I just watched the Space Shuttle Atlantis lift off.
Does anyone else get nervous, or is it just me?
I don't work for NASA, but have done work for them and the Shuttle program, and with the recent failures I find myself getting more nervous watching each launch.
This may only pertain to Americans, but maybe Russians get nervous with their launches too?
When I was a kid, it was just a cool thing to watch and dream about, but as an adult, there seems to be more emotional ties to the whole thing...

Not really, there have been way more successful shuttle launches than um, disasters.
Check out this clip of a nighttime launch. This clip got me started on my HD movie addiction.

Well, I have never seen a launch in person.
The Shuttle only flys for 2 more years, I'm going to make it a point to travel to Florida to see a luanch in person before the end of the program...

Ohh that's why there were so many people on the parking lot looking at the sky. Darn! I missed it again! |

I'm Canadian, have no link to the shuttle program at all, and I get goosebumps every time they lift off
They're GOING INTO SPACE, after all (even if it's 'only orbit'). My God, if I had the money to fly to the ISS, I'd happily fork over whatever they wanted....
Just imagine how that would feel.... you have now left the PLANET. Awesome.

True, but losing tax dollars is a bit different than seeing 7 people get blown up...
I have a fear that another shuttle crew is going to die, and that will be it for the entire program... Just have a feeling...
The US will already be without manned spaceflight from 2010 to 2015, as the replacement for the shuttle is a long ways off... We'll have a station and no way to travel to it...

Word... I worry too. It's good to minimize disasters for all sorts of reasons but we have to accept space is the frontier and is risky, hell, I wouldn't mind a high risk of dying if it advanced science/humankind... Space is risky and expensive, but the price of doing nothing is higher...
That being said, I really hope no more astronauts die of course.

It's MILK IN BAGS, after all (even if it's 'only plastic'). My god, if I had the money to put milk into bags, I'd happily fork over whatever they wanted.....

Everytime they launch a shuttle, I get nervous 'cause if it will explode in the air one of its fallin' pieces could hit me on the head.

Except the Russians. Their trusty rockets are still plenty capable of doing the runs.
The space shuttle has been a bit of a technological disaster, really. A reusable rocket that costs as much per launch as it costs to build a brand new Soyuz, and is now operating at nearly 30 years old. I wouldn't trust a 30 year old car to take me from one side of the country to the other, let alone a 30 year old rocket to take me in to high orbit...
In short- yes, it makes me pretty nervous, watching it, too.
Am waiting eagerly to see the shuttle's replacement. It looks to be all the charms of the retro space race days, with all the modern US technological advancements. Done right, it could be a real winner for the building blocks of future space travel. --------
