I've had a look at the ship config guide but there doesn't seem to be a ship config for speed salvaging. Is there one ?
At the moment I take a Caracal into lvl II missions and destroy everything and go back to station and jump in a Kestrel for salvaging.
The kestrel has 3 salvager 1's and 1 missile launcher can't remember what I have shield wise but also have a 1mn afterburner. Soon i'll be getting a tractor beam on it as well.

I actually use a Maller for salvage, but that's cause I like to run dual accts and have one fight while the other salvages. I like to know that my alt can take a few hits without dying so I don't have to pay as much attention.
And OMG a tractor is a must. Train that first if you want to do any salvaging.

ok so destroyer it is then, which is wierd as it only has a base speed of 210 where as the Kestrel has base speed of 260.
I guessing you don't need speed as the tractor beams pull them to you rather than chase in a Kestrel ?

The most kick ass choice if you ahve the extra isk, at least for Caldari, is the Drake with: 8 hi slots 3 tractors 4 salvagers 1 cloak (you never know when you might need this) 6 mid slots 1 best AB you can get Anything that boosts cap regen 4 lows 4 t2 cargo expanders

Yup. Picture this scenario - there are 2 wrecks, both 20km from you in opposite directions.
If you had to fly to them it'd be 20km to the first one, then 40km (20km to start then an additional 20km to the wreck) for a total of 60km. With a MWD travelling at 1km/s, that'd take about 60 seconds to loot 2 cans. With tractor beams, you'd sit in the middle and tractor both cans towards you at 500m/s, so you'd travel no distance and both cans would reach you in about 40 seconds. Now imagine you're flying to a third can while you're tractoring the other 2 cans and you can see how a destroyer is better than a kestrel.

Low end = Destroyer (cormorant is best, catalyst hurts for cap)
Mid range = Hurricane (best mix of speed/ agility/ cargo/ lows/ highs)
uber pimped salvager = Navy Apoc (8 highs, 8 lows :) )

Indeed, i use a thrasher for salvaging and it works like a charm then again, i just fitted it cuz at that moment it was available hehe, i would have prolly chosen a cormorant. CCP, let us pay the online shop with Direct Debit!!!

Catalyst is actually better then Thrasher for salvaging as it has better Cap regen and can hold more. For mission salvaging I use the following -
4x Tractor, 4x Salv 1 MWD or AB (swap as needed), Cap Recharger II 4x Exp Cargo II
Gives you 800 cargo and a fast, manuverable ship. It never runs out of cap (unless I run all the salvg/tractors + MWD). Using a BC for salvaging is idiotic as they have a small base cargo hold, are slow and take forever to turn. --------------- This sig has been censored in fear of recieving the ban hammer... |

For just salvaging I think a interdictor is hard to beat. You get a full set of high slots AND speed.(And you get a load of really nice skills with it too) 
Race doesnt really matter, though extra low slots are better than extra mids.
High 2x TB 6x Salvagers
Mid MWD + luxury stuff
Low Nanos/expanders/luxury
Dont fly into deadspace to salavage, just bookmark 1 wreck in each pocket, and go back after the mission is complete. Approach 1 wreck, while using TB on 2 others, put 2 salvagers on each.
As a bonus your corp will appreciate having more people who can fly dictors.

I like the stabber, personally. 4 salvagers and 2 tractors. It's quite zippy and good camouflage when you're flying around near wrecks.

If you use a nighthawk on a 2nd account while your main goes through the missions, then you can also throw on a gang assist module or two to help your main tank.

salvage/support mrymidon hi slot : 4 x salvagers 2 x tractors
mid slot : 1 x 10mn ab large shield booster rest - cap rechargers
low slot : 5 x expanders (named will give you over 1000m3 easy) rest - nano's
drones : 5 x large shield or armour bots

My salvager / loot collector (single account running) is a catalyst:
H: 4x Salvagers 4x Tractors
M: 1x AB 1x Cap Recharger
L: 3x Cargo expanders
Can't go much wrong with that. doesn't hold up under fire well though- consider using some of the lows for tank if you want to use it while active missioning.

I use a Coercer, the Amarr Destroyer. Loads of cap and enough PG/CPU to fit 4 tractors, 4 salvage tackle and still have enough left over for a 10mn AB which pushes the ship up to a nice 565 m/s. Just a nice speed for salvaging those ships that decide to remain far away from the rest of the pack you've destroyed in a mission. With T2 expanders in lows, it holds a comfortable 720 m3.

The mission has gone, but the wrecks are still there. This also removes the problem of no MWD in deadspace, as the deadspace has gone too.
Ship? In your case, destroyer fitted with 2xTractor, 6xSalvager, 1xMWD, 2xCargo mods.
6 salvagers will fairly whip through a wreck, normally succeeding on the first cycle.

Don't forget that Cargo Expanders slow you down. His 565 was probably with the drag of the expanders. --------

4 tractor beams, 4 salvagers 1 MWD, 2 Cap Recharger Overdrive injector
salvage your first wreck, jet your entire cargo and tow that can with a tractor beam, name the can someing unique so its easily identified. All salvage and loot gets dumped in that jetcan as you collect it. When finished, bookmark jetcan return with hauler, scoop, profit.
With warp to zero this process is very fast. Salvaging in a battleship or battlecruiser is just silly.

I know its a typo, but the irony made me giggle.
I usually sell as I go. A full run up that loads my Badger to the hilt usually doubles my per hourly intake. Nothing like that level of volume, but the market doesn't go apopleptic.
Usually I just mount a salvager on my ratting ship and salvage as I go.
