed, so the orbit is widened and speed dropped slightly; however I've never had the egg like orbit before.
If you approach someone with the MWD on and then select orbit, it will take a few seconds to get the orbit right, but should sort itself out eventually. -----

The only way i can imagine this happenning is if you come in too fast and overshoot, and then when you turn around and come back towards your target to orbit it you pick up too much speed and overshoot again. If this is repeated it would give an egg shaped orbit

Hm okay I might try reducing speed on approach before I enter orbit, then firing up the MWD again. Maybe thats what I did the one time when it worked as it should. Cheers :)

Sadly it didn't. Not for 90 seconds or so, thats usually when my cap dies. A few skills more though and I can sustain the MWD, then I can try again.

I noticed this, too.
I found that setting it to a tighter orbit for a bit, and then changing back out slightly tends to help. ------------------

This is why it is important to get the right combo between i-stabs, nanos or overdrives. many ppl just make their ship go as fast as possible not realising that to get the fast orbit is often more down to agility than top speed.
for example on my crow i could get a max speed of around 11kms but instead go for about 7.5kms which lets me orbit at around 20km confortably. of course i set it to orbit at around 17km to get the 20km orbit.
