Hello everybody, I had yesterday a very "interesting" experience that I would need some feedback from the thinking minds here.
Recently I had asked around wether my anti belt rat defense drones (Hobgoblins) would be any liability towards potential jet-can ore thieves. I was told that as long as I would not give orders to engage that said drones would not automatically answer to the agro of a can thieve. Anyways..I was yesterday mining away at a belt witha corpmate when this Mamoth came along and did some self service bufette with our can. Some ore taken is not worth getting into a Barge-whoknowswhat shooting contest and while we convo¦d the guy to let him know we were no macros but honest to God, look-into-the-screen minners the man let us know he made not such petty distinctions and stole, left, came back and stole some more. Two times he took from us with our drones whirling around the whole scene with no further drama. But then came round three and my corp mate decided it was better to cart away what few rocks we had left in our can. He jumped to station and came back with the mule just when the mamoth pilot was approaching for the next run. Then things went very fast and I can not quite follow the events that unfolded. I kep at my passive self and toke some of the remaining ore back to my barge cargo hold. Keep in mind this was still our can. At the same time the mule arrived but to late to take anything as I saw the can getting cleaned in front of me and the exploding due to its emptiness. Then all of the sudden while I was trying to convo a third corp mate on local who was afk I start hearing shots getting fired. When I clear the screen to watch I was all happy now Concord would show up and hand out some retribution. This was not to be..My drones where flying around the mamoth shooting at him while he had me already in his iron grip which would not allow me to warp away and was pounding me with some autocannon. The end was sad for me and surely funny for him as my retriever exploded after a prolongued drama and I could barely save my pod to the station.
What went wrong? For two times my drones did not touch him while he was stealing and the suddenly they become active and return the agro? I surely did not target him at any point nor give agressive orders out.
Any takers?

Drones will not aggress unless you are attacked, they will not attack due to someone taking from your can, the ore thief must have quickly switched the can and maybe renamed his can to what you had your original can named as to trick you into taking it, or you must have made a mistake and took from one of his cans.
Basically ore thief tricked you into taking from his can (somehow) He then attacked you Only then did your drones attack him

What could have also happened is that the ore thief created his own jet can, then selected all your ore and dragged it to his own, but didn't let go the button. As soon as he saw the ore going away, he releases the button and then the game thinks you are robbing from his can due to lag. Then boom.

Thats the really weird part because I could have impossibly have taken from him. I had the original can always open on my screen for the 3 minute ore transfer motion. I also understand that you get an on screen warning if you do try to take from a can you should not. But again, this is moot since I had the original can always open on my screen. Could my hauling corp mate have had something to do with this? maybe he was the one who caught from a fake can? Maybe he did some wrong targeting with his tractor beam? Could he have caused the agro that the Mamoth then took advantage?
Could that lag thing have really caused it? Him having dragged the loot to his can but having let go of it? That would be very weird. ------------------------------------------------ "Stop quoting laws, we carry weapons!"

Here is the trick.
If an ore thief shows up. Count all the ore currently in cans as gone. Either continue mining there in your holds and fly to station and back, or leave the system entirely.
The PURPOSE of an ore thief is not to steal your ore, but to get you to agress them.
Either they get you to take from a can they make you think is yours, or they wait for you to shoot them.
The best safety to this is either bring more force than they can (Friends in combat ships in the same PLAYER corp), or leave, or stop jetcanning.

I had heard that there is some trick (aka exploit) that allow to get the miner as the aggressor. Cade description seem very plausible and a bit disturbing.
Try a petition with all you have reported and Cade suggestion. Cite exactly the other party name as the only chance of it begin veryfied as an exploit seem if the GM check the other player log too and not only yours.

There are code locked cans. I figure they don't work against this kind of stealing. Why?

They work, it is only that they are small. As soon as you start to do some heavy mining with good skills or a mining cruiser you will fill them in no time.
Add to that the fact that the best spot in the belts have cans ancored there years ago, probably by people that is no more playing or isn't in the same region and you can't anchor a container within 5K meter from a static objet can, roid and so on and you will see why most people don't use them.

Thanks to the replies...I guess we will never really know what went on there, if it was the lag possibility, my corpmate in his mule or a unknown third explanation.
No wonder people mine in Empire in Hulks, at least those, with two nice tech II cargo expanders can about forget dangerous jet can mining and protect in the same line more effectively the very expensive strip miner IIs. ------------------------------------------------ "Stop quoting laws, we carry weapons!"

I say petition it and you might get reimbursed, and if he used the exploit mentioned he might end up punished in some way and possibly even banned.
After all, you still had your can opened all the time so you SHOULD not be flagged to him. _ Win BIG ISK with BIG Lottery

I've started to leave multiple jetcans in systems, even though I don't usually jet-can mine.
It smokes out the ore thieves, and ****es them off at the same time as they are wasting a lot of time checking cans with one unit of ore inside. (Yes, some are looking for just aggro, but many will come get the ore)
They may eventually stop looking at my cans at all, allowing me to unfettered jet-can mining if I so desire.
