Are they necessary? POSes in .5 and above. Do they need defenses? I thought I remembered reading in the past that even during war dec the pos is concord protected in .5 and up systems. Just wondering. --------------------------------------------------

Currently you are safer without guns on your empire POS as even under war dec agressing corporations needs to have POS guns to shoot at them before they can shoot at POS without concord intervention. No guns, no shooting at war targets means concord will defend your POS.
This will be 'fixsed' propably pretty soon. I would not be surprised if even in revelations 2. After that you would need those guns if someone wardecks you.

Not exactly true. The latest dev blog shows us:
# Security status is no longer affected for killing starbase structures belonging to a war target. # Attacking the starbase of a war target in high security space would occasionally result in a global criminal flag. This no longer occurs.
Can be found here
So yes, defences definetly should be considered. But only during wartime. Having said that, I will be anchoring defences on all my towers in advance, but only onlining them in the case of war.

Well, thats Revelations 2 coming sooner than I expected
If you already do not have guns on your empire POS, then it's reasonable to wait until revelations 2 is patched. As I understand from patch notes they are going to change some gun stats and guns anchoring/unanchoring will be also faster. With all those remarks about guns how they will be 'in line with turret equivalents' it might happen that whats reasonable today might not be that good anymore after next tuesday.

So High Sec POSes are wardeccable now?
If that's so, I feel sory for the poeple without POS. They will be hit on this one. At the first sign of POS griefage I will take mine down and spam all empire research slots with my research jobs. I shall use all my characters and my whole corp shall use all their characters and alts too. I have made the math, If you have enough people doing research, on the long run is even faster than at pos... even with 60 days wait queue on the slots. |

It still is rather unfeasible short of battleships shooting unarmed smalls. Even a large (50+) BS gang would have a *really* fun time shooting an unhardened medium for countless hours on end. Factor hardeners into the equation (since they'll be inside the force field), and it's comic.

I want some of the stuff you are smoking please. POS is faster no matter, with a 25% bonus and no waiting times... Fine..POS'es get to be attackable in wars, thats only fair. Put up defense, and dont attract attention from griefers, and you should be ok. Small tower owners might have a harder time though, since the amount of defense you can fit is fairly limited, but still..
I've done as Ricdic, anchored a LOT of weapons/EW at my POS, if war should occur, I'd offline some labs and online the defenses.

Depends on the amount of alts doing the research. Doing 30 jobs per account (3 chars) is relatively easy. Approx 3 weeks of training all together. Large caldary tower gives max 45 ME/PE and 15 Copy slots, costs approx 220 mil/month and is 25 % faster. Possibly also without que. Now throw in timecodes. Get one account, get them all to 10 labs, que up research for 1 month on each character and let the account to expire. Activate when research is ready.
At some point there will be 'balance' where it's cheaper AND faster than running group of large POS'es AND your alts to fill those slots. Just depends on magnitude of your operations. Not so good if your operations are small.
I myself upgraded to large tower few days ago in preparation of rev 2 patch. As I don't fly around smacking people I don't expect to **** anybody so nuts that it would make it worth attacking large tower in high sec. You can turn it into huge painful speed bump overnight in case of wardec. Just load it up with hardeners, throw in 5 medium artilleries to direct their fire and babysit your POS 23/7 if wardecced. Don't forget 3 d 6 h of strontsium near by to load up your tower before it hits reinforced.
Ofcource as I understand patch notes there shall be some tweaks to gun and missile batteries so what is good idea for empire POS defence will be abit clearer after the patch hits. Who knows - perhaps ECM batteries will be new flavor of the month in POS defence.
