Hi there,
I recently saw a comercial of Vongo. For 10 bucks a month you can download and watch movies from their 'virtual library'. I downloaded the trial and it was quite nice, easy to use, fast downloads, great picture quality, very nice. But the movies selection is kind of lacking and many movies are marked as PPV. If you wan't to watch those PPV it's extra money.
I wonder if you know about other services like this. Something with a little bit more available titles. It's an uber idea and I'm sure Vongo can't be the only one. |

On a serious note, it does sound pretty cool. I prefer to own a movie on DVD though.

and since most ISPs cap your bandwidth in some way, it's a royal pain in the arse to d/l movies on t'internet.

I have downloaded like 10 movies already, on the trial. Once you select the first one, it starts downloading. Then I select like 2 or 3 more. It takes me like 20 minutes. By that time the first movie is about 40% downloaded and I can start watching it. By the time I'm done with the first one, the 2nd is ready and it's downloading the third. I guess is their codec because my bandwith is crappy compared to most ISPs.
I don't mind not owning the DVDs. I have kids. DVDs rarely last more than a year. I quite frankly, I rarely watch something twice. If I ever want to see it again, I can download it again. That is not a problem.
The only problem is that Vongo's selection is too limited IMO. |

That's some serious trolling, faking a quote... that's a new low, even for you.
And I'm not selling anything. Actually, if you read, I'm saying that Vongo is not good enough and I'm looking for something better. |

I have a bandwidth cap on my ISP, and I dont know what the limit is. I spent a month solid downloading at least 2 torrents at a time, all the time, and I didnt hit it.... ---

i had a 20gig cap at home and last year i'd apparently managed to nail it three months running.
look at it like this - a 1 gig file takes about a day to d/l on a relatively slow torrent. if i download 1 a day and i'm going to hit that cap pretty soon.

When you say bandwidth cap, you refer to how fast you can download or how much you can download. Because I have never seen a residential service with a "40Gb per month" kind of limit, not ever. Web sites, yeah... comercial lines, maybe... but a limit per month on residencial lines?
I download stuff like there's no tomorow. My phone is VOIP. My wife emails pictures of the kids en-masse to her family. If such a limit exists, I would have hit it long ago. |

There are very few ISPs that have a solid cap on downloads. Zen's home accounts have a fixed cap and you must pay for extra bandwidth if you exceed it, but most ISPs (in the UK at least) operate a Fair Access Policy.
As for videos, it's a realm that's really starting to take off. Sites like Babelgum are starting to take off in a big way, mainly thanks to the youtube phenomenon.

I've seen funnier fake quotes littered about these forums actually. And there's a difference between trolling and making a joke. Trolling usually involves completely flaming the OP or repliers to the OP without saying anything constructive. I was merely having a jest, although I admit my humour can be a bit cynical and warped at times.

Here in Britain GB caps are still very much the norm. There are numerous ISPs who don't offer an unlimited GB usage service. I'm stuck using one just now, after moving from AOL where my service was unlimited. If it wasn't for AOL's evil software I would have been happy to stay with them. Most months I don't go over my limit but I am thinking of changing to another service now.
It's those who use torrent software that are causing the problem. My brother in law is constantly (and by this I mean he "is always in the process of") downloading movies or software using Bit Torrent or some similiar software. There is some small justice though in that the moron needs to format regularly because of the viruses and spyware he downloads along with his movies (which are crap quality anyway).

Indeed... Personally i'd never go for an ISP that limits your bandwidth. Virgin/Blueyonder ftw.

I'm with BT for broadband. I think they normally cap their customer's downloads but i'm on a super-mega ultra special business account and they get down on the floor and lick my boots if I tell them to. So I made them take away my limit.
