Hi!
I just bought a laptop and I also have a stationary comp. I would like to move like 30gb of songs and 10gb of other stuff to my laptop, and I can't use a external HDD yet (gotto wait a few days to get a hold of one). Since I am to inpatient to wait i thought i'd ask if there is any other way?
The first thing I thought was FTP, but then i remember i have no idea how to host a ftp with my stationary since I have no clue what my IP and stuff is (I have a router) unless someone can help moi with it, is there any other way?

you have both computers with you? just put them in the same router and you should be able to share the folder(s) and move it over the network?

Thing is, i need to move like 35gb or sommat worth of mp3 from a win xp machine to a mac os x machine :/

Just move it folder by folder by a memory stick or iPod or somesuch. Or wait.

Got a DVD-RW? You can always just move it in the 5GB chunks, if thats the easiest option.

I tried doing this once, using my iPod, but when I tried to 'get' files off it, there was no such option (i.e. in iTunes) other than using an explorer tool and manually opening each folder on the iPod and copying any mp3/wma files.
Problem is, each folder and song is 'encrypted' in what I assume is iPod language. Thus, filenames and data structures (folders) have nothing to do with artist or song titles, and are essentially gibberish.
There may be a third-party prog out there that accomplishes the task; if anyone knows of one, recommendations please?

I'm not sure how you'll get the 10gb of "other stuff" transfered, but the music I can help you with...
if all the music you want transferred is already on the ipod and accounted for in itunes on your XP system its easy... go into your itunes music folder on the XP machine, copy the library files (I think there's 2 of them). Move them to the OSX machine and put them in whatever folder you want your new itunes library to be. Load itunes and plug in the ipod, and it will copy all the music from your ipod to the hard drive.
This process is supported by apple, and better instructions are available on their support page. In fact, you should probably check there to make sure I didn't forget a step... its been a while since I did this. |

iPods have a data folder in addition to the audio storage... just access it as an ordinary external hard drive.
