Forum folks:
I'm an empire carebear, wholly so. I read so much about BoB this, BoB that, I want to go down into their space...deep down into their space, and poke around. Kill some of their rats. Maybe try pew-pewing someone. Probably end up getting blown up.
I'm at a loss for where to begin.
1. If I take a ratting ship, I'd probably get caught up on gatecamp somewhere along the way and blown up. 2. If I fit a ship with WCS, I presume I wouldn't have docking rights anywhere down there to refit. 3. If I take my recon, I can get by safely, but since I fly an Arazu, I wouldn't really have the killing power to solo either rats or people. 4. If I put a cloak onto a battleship for the trip...and WCS...same problem as before - how do I refit for combat?
For you more experienced folks in these sort of things, please offer some tips? I'm more of an armor tanker than a shield tanker, so leaving the WCS on would hurt my tank. How should I go about this?

The obvious answer here is: noob ship (or t1 frig). Look to kill an unattentive shuttle or hauler.
There's an npc stn 1j out of nol btw. Can't get more bob than that. ----------------- "Oh, he's very popular Ed. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, ****s, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, ****heads - they all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude." |

Why would I talk to Dianabolic? I'm not trying to arrange for a gate-camp to be waiting for me.
And I've sent out select invitations to certain BoB members touted as awesome PvP pilots for a free entrance into the Eve Battleship Championship, which were declined - You'd think that they'd be happy for an easy opportunity to make a few billions by defeating a carebear...
I'm not looking to hook up into a BoB gank, thanks. =p

nol? I don't know what that is - I just figured I would pick a system deep in Fountain and go for it.

The easiest way is to establish yourself in the nearest NPC region. Get some blueprints and equipment you will need to start with, and make yourself a base of operations.
Then, when you can afford to lose ships go and kill BoB renters for sport.
Doing it as a one time venture is pointless though. It doesn't seem realistic to take one ship into any 0.0 space solo trying to achieve something.
As for ships, Thorax or Vexor are probably two of the best choices. Use Myrmidon and Dominix when you are already well established.

Tecan, this isn't about ISK - I have plenty of ships, more ISK than I can reasonably count, and if you clicky my signature, you'd notice that I'm offering billions and billions if someone can take me down in solo combat.
This is about having only been in 0.0 once, briefly, disastrously, and wanting to take another peek, deep into the heart of BoB space.

If it were me, this is what I would do.
- Jump into implantless clone.
- Make sure my clone is up to date

- Take a covert ops frigate and a library of BPOs (or BPCs) of everything I would need to do what I wanted. Should be easy enough to get all that to one of the NPC stations (covops frigates are almost impossible to catch... aren't they
). make sure the station has medical facilities.
- Ensconce yourself in said station, buy some minerals and start building (you are a self confessed carebear and industrialist after all).
- Move medical clone to the station.
- Wait a few hours for stuff to build, assemble and go explore/rat/pew pew/die horribly to gate camps/whatever.
Have fun.

With proper paranoia, a scout and good combat avoidance reflexes you can go ANYWHERE in Eve, in any alliance's space and fly around in almost any ship.
Having said that, if you don't use a scout, if you are not properly paranoid, if your combat avoidance reflexes are not sharp, your risk rises.
Actually engaging player targets will also add risk.
The above applies to any alliance's space. However, some alliances are better at evicting uninvited guests than others.
Raid groups go all over the game, including hostile groups into BoB space. Battlegroups seeking battle are a different matter.
Play nice while you butcher each other.

Well, when I say afford to lose ships I mean logistics wise. Market might not be very good so you will not be able to "afford" losing them until you have either a mineral collection + blueprints or just a large storage of spare ships and modules in one of the npc stations.
Gate camps are usually only around entry or main choke points. When you are already in, there should not be many issues with gate camps. Then you should just fly around and look for loners in belts, but always keep on the move. Get 2d maps of the region or study the 3d map for a while to learn all the possible alternative routes. Don't get yourself cornered in some dead end constellation.
Concerning the cloak. Unless you are flying a force recon don't fit one for PvP. It will lower your ship's scan resolution too much. On a PvE ship cloak is a very good thing to have though.
What to fly? I still think Thorax and Vexor are two best original choices. Not because they are cheap ISK wise, but because you can easily enough arrange them being built in large quantities, and being cruisers they are pretty fast and maneuverable. I myself fly minmatar, so I would choose Rupture or Stabber, but as far as I know even veteran pirates often fly T1 cruisers for their good cost vs hurt ratio and versatility.
If you can arrange carrier runs with t2 ships and modules, then of course logistics stops being a problem. Interceptors, assault frigs, hacs, and combat recons are all great for raiding.

Edited by: Imperius Blackheart on 12/06/2007 11:35:09 Edited by: Imperius Blackheart on 12/06/2007 11:33:51 Heres my advice, firstly you will need a scout (perhaps even 2) if your planning on taking a Battleship, if you take a BS and get caught in a bubble your screwed. And you need a scout who knows what he is doing, a experenced guy to take you around danger and know the signs. Flying either a cov-ops or a intercepter, something which can run pretty much any gate camp.
Fit a "nano" battleship, no not with nanos that just generally the name for a Battleship which it setup for speed and warping fast, you can actually get rigs as well which increase the speed you enter warp, as you can afford such luxurys you should take them. That should get your BS to where you want it, but it may take time.
Additionally your friends in cepters can add anti tackler support if nessesary, but you shouldn't be caught at all if your scouts are doing their job right, so no WCS needed.
Alternatively if you can fly one well take a intercepter yourself and hope to grab something tiny yourself for a kill.
I am sure some will disagree, but thats my advice, and I wish you well, you seem fun
Oh and finally to get to bob space you have to pass though some none pet space, if you can get them to make you blue for the duration it always helps.

I once ventured DEEP DEEP in to bob space (unknowingly) to buy cheap T2 strip mining lasers,....after safely jumping somthing like 35 jumps in to deep 0.0 .....funny thing was i hardly saw a soul while traviling in that area of space.....
Anyway i finally reached the station where i was gonna buy the lasers.....there was a ship sitting outside it......i was in a small frig....next thing i know the ship try's to lock me.....so i tried to dock...only to find the station would,nt let me dock.....so i asume it was an outpost and not a station at all....lol.
So i quicky about turned and legged it 35 jumps back in to safe space as fast as i could.....i made it safely back out and thought to myself....while im hear on the edge of bob space i may as well check the asteroid belts to see what ore they have at the edge of there space.....this was a 0.5 area....lol
I jumped from belt to belt checking for the ore to find nothing of real interest....and thought ok...time to go home.....but for some strange reason i missplotted my corse....lol...and headed back threw the gate in to bob space to a bob welcome of 5 of 6 ships, a warp bubble and god only knows what else....lol...so after jumping 35 jumps in and 35 jumps safly back out...i end up getting creamed by bob for a simple mistake....lol
I have to admit it was with an alt with no real harm done besides to my ego.....lol...things like this can only ever happen to me.....but i had to look on the bright side.....they saved me the journey home....and i woke up all snug and safe in my stations clone bay.....lol....so that i can at least thank them for.
so a leason for those willing to go in to bob space......do it with an alt and with a small fast ship....and never make the mistake of venturing back in once you make it out....lol
Regards
Renosha

I'm at a loss for where to begin.
Start by insuring your ship and mentally preparing yourself to eventually lose it. 0.0 space is all about risk/reward. Keep enough isk on hand to replace your losses, fly smart enough to make 1-2 ships' worth before dying again.
Quote:
1. If I take a ratting ship, I'd probably get caught up on gatecamp somewhere along the way and blown up.
Traveling from empire to 0.0 there are typically only 2 dangerous spots. The initial hisec -> lowsec transition is sometimes camped, and the lowsec -> 0.0 transition is sometimes camped. For these transitory areas you will either want to rely on the world map statistics data (podkills in the last hour), or have a scout jump through before you send your ratting ship through.
Aside from these two transitions, the vast majority of 0.0 is completely empty.
Quote:
2. If I fit a ship with WCS, I presume I wouldn't have docking rights anywhere down there to refit.
Delve is partial NPC sovereign 0.0 space. You may dock in any station with "Blood Raiders" in the name without having bartered standings. Quote: 3. If I take my recon, I can get by safely, but since I fly an Arazu, I wouldn't really have the killing power to solo either rats or people.
The Arazu is actually one of the more powerful recons against other players. If you learn how to fly it you could easily orchestrate attacks on belt ratters and miners- though very few in BoB engage in such activities.
Quote: 4. If I put a cloak onto a battleship for the trip...and WCS...same problem as before - how do I refit for combat?
Delve and Fountain both have NPC stations. Bring ammo BPOs and the modules you want to refit and Presto! you're making a living in BoB space!
Quote: For you more experienced folks in these sort of things, please offer some tips? I'm more of an armor tanker than a shield tanker, so leaving the WCS on would hurt my tank. How should I go about this?
Only fit the WCS for travel- if a BoB gang gets a tackle on ou they will most likely have multiple points.
Watch the local window for any activity at all. When you see someone enter local, immediately safespot to prevent losing your ship.
BoB are most active within 4 hours either direction of DT. To maximise your chance for survival, travel outside of those hours.
If you decide to PvP, picking on BoB pets is easier than picking on BoB. Go to Feyth, Period Basis, or Fountain for easy kills.
Invariably some arrogant BoB croney is going to post some "come on down moar targets" baloney. BoB are not infallible- much the opposite- the availability of free HACs and other ships has oddly made them careless in solo engagements. Their fleet work is top notch though, so don't pick a 50v1.
Good luck, have fun, update your clone regularly :]

From the tone of your post you want to go softly-softly catchee monkey approach.
You are gonna need a covop cloak recon, a handful of cloak Damage dealers (recommend ravens), cloak 'dictor optional but recommended.
Fit the recon out for speed and tackling - forget trying to get it to do damage - you use the BS for that, you'll be wanting covops cloaks and probe launchers in the highs, and, if you have any capital backup available, a cyno gen.
Park up the cloak BS somewhere, send the recons out fishing, spot target, move BS into pounce position, make them a warp in, decloak, tackle what you can and call it to your buddies.
There are other, more overt ways - HAC squads are always fun.
If you're absolutely firm in the idea of doing this thing solo though, miners and npc'ers will be your targets and you are going to have to bear in mind that you have to be your own tackler, which means high-damage ships are not an option, coz you gots ta be quick.
I think probably the best all round solo ship going is the curse - it does around 250dps out the drone bay (afaik, at least) you can damp targets with the mids, use nos bonus to suck 'em dry, and just let the drones chew thru them in their own sweet time once their cap is gone - but be warned curse are made out of paper, so you do need to be a good pilot to keep them in one piece - this is not a ship flown by n00bs (not for long, anyway!)
Gd luck

Don't worry about fitting stabs. You will just die horribly in gatecamp with a dictor.
Fitting cloak will not save you at a gatecamp either though you can use it to park in a system till the gatecamp is gone.
If you are so affluent then you can fit your BS for speed. I have seen a guy in Fountain who could bypass gatecamps with ease with a faction/officer fitted BS by simply either reapproaching the gate or aligning out of the bubble and warping away before anyone had time to reach him.
Though I'm shooting myself in the foot here, since I'm living in Fountain as well.
Also, Fountain is hardly the deepest part of BOB space. It is the ghetto

Give delve and fountain a go. Until you get a good grasp of what you're doing, the NPC stations will be really handy. WCS aren't really necessary (nor useful) since the biggest threat to you is a bubble camp, not a tackler ship. If yo can fly a HAC, it's the ideal ninja ratter- BS's can be a bit on the slow side.
Mostly though, take a ship you can afford to lose, and just have FUN. Anyone who fancies sallying out of Empire in to the deep unknown of alliance space deserves all the kudos going- good luck with it! --------
