Yesterday I discovered the joys of lowsec gatecamping for the very first time.
Up until yesterday my lowsec pvp has consisted exclusivly of solo flying about hunting targets in belts, either with my vexor or a taranis. I let someone twist my arm a bit and setup a mega to tank sentries. Off we went to the gate.
We started with two megas and a nighthawk but the gang grew and shrank as the evening progressed. From the first moment of arriving on the gate targets were plentiful. Ship after ship after ship jumped into our camp. Haulers, Ravens, Megathrons, Drakes and just about everything inbetween all jumped to their deaths, no scouts no nothing. After the first 30 minutes anybody with half a brain could have told you that there was a heavy camp in that system, but still they came and came.
I am not sure how much loot was collected but tonight we will add it all up and be astonished. I took no pods but managed to lose 8 points of security in the fracas.
Anyway this is not an announcement of me going into lowsec piracy in a big way, instead its a post to let any carebears reading this know why it is that pirates do what they do. Its simple: the money is too good to not do it!
Occasionally a juicy target would present itself and not jump in....these guys must have had scouts in system with us and therefore they avoided the camp.
As a funny side note, our scout in the system next door let us know that people were spamming local with warning about our camp, The warnings started out with reporting about 6 megathrons and eventually, according to them, we had multiple carriers and a whole fleet on the gate. I LOL'd.
When I finally went to bed we had killed more than 75 ships in about 5 hours. And people wonder what those pirates are doing there.

Actually.. that sounds boring to be honest. Where lies the effort? I understand the money is good and sometimes people need money. But to do that night after night after night just for the killmails rather than go on a proper hunt is kind of lame.

I personally find it boring and don't really do it. But-how exactly is it different than camping 0.0 with a dictor/fixed bubbles? At least in losec you can actually attempt a warp/or use stabs etc (stabs are for non-combat ships ya gimps ).
And to camp under the guns and kill targets obviously requires some skill in tanking etc to avoid going pop under the sentry guns.
And as Ned mentioned....it was just a couple hours...not 23/7 in this case. Not to mention that some nasty bastards might come along and blow that camp-or try...F4T4L pilots being pretty tough hombres .

To protect their sovereignity? At least that is a valid argument for camping in my book (about the only one as well, except as I previously stated to do it like once every now and again when wallet is in crisis).

Oh, sorry. I did not mean the amount of skillbooks bought and trained in order to mount nice and shiny T2 modules, I meant the actual IRL skills at understanding the game and its mechanics and go do some real hunting. Tbh a gatecamp is almost like spawncamping in CS with an AWM and a dude that ghosts for you (sorry about the comparison, but hey, its true)

As I said in my original post, "I understand that the money is good and you sometimes need it but to do it night after night..bladiblahbla and so on and so forth". No criticism towards OP intended, just my thoughts vented. _ Win BIG ISK with BIG Lottery

Hello...Konora? N-RAEL? Other key gateways to 0.0? Since when does NPC 0.0 have sov of any sort? No different to the folks camping Amamake...except they make no claims to sov .
And I do agree with your comment regarding skill to an extent. But hey...whatever floats players boats.

Aye gatecamping can net u some good isk that's for sure. unfortunately it gets real boring real fast and rather resembles shooting fish in a barrel and u are almost falling asleep while killing haulers. However, every now and again it's fun to just see lots of explosions and make decent isk.

Yeah, but sometimes players do have half a brain and tell everyone there's a camp.
Then you have tio let it respawn. Say what? |
